1961 Bentley S2 Transmission: automaticMileage:The Bentley S2 Saloon and Continental models all received a shot in the arm in 1959 when introduced at London Motor Show, the Rolls-Royce/Bentley straight-six engine was replaced by an all-new aluminium V8 unit. The more muscular engine, producing approximately 200bhp, was designed primarily to deliver more torque, but it also allowed the company to deliver a product more in tune with its rivals in export markets. Of course, there were many rumours as to what the origins of the V8 engine were but Rolls-Royce always maintained it was an entirely in-house effort. As before, the Bentley S2 was a badge-engineered Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and was built to the same standards and luxury. The 6230cc unit installed in the S2 was smoothly powerful and transformed the Bentley into a grand tourer capable of running silently at speed all day long. Power steering was improved in the S2 but the General Motors automatic gearbox was the same as its predecessor and in fact Rolls-Royce continued to use the gearbox until the introduction of the Silver Shadow. This example is presented in silver/grey with a light grey leather interior. Its interior is showing nice patina and this Bentley was in a single long-term ownership prior to the present owner. From the early 1990s to 2023 the car was stored as part of a private collection until it was sold to its present owner earlier this year and due to ill health, the car is now being offered without reserve. It comes with a current V5C registration document and although the car does run and drive, we advise that due to some work needing to be carried out on the brakes, we do not recommend the car be driven away from the auction and in addition to this some light recommissioning will be necessary.

1995 Volkswagen Golf VR6 Transmission: manualMileage:78000Produced from 1991 to 1997, the Volkswagen Golf VR6 arguably kicked off Europe's obsession with the mega hatch as it epitomised the ideal balance of performance with everyday usability. Replacing the 1990 Volkswagen Golf GTi G60, this front-wheel drive, five-seat, compact hatchback is part of the Mk. III generation Golf, which came in three or five door variations. It also came with the option of a five-speed manual gearbox, or a four-speed automatic. As far as fuel economy is concerned, this car should achieve around 30mpg, meaning a full tank should cover 350 miles before requiring a refill. These cars are pretty rare, as today there are only around 850 Mk. III VR6s on UK roads. First registered on 19th May 1995 and costing £19,920, this metallic blue VR6 is a three-door manual example. Described as totally original and even featuring the uprated, from factory, Sony HiFi upgrades, this example boasts just three former keepers, the last a lady who has owned the car since the turn of the millennium. The car has recently undergone a light restoration and is offered with an MoT test certificate until June 2024. The history file contains a full book pack and a comprehensive service history with significant paperwork for previous maintenance. This is a true unmolested example of the iconic 90's hot hatch when big engines in smaller cars become all the rage and Volkswagen's V6 was the perfect combination.Estimate £3,000-£7,000

1965 Morris Mini Cooper Mk. I (998cc) Transmission: manualMileage:40798This superb and largely original Morris Mini Cooper is a one owner from new example. Purchased by the vendor as a 21st birthday present to himself on 9th June 1965 through dealer, Wadhams Holdings Limited of Chichester, where he was completing an apprenticeship at the time. The vendor chose to collect the Mini directly from the Longbridge factory production line and subsequently drove the car back to Wadhams on trade plates. With the help of Wadhams he immediately set about completing some modifications to the car which included fitting wheel arches all round and changing the colour from Tweed Grey to the Opalescent Silver Blue it wears today.Since then, the Mini has resided with the vendor at his West Sussex home covering a mere 40,798 miles from new. Dry stored for the past 33 years, this Mini is in very good and largely original condition. It has never been restored but maintained and recommissioned where necessary and as such it is showing some light patina. The paintwork is good, and the original interior has survived very well indeed. On our inspection the Cooper fired up on first turn and sounded fantastic.Fitted with its original and rare Cosmic alloy wheels, matching numbers engine and gearbox, and its original registration number 'GBP 777C'. The history file that accompanies the car includes the original sales invoice from Wadhams Holdings Limited, many old MoT test certificates including the most recent undertaken in 2017, old tax discs, various sundry bills, the original buff logbook, original workshop manual and drivers handbook, original service booklet with stamps, the vendors hand written vehicle maintenance log, current V5C registration document, and the Heritage Certificate confirming its original specification. This wonderful Mini Cooper Mk. I, complete with its excellent history is a real time warp example and offers a one off opportunity for Mini enthusiasts and collectors alike. Offered at a very sensible reserve due to the vendors advancing years, we are sure this British classic will be keenly contested at auction.

