This is the issue including engraved plates of the various temples and monuments and is rarely seen in large paper format.The second records the 1848 sale of the majority of the great art collection at Stowe following the bankruptcy of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, who was rumoured to have left for the Continent with debts exceeding £1,000,000. It totalled £75,562 4s 6d over 35 days, and included the famous "Chandos Portrait" of Shakespeare which sold to the Earl of Ellesmere for £372 15s. and in 1856 became the first donation to the newly-created National Portrait Gallery.

Slavery.- [Newton (John)] An Authentic Narrative of some Remarkable and Interesting Particulars in the Life of ⁂⁂**...in a Series of Letters to the Reverend Mr.Thomas Haweis, ?first edition, engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map of the coast of Guinea, 4pp. advertisements at end, light staining to title, contemporary ink signature of Mary Ann Johnson to front free endpaper, contemporary sheep with double gilt fillet border, rubbed, splits to joints, 8vo, R.Hett, for J.Johnson, 1764.⁂ Very rare. John Newton (1725-1807) was a captain of slave ships, who himself spent some time as a slave in Sierra Leone, but later repented of his deeds and became an Evangelical preacher and prominent abolitionist. With the support of Thomas Haweis he was appointed curate at Olney in Buckinghamshire and later rector of St.Mary Woolnoth in London where he associated with Hannah More and William Wilberforce. He is best known today for writing the hymn 'Amazing Grace'.Library Hub records several editions but most appear to be second editions or later, with only one printed copy (National Library of Scotland) of the first edition. WorldCat adds a copy in the British Library and one in the State Library of New South Wales. We have been unable to trace any copy of a 1764 edition at auction.

Cothele on the banks of the Tamar, the ancient Seat of the Rt.Hon.ble the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, hand-coloured lithographed pictorial title, lithographed dedication and plan, 16 hand-coloured tinted lithographed plates by Day & Haghe after Condy, a few leaves with small tears at edges repaired, light offsetting to verso of plates, Henry Fox Talbot's copy with presentation inscription "from his affectionate sister Caroline /Mount Edgcumbe 1st January 1847" to front free endpaper, endpapers foxed, original blue cloth with Mount Edgcumbe arms in gilt to upper cover, rather rubbed and faded, handsomely rebacked and cornered in blue straight-grain morocco, spine ruled in gilt, [Abbey, Scenery 414], folio, [c.1840].⁂ Excellent association copy of this work on Cothele, a medieval house with Tudor additions in Cornwall, which has changed little over the last five centuries.William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-77), inventor and pioneer of photography. It was originally published in 1846 in a very limited number (probably only a few more than the 52 for subscribers), the first of a projected survey of the mansions of England and Wales. Five further volumes on Lancaster and Chester were produced in 1847-50 but none thereafter due to Twycross's death in 1852.

Pavli epistolas commentarii, woodcut printer's device and seventeenth century manuscript ownership inscription in ink to title, bookplate, lacking OO5, second Z gathering mis-bound, scattered worm holes within text throughout, ornately blind-stamped panelled calf over wooden boards, covers with eternal knot centre-pieces, borders composed of medallion profile portraits ?of peoples of different nations, gilt acorns (some dulling), and rosettes, amongst other decoration, gilt title to head of inner panel of upper cover, spine in compartments, remains of metal clasps, remnants of paper label to spine, some light wear in places, [VD 16 J 433], folio, Basel, Johann Herwagen, 1536.⁂ A previous owner's note suggests that the binding is by the 'Mauresken Meister of Basel', about whom we have found very little information.
