In 1883 publishers Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Company became Cassell & Company, Limited, suggesting a publication date of 1883 or later for these editions of Fulton and Blakston. (3)
Yarrell (William). A History of British Birds, 5 volumes (including the 2 supplements) in 3, 1st edition, John van Voorst, [1837]-56, half-titles, numerous wood-engravings in the text, autograph letter signed from Yarrell to Lambert Blackwell Larking (single bifolium, dated 23 June 1843, creased where folded) tipped to volume 1 initial blank, frequent contemporary marginalia in at least 2 different hands, including lengthy notes probably by Larking to volume 1 pp. 149 (dated 1851), 204-5 (dated 1862), and 276 (dated 1861), a lengthy note signed JWL to volume 1 p. 383 (see below), and numerous cross-references to illustrations, indexes added to rear blanks and free endpapers in a contemporary calligraphic hand, bookplates of John Wingfield Larking to front pastedowns, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, near-contemporary tan calf, richly gilt spines, twin morocco labels, spines slightly faded, extremities slightly rubbed, light mottling to sides, 8vo (21.9 x 13.7 cm) Freeman 4177; Nissen IVB 1049. With an autograph letter signed from Yarrell presenting the first three volumes to Lambert Blackwell Larking (1797-1868), vicar of Ryarsh in Kent (the two supplements were published later). Yarrell advises Larking 'not to have them permanently bound for a twelvemonth, by which time the impressions [of the wood-engravings] will have become hard', and acknowledges receipt of some shell specimens. Larking is mentioned at volume 3 p. 132 as the source of a 'Polish Swan' which Yarrell exhibited at the Zoological Society. The first volume contains what appear to be Larking's annotations describing various bird sightings, including one (pp. 204-5) at 'the Roughets', a woodland in his village of Ryarsh. Another annotation describing a sighting in Sicily is signed 'JWL', that is, Larking's son John Wingfield Ryarsh (1801-1891), sometime British consul in Alexandria. (3)

Bibliographically confusing with Nissen calling for 18 plates, Stafleu & Cowan calling for 16. Presentation copy, inscribed at foot of title: "Gift of the author to Littleton Brown, M.A., F.R.S.". Brown is mentioned by Dillenius in his Historia Muscorum, and assisted him by gathering specimens in Wales, Herefordshire and Shropshire. Interesting provenance with John Innys (died 1778), a London bookseller, who formed a publishing partnership with his brother William before later moving to Redland Court in Bristol. George Weare Braikenridge (1775-1856) was an English antiquarian, who purchased Broomwell House in Brislington, Bristol in 1823 where he amassed the important Braikenridge Collection of Bristol related history and topography. The collection is mostly now held at the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol Central Library and Bristol Archives. (1)

Provenance: William Borrer (1781-1862), his copy with most likely his annotations. Borrer was an esteemed English botanist, who contributed much of his extensive knowledge of British plants to many botanical works of the period and pioneered British Lichenology, culminating in his 'Specimen of a Lichenographia Brittanica' in 1839, along with Dawson Turner. Maynard at head of volume III title and endpaper, owner ink stamp of Dawson Turner to volumes III & IV title versos, endpapers renewed, volume I in modern green half morocco, volumes III & IV in contemporary calf, rebacked and repaired, a little rubbed and scuffed, folio Provenance: Dawson Turner (1775-1858), English botanist and antiquary, father-in-law of Sir William Jackson Hooker and Sir Francis Palgrave. Nissen BBI 826. The full work was published in four volumes from 1787-97 with 160 plates, noted for their accuracy from repeated observations and the skillful use of the compound microscope. (2)

Edwards after Hooker, lacking two explanatory text leaves oppsite plate LIV, occasional light spotting and offsetting (plates generally bright and clean), bookplate of Joseph Dickinson, M.D., contemporary blindstamped calf, modern calf reback with red label to spine, a little rubbed, 4to Provenance: Joseph Dickinson (1811-1865) graduated as M.D. in Dublin in 1843 and practised and lectured in Liverpool, where he published his Flora of Liverpool in 1851. Nissen BBI 916; Stafleu & Cowan 2987. Hooker's monograph on lichens, described by DSB as "[Hooker's] most beautiful work". (1)