1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Dual Cowl Open Tourer Transmission: manualMileage:9064In 1925, the 'New Phantom', with its overhead-valve engine and four-wheel brakes was introduced. The example offered today left the factory in October 1928 for coachbuilders Arthur Mulliner to be fitted with coachwork for its first owner, Lord Hillingdon of Paulerspury, Northamptonshire. (A photograph of the finished car appears in 'Those Elegant Rolls-Royce' by Lawrence Dalton). In the post-war years, it fell into disrepair and was finally taken off the road in 1961. After lying unused for over 40 years, the car was then purchased in 2002 by the previous owner who set about returning '83WR' to its former glory. This most elegant example has have been the subject of an extensive restoration over the years with the engine rebuilt from the ground up by noted Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists, Ristes, in 2003. The exhaust system was also replaced from manifold to fish-tail tip. The radiator was fitted with a new core and all shutters were nickel plated, new hoses and original pattern clips throughout. Both front and rear spring leaves were separated, cleaned, de-scaled, greased and re-assembled. The rear shock absorbers were dismantled, cleaned and painted with all new leather gaiters fitted to the spring with triple lock panels on the running boards for access. The Front axle was also sandblasted and painted with kingpins built up and re-machined to size. 2000 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante Transmission: automaticMileage:24238Introduced in 1993 to the public, the handsome new DB7 was styled by Ian Callum, its lines were evocative of earlier Aston Martin models and elements of the DB4/5/6 could be seen in its design. Arguably one of the most attractive looking cars ever produced by Aston Martin, the DB7 was well received and attracted new customers worldwide with its traditional layout of the curvaceous two-door coupé body. At the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, Aston Martin introduced the six litre Cosworth-designed and built V12 engine, developing 420bhp and accelerating from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed limited to 185mph. Ian Callum enlarged the grille, added fog lamps and restyled the valances to give the car a more aggressive look. This fabulous example is presented in light metallic blue with a blue and cream leather interior, both of which are in superb condition. The car has a good service history from 2000 to 2023 including all MoT test certificates right up until the present day, although there is a letter on file to explain a slight discrepancy to the mileage on one of the MoT test certificates which was human error at the MoT station! There is also a wind breaker and a hood cover which comes with the car. All the wood, leather and interior are superb! These are rare and highly sought-after sports cars which are drop dead gorgeous and with its V12 engine providing the power, it has the performance to match!

2010 Range Rover TDV8 Autobiography Transmission: automaticMileage:132200The ubiquitous Range Rover, launched in 1970, is now in its fourth generation. The third-generation Range Rover (L322) was designed to accommodate BMW's M62, V8 engines; the manual transmission was dropped entirely leaving only the automatic transmission. 1991 Land Rover Defender 110 200TDi 'Safari' Transmission: manualMileage:85823There is little doubt that one of the most famous shapes on British roads over the last 50 years is the Land Rover. 1972 Fiat 500 Lusso Transmission: manualMileage:35185Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 500 was produced between 1957 and 1975 with limited production of the Fiat 500K estate continuing until 1977. Measuring only three metres long and originally powered by a tiny 479cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term 'small car' and is considered one of the first city cars. Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular car throughout Europe, capturing the hearts and minds of the public. The 'L' or Lusso was manufactured between 1968 and 1972 and featured a much more up to date interior including a renewed dashboard that gave the 500 a more modern feel. This very good 1972 Fiat 500 Lusso was imported from Italy in 2018. It has been subject to a complete restoration, this included repainting the car in pale blue, please note the bonnet requires some remedial work, and a fully customised and hand stitched light blue interior was fitted. The chromework was also replaced with new bumpers, headlight surrounds and new front badge. Finally, the car was fitted with some Cromodora style wheels and hub caps. The car has been subject to a major service and all the fluids, filters and electrical components were replaced. This pretty Fiat 500 is supplied with a V5C registration document. The Fiat 500L captures the essence of classic Italian motoring, combining compact size, charming design, and a spirited driving experience.

