A little wrinkling to the paper along the top edge. A few minor creases throughout and some areas of light surface dirt.
§ Fritz Klimsch (German, 1870-1960) a bronze figure of a seated nude, signed in the bronze 27 x 40cm (11 x 16in) In good condition, almost certainly a later casting with no foundry marks. There are a few light scratches and some wear to patina, particularly to her raised knee and nose. There is also a little pitting to her back and shoulders.
MICHAEL BROIDO Morning Light Oil on canvas Very likely 1960s but undated so could be later. 51 x 61cm The Michael Broido Collection Michael Broido 1927 (London) - 2013 (Lewes, East Sussex) London-born Michael Broido moved with his parents to Johannesburg, South Africa when he was a baby. At the age of 20 relocated to the UK to study art and work in London. Michael lived in Cornwall (St Ives and Newlyn) from 1956 until the 1980s, when he moved to London and then Lewes in East Sussex. He was part time gardener to Patrick Heron at Eagles Nest, Zennor near St Ives 1956-58, where he also had a studio; studio assistant to sculptor Barbara Hepworth 1959-62, and taught at Truro School of Art 1960-80. He shared a studio, 6 Piazza Studios, with the artist Alan Lowndes, while living in St Ives. Michael was a member of, and exhibited regularly at, the Penwith Society and the Fore Street Gallery; also at Signals Gallery, London; and in the Falmouth Art Group Twenty Cornish Artists Exhibition 1958; and City Art Gallery, Plymouth Painters in Cornwall 1960. His work is represented in the Pier Gallery Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney and the Cornwall Council Schools Art Collection, now based at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. His painting 'White on Black', 1963 from the Schools Collection was exhibited earlier this year at Penlee Museum and Art Gallery in the 'The Bigger Picture: Painting in Cornwall from 1920 - 1965' exhibition. Texas and German Immigration Company 1854. 4 shares of $100 each. Light blue-gray paper. Small repaired edge split, and small red crayon notation, upper right, Furst Solmssches Archiv Braunfels stamp near the bottom, otherwise Extremely Fine.The Texas and German Emigration Company, also known as the German Emigration Company or the Adelsverein, acquired more than 4,400 acres of land in Fayette County and began advertised the chance to settle in Texas to Germans. It worked. Over 5,000 Germans came to Texas between October 1845 and April 1846; many to New Braunfels in Comal and Guadalupe County, and Fredericksburg in Gillespie County. The company became financially embarrassed in 1853, and tried to raise additional capital with a stock offering. Another important piece of Texas financial history.From the John E. Herzog Collection.

CSA Bonds. Ball 156. January 1, 1863. 100 Pounds - 2,500 Francs. No.2037. Erlanger bond. Grayish-brown tint. Allegorical woman representing the Confederacy holds flag. Signed by Emile Erlanger as "CONTRACTOR" and John Slidell as "COMMISSIONER." 36 coupons. EF, with a light vertical band of age toning inside the right border. John Slidell accepted a diplomatic appointment to represent the Confederacy. He was aboard the Trent, a British mail steamer, when it was captured by the U.S. Navy. The capture seemed like a good idea at the time, but it almost resulted in bringing the British into the War Between the States on the Confederate side. Slidell was released and sent on his way, and the situation was temporarily diffused.

Charles II. Stuart King of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1660-1685). LS, 4vo. July 27, 1666. Signed "Charles R" at the top. Sir Thomas Slingesby, Knight, signs one of the back panels. "Our will and Pleasure is that out of such monies as are or shall come to your hands for the Pay of Our Forces and Garrisons in England you Pay on to Our trusty and welbeloved Sr. Thomas Slingesby, Knt. (or whom he shall appoint) the sum of One hundred and Eighty Eight Pounds one shilling & foure[sic] Pence. The same being due to Our Guarrison[sic] of Scarborough for two months Pay on the muster of the 18th of November 1671…Given at Our Court at Whitehall…" This document was signed during the Second Dutch War. By 1666 France and Denmark were allies of the Dutch, and an attack on the Thames was to become a reality a year later. Some light age toning is present. Crabbe, George (1754-1832). English poet and naturalist who was greatly admired by Byron. ALS, 8vo, 2 pages. Crabbe's "The Borough" was the inspiration for Benjamin Britten's opera - Peter Grimes. The entire letter concerns Crabbe's financial difficulties as a clergyman.A hole in the blank leaf barely effects the front page. Some light age toning along the right side. Thomas, Dylan (1914-1953). Welsh poet and writer. Well-known for "Do Not Go Gentle Into the Night" and "Death Shall Have No Dominion". He acquired a well-deserved reputation as a "roistering, drunken and doomed poet," dying prematurely after a night of heavy drinking. ALS 8vo. Boat House, Laughharne, Carmarhenshire. July, 15, 1953 (just four months before his death). A few light stains, and some mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise, very fine. "Dear Leslie Collier, Apologies. I was in America when you came to Carmarthen, that couldn't be helped. But I've been back a month now, and I haven't written to say how sorry I was to have missed you and how I hope, whenever you're next in this part, you'll come along and have drinks. No letters were forwarded when I was away, so unfortunately, I couldn't let you know; but I could have written much sooner than this. My only excuse is that I have been busy about the country ever since I returned; and that's a poor excuse, I know. My wife also wants to apologise for not having seen you when you were down. White Cloud City Company (Kansas Territory) July 1st, 1857. One share. No.68. George Washington flanked by two females. Liberty, left. Indian chief, right. Signed by Louise C. Denver, wife of James William Denver, Secretary and Governor of Kansas Territory, and the man who Denver, Colorado was named after. Very Fine, with a few trivial rust spots, and a small body hole. Light pencil notations in the top margin. Issued near the beginning of the "Bleeding Kansas" era. The 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act placed the power to allow or forbid slavery in Kansas Territory in the hands of the settlers. Pro-slavery "Border Ruffian" elements in Kansas clashed with "Anti Free-Staters" as new cities such as White Cloud were organized. White Cloud began as a flourishing community along the Missouri River at a time when steamboats were still a major source of freight and passenger traffic. This is the only such Kansas Territorial certificate known to this cataloger. Off the market since 2002. From the John E. Herzog Collection.

On the 9th day of August, 1345, Edward the Third's cousin Henry, Earl of Lancaster disembarked at Bordeaux. Until then the English and their allies had fared poorly in the War in Gascony. Henry, now the king's Captain-General and Lieutenant in Aquitaine and Languedoc, though, would launch a military campaign that would bring rapid success. On the 24th of August, he took the strategic city of Bergerac. It marked the turning point in the war. "In gratitude for his victorious deeds in Aquitaine," Edward III conveyed to Henry the castle, town and castellany of Bergerac along with the privilege of striking coin there and enjoying the profit thereof.