1973 Citroën SM 3.0 Manual Transmission: manualMileage:99392In 1961, Citroën began work on 'Project S', a sports variant of the revolutionary Citroën DS. As was customary for the firm, many running concept vehicles were developed, increasingly complex and upmarket from the DS. Citroën purchased Maserati in 1968 with the intention of harnessing Maserati's high-performance V6 engine technology to produce a true Gran Turismo car combining the sophisticated Citroën suspension. The result was the Citroën SM, first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970 and which went on sale in France in September of that year. Factory produced cars were all left hand drive, although right hand conversions were available in the UK and Australia. The origin of the model name 'SM' is not completely clear. The 'S' may derive from the Project 'S' designation and the 'M' perhaps refers to Maserati, hence SM is often assumed to stand for 'Systeme Maserati' or 'Sports Maserati'.Exported new in 1973 to the United States of America, this SM was believed to have been owned by a French diplomat. This would explain the incredibly rare specification of it being a 3.0 litre car, but with a manual transmission. Most 3.0 litre cars were supplied with the automatic gearbox rather than the manual and most of the total production were supplied with the smaller 2.7 litre motor, (thanks to the French 'puissance fiscale' taxation which made large displacement vehicles too expensive to sell in any quantity in France). The vendor acquired the car from Octane magazine Editor David Lillywhite, who had catalogued a long and often painful restoration of the car to its now beautiful state in the magazine. Included in the car's history file along with import documentation, is a full print out of all the articles mapping David Lillywhite's restoration journey. It appears he went through every element of the car and had the car resprayed to match the restoration, as well as replacing the American specification front light clusters to the prettier Perspex covered European units. The vendor reports the car to run and drive very well and is now selling only as part of a downsizing of his considerable collection.Supplied with a V5C registration document along with import papers, original owner's manual and a record of the Octane magazine restoration articles. You would be hard pushed to find another manual 3.0 litre SM, let alone one which has had such love and car lavished upon it as well as having the restoration process followed by the leading classic car magazine.

2004 MG X-Power SV Transmission: manualMileage:5313MG's striking SV was designed by Peter Stevens, Royal College of Art Designer who had been responsible for McLaren's F1 and was based on the platform of the Qvale Mangusta. Prior to the demise of MG Rover, a team has been working on a project to return the company to the forefront of motorsport competition via sports and touring racing which included production of high-performance road cars. The X-Power SV was planned as the ultimate in the company's street legal offerings. Making its debut at the 2002 UK Motor Show the SV boasted a mouth-watering specification including a Ford 4.6 litre V8 power plant with five-speed gearbox and limited slip differential. The design's Italian-built steel box frame chassis (clothed in carbon fibre) was extremely rigid - as it needed to be in order to cope with some 320bhp on tap. The 0-60mph dash could be achieved in under 5.5 seconds whilst top speed was quoted at 165mph.Car number 144 was sold new in May 2004 to Gordon Sturdy who specified his SV as a manual gearbox car painted in Garnet Red Supertallic. Believed to be the only one painted in this shade of red, (most red cars being painted in Solar red), it was specified with 'Oyster' leather and Alcantara interior, automatic climate control, CD Tuner, Infinity speakers, large rear spoiler and track day free flowing exhaust. The supplied original bill of sale shows Mr. Sturdy paid £46,000 for the car and then an additional £870 to have the SV seat upgrade. The car's history file shows receipts for maintenance work carried out by Maidstone Sports Cars, as well as the original owner's handbook, parts list CD, MG X-Power SV book by David Knowles and promotional DVD and book. Whilst officially the second owner, Mr. Stury was for all intents and purpose the first, as the car was first registered to MG Sport and Racing Ltd as a demonstrator. It must have had light use though, as even now the car has only covered 5,313 miles. Purchased by our vendor in 2021, the car formed part of a large eclectic collection of cars and has had only light use. Reported by him to run and drive incredibly well, the car is now only for sale to free up some money and space for an incoming project.Supplied with a V5C registration document, original purchase invoice, book pack, maintenance and service handbooks, many MoT test certificates and invoices. This rare and unique car, believed to be the only in this colour is bound to wow at any car meeting or show, with performance to match its wild styling.Interested parties should note that contrary to the catalogue description, this MG SV X-Power is not the only car painted in Garnet Red, but in fact one of only two cars painted by the factory in the colour.

Lot 254

1969 MG B Roadster Transmission: manualMileage:32081The MGB was launched in May 1962 to replace the MGA and was introduced as a four-cylinder roadster with a coupé added in 1965. It was a relatively modern design at the time of its introduction, utilising a monocoque structure instead of the traditional 'body-on-frame' construction used on both the MGA and MG T-types. The lightweight design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. Manual windows were standard and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. The MGB's performance was considered brisk at the time of its introduction with a 0-60mph time of just over 11 seconds; this was aided by the relatively light weight of the car. Handling was one of the MGB's strong points. The three-bearing 1798cc, B-Series engine produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm with the engine upgraded in October 1964 to a five-bearing crankshaft to improve reliability. The MGB was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones designed to protect the driver and passenger at a 30mph impact. This 1969 MGB Roadster on wire wheels with overdrive was purchased by the current owner in 2001. While in her ownership the car has had very little use, from the MoT test certificate history it has only covered 2,500 miles since 2008 and only 500 miles since 2011. Even with the apparent low mileage, the car has been kept very well maintained and was restored in the original colour and the engine replaced in the 1980's. A new hood was fitted in 2000 and after being laid up for several reasons and then the pandemic, the car has been recently being recommissioned which included replacing the radiator and fitting new batteries. Finished in its original dark green with a black interior piped in white, this MG is supplied with a V5C registration document and a large file containing old registration documents, old MoT test certificates, a number of invoices going back to the 1990's and photographs taken when the restoration was carried out and the new engine fitted. This is an ideal car for someone entering the classic car market especially as it requires a little work to return it to its former glory.

Lot 199

1996 BMW 840Ci Transmission: automaticMileage:104165The Klaus Kapitza-designed 8-Series (chassis code E31) was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989. Though it effectively replaced the 6-Series, it was originally intended as an additional model line - an upmarket range with superior performance and price tag to match. During its ten year reign, the 8-Series was offered in 830i, 840Ci and 850i/Ci form, of which the 840Ci was the second most popular variant. When introduced in mid-1993, it was fitted with a four litre, V8 engine mated to either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. With 282bhp on tap, this version could achieve the 0-62mph sprint in an impressive 6.9 seconds. The fully independent suspension featured struts at the front and an innovative multi-link system with coil springs on the rear. Steering was by ball and nut and braking by discs all round - vented at the front; solid at the rear. Over 1.5 billion Deutsche Marks are said to have been spent on the car's design and development. Though electronically limited to 155mph, the most powerful 8-Series models had a potential top speed of almost 190mph.Originally registered on 11th January 1996, this striking right hand drive BMW 840Ci is equipped with the optional five-speed automatic transmission. The metallic green coachwork is in excellent order, as is the light grey leather interior. A good service history accompanies N245 XGM, with the original service book showing 15 stamps and a comprehensive collection of invoices. Recent work carried out in March this year includes a full service, new front road springs, new fuel lines, new viscous coupling, new stainless steel exhaust system and a new headlining. The cost of this work was £4,737.55 and was carried out by a respected classic car specialist. Whilst the odometer currently reads 147,782 miles, the correct mileage is actually 104,165 miles. A replacement instrument cluster was fitted in September 2009 and the owner could only locate a second-hand unit showing 43,617 miles more than the original unit, this is documented in the history file. Supplied with a V5 registration document and an MoT test certificate valid until 26th September 2023, we are advised by the vendor that 'she drives as good as she looks'. The 8-Series BMW is a magnificent design with superb ergonomics. A well cared for example such as this is surely one for the future.

Lot 253

2010 Land Rover 110 Transmission: manualMileage:62700The Land Rover Defender was launched in 1948 and, incredibly, production only finished in January 2016 after a continuous run of 67 years. Outwardly, there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. A full-length bonnet, revised grille, plus the fitting of wheel arch extensions to cover wider-track axles are the most noticeable changes. Internally, coil springs offered a more comfortable ride and a permanent four-wheel drive system derived from the Range Rover featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential. A modernised interior and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engine characterised things under the skin. In August 2011, Land Rover announced an update of the Defender for the 2012 model year. By this time, Land Rover publicly acknowledged that it was working on a project to produce an all-new replacement for the Defender. This stunning 2.4 litre TDCi Land Rover Defender 110 with the desirable seven seat configuration is finished in Stornoway Grey with a black trim. First registered on 31st March 2010 and with just three former keepers the last two having been in the vendors family since 2012 passing from sibling to sibling. This example also boasts an uprated Alpine stereo and speaker system and alarm immobiliser. Recently fitted with new brakes discs and pads, new side-steps, full LED light conversion and new like for like Continental tyres. Supplied with the original owner's book pack and service book including a comprehensive service history with numerous original invoices, MoT test certificates and original toolkit. With two original keys, this is a fabulous example of the iconic, practical and robust collectors Defender.

Lot 204

1984 MG Metro Turbo Transmission: manualMileage:7376The MG Metro was introduced in October 1982 some six months after the launch of the MG Metro 1300. The MG Metro Turbo was a leader for its day with the Lotus Engineering assisted design for the very comprehensive changes that were done to the engine which was very capable of handling the modest 93 bhp the standard engine was quoted at, although many actually delivered closer to 100 in standard unmodified form. Later tuned race cars would push that power to 200bhp, a massive power level for that period and even more so for a 1300cc engine. Other positive features included powerful servo assisted brakes using four-pot calipers and ventilated discs up front. The Turbo also came with a bodykit that provided a front spoiler and four-wheel spats to go with the MG Metro rear spoiler and this together with the use of Turbo only specific larger 13" alloy wheels and low profile tyres the individual look was enhanced considerably. One of the pocket rockets of its day, only 22,000 were made and survivors very rarely come to market now.First registered on 21st March 1984, the MG Metro Turbo offered here is nothing short of incredible. The car is completely original having been lovingly cared for by its first owner for the first 30 years of its life. Mr. Lamont purchased the car new from Lex Mead of Bexleyheath, Kent for the sum of £5,500. The car was used lightly for the first five years when a mere 6,532 miles were put on it. The car was then taken off the road by Mr. Lamont and stored in the garage at his new home until July 1999 when it was displayed at the Guildford MG show. Whilst stored the car had been regularly started to maintain it. Winning its class in concours events in both 2001 and 2002, Mr. Lamont felt he had made his point that his car was truly exceptional. In the years since it has covered few miles, but always maintained in perfect running order. Amazingly, all the documentation remains with the car from the original V5 logbook, to its original purchase invoice book pack and manuals. Along with the prizes won there are many receipts and relevant period publications. The car is so original that other than a light refurbishment to the seat covers in 2012 and a total brake overhaul in 2013, the car is totally original. It sits on a set of original wheels with modern tyres, but the original wheels that came with the car from new and their original tyres are also included. Having resided since 2019 as part of a large collection, the vendor has decided to move the car on to free up both space and funds for a new project. He reports the car to run and drive very well and is a time warp example, impossible to replicate.Supplied with a V5C registration document, original invoice, book pack, maintenance and service handbooks, many MoT test certificates, invoices, photo CD and publications. This presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a three owner, full history from new, perfect condition example.

1965 David Brown Tractor Transmission: manualMileage:57851Probably better known for his ownership of Aston Martin from 1947 to 1972, David Brown become M.D. of the family business, David Brown Gear Company Ltd in 1931. He turned to tractor manufacturing in 1936 in collaboration with Harry Ferguson, manufacturing the Ferguson-Brown tractor in West Yorkshire. The company broke new ground which others were only to follow later, but being a pioneering company ultimately led to its downfall. The Ferguson-Brown had many innovative features, including the use of cast alloy for many components which was light but prone to damage. David Brown Ltd became one of the largest manufacturers of tractors, however the owner's continued subsidisation of Aston Martin was unsustainable, and the sports car maker was sold in 1972. The tractor division was purchased by Tenneco International and re-badged the product as 'Case'.Manufactured in 1965, this tractor is thought to have spent its early life working on farms up until the early 90's. This tractor has been restored to a good standard and we are led to believe the work was undertaken in the early 2000's by its then owner, since the restoration the tractor has been used sparingly and used more as a working ornament than as an agricultural tractor hence its colourway. Boasting a new battery, the three-cylinder diesel engine started on the button during our visit, this tractor is one not to be missed and is ready to be used.Estimate £3,000-£7,000

1972 Ford Transit Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:99Ford's ubiquitous Transit range needs little introduction. Launched in 1965, it has been Europe's best-selling light commercial vehicle for the last 40 years, and is now into its fourth-generation and Mk.7 incarnation. More intriguingly, in the 1970s, no less than 95 per cent of robberies employing a vehicle apparently involved a Transit of some description! Famed for bringing car-like handling, drive-ability and comfort to the van world, it was the ideal base for all manner of conversions, including motor caravans. Power in the early models was supplied by 1.7 or 2.0-litre V4 versions of Ford's Essex powerplant. The suspension was deliberately basic, with live axles front and rear. A wide track provided exceptional stability.Built in 1972, but not registered until 1st February 1973, this Mk. I 'single wheel' Ford Transit presents beautifully having just gone through a full restoration. The body was stripped back to bare metal at which point all necessary repairs were undertaken. This included repairs to the floors, chassis legs, bulk head, doors, windows and windscreen surrounds. The van was then treated to a full respray in Ford Light Blue. Fitted with a later Ford Transit engine along with a five-speed gearbox, the van also benefits from modern vehicle reliability. It has also been subtly upgraded with a hidden removable tow hitch, (which hides behind the rear number plate) and the rear interior has been professionally 'wooded out' by a skilled carpenter to a high standard. The van is reported to 'start on the button' and to run and drive very well. Forming part of a large private collection throughout its restoration, the van was originally intended to be a race support vehicle for the vendors historic racing endeavours and is now only now for sale to free up some space for a new incoming project. These early Mk. I Transits are hard to come by, let alone in such wonderful condition and sympathetically upgraded to be practical and pleasant to drive in modern conditions and as such, is an opportunity not to be missed.

1958 Cadillac Sedan De Ville Transmission: automaticMileage:61700Updated for 1958 with a new grille and quad headlamps, the Cadillac Series Sixty-Two Sedan De Ville was powered by a 365 cu in (6.0 litre) V8 engine allied to three-speed automatic transmission. Overseen by the legendary Harley Earl, everything from the rubber guards on the front bumpers to the chrome caps on the rear wings was styled to the max.Imported from Colorado in 1987, '732 XUR' has had just four UK keepers over the past thirty-four years. Showing 61,700 miles on the odometer, this Cadillac has benefited from an extensive brake overhaul within the last three years including the fitment of new brake shoes, master cylinders, front cylinders, brake servos and hoses. More recently in 2023 a complete new stainless steel exhaust system was fitted as well as new tyres all round. Finished in light green with white and green upholstery, this Sedan de Ville does not want for road presence! A fabulous piece of Americana, the be-finned behemoth features such niceties as power steering, power brakes and automatic transmission. The Series 62 is offered for sale with a large history file comprising the original workshop manual, Colorado State title document, numerous invoices, old MoT test certificates and a recent MoT test certificate valid until May 2024. Driven to the auction directly from the vendors private collection in the heart of Kent, this Cadillac really is an opportunity not to be missed.

* Patchwork. A finely embroidered patchwork panel, Lincoln, 1895, a large linen panel composed of hexagons in alternating colours of ivory and sage green, with small ivory squares between, each patch expertly embroidered in yellow and pale grey silk threads, using a variety of stitches, including satin, long and short, stem, bullion, French knots, buttonhole, feather, chain, each hexagon or square with initials, monogram, lettering, symbol, or illustration, e.g., a large pomegranate, children at play, flowers, birds, and insects, a sailing boat, 'Crowland Abbey', a pair of handscreen fans, 'Yacht Lorna Doone. N. &. S.YC.', a spider in a web, 'S.S. Mary and Nicolas', the lamb of God, an Oriental gentleman, a cat licking its paw, an elaborate Tudor rose, etc., one panel lettered 'In aid of the National Schools', 2 panels with earl's coronet lettered 'Winchilsea' and 'Edith Winchilsea' respectively, central panel with embroidered shield (becoming detached) topped by a mitre and cross within a circular frame incorporating the words 'Diocesis Lincolnienis', with the lettering 'Spalding 1895' above and 'Edward Lincoln' below, bordered all round with cream cotton (originally the backing to a silk border now perished), very occasional minor loss of stitching, a few small marks, and some light discolouration to border, backed with dark cream cotton (left and right-hand sides not stitched together), 165 x 240.5 cm (65 x 94.75 ins)QTY: (1)NOTE:A beautifully-made panel surviving in very good condition, evidently made in Lincoln to raise money for the National Schools which were established in the 19th century by the Church of England to provide an education for children of the poor. Edward King (1829-1910) was the Bishop of Lincoln from 1885 to 1910, hence his mention at the centre of the panel. He devoted himself to pastoral work, particularly amongst the poor, so this cause would presumably have been close to his heart. The Winchilsea name is prominent and therefore it seems likely that Edith Finch-Hatton, Countess of Winchilsea (1855-1944), was instrumental in organising the project. Unlike the usual 'friendship' quilts in which many different hands participate with varying results, this piece appears to have been made by a small number of highly competent hands. This leads us to speculate that members of a local embroidery guild executed the stitching, with individuals paying for a patch to be embroidered with their name, initials or chosen symbol; the finished piece may then have been displayed, or auctioned to the highest bidder.

Lot 662
