A scarce 1887 Turkish contract 9.5mm Mauser bolt action rifle, 49½” overall, barrel 30”, the breech stamped with toughra and various arsenal or ordnance marks, number 123847 on the bolt only, all other markings, including serial numbers, in Arabic, all parts stamped with a small crescent, with sling swivels and original cleaning rod. GWO & C (some light pitting, the barrel and action reblacked overall). As the cartridge for this weapon was only manufactured for a short period, many obsolete rifles were destroyed. Plate 7

Reverse: “Presented to ... (recipient’s name “William Weston L.B.L.H.V” engraved onto blank tablet) by the Town of Birmingham May XXVIII MDCCCII”, within oakwreath. Now fitted with brazed shoulder loop and ring suspender. Diam 47mm. GVF, in half of original fitted leather covered presentation case. Plate 15. An officer’s silver plated shoulder belt plate of The 19th Light Dragoons, of flat oval form, engraved with a breastplate and trophy of lances and standards, the latter bearing “GR” and “19 LD”, all within a vine leaf border, maker’s marks “BG” on the back, hook and 2 stud fastening, 2-3/8” x 1-7/8”. A rare OR’s heavy canvas valise or backpack of The 97th (Invernessshire Highlanders) Regiment, the outside painted light brown witih roundel on front cover “F/97” in circle “Inverness Shire Regt”, soldier’s name “1: McDonald” on lower inner edge, leather fastening and shoulder straps; the regiment was raised in 1795 and disbanded the following year. Good Condition Plate 52
Lord Portarlington’s shabraque 23rd Light Dragoons, length 47”, edge embroidered in silver lace, crowned “GR”, “Egypt” and “23 LD” in front and rear section, Quite Good Condition but mothed in many parts. Plate 56. Note: Colonel Lord Portarlington fought in Egypt, the Peninsula War and at Waterloo. In all probability the shabraque was the one used at Waterloo. Provenance from a house sale of his property.
A light cavalry officer’s sword of The 10th Hussars, presented by The Prince of Wales in 1808, broad, curved, fullered blade 32½”, double edged at point and etched for three quarters length, on both sides, in imitation damascene panels, with large barbed serpent scrolls around central panels, the panel on one side bearing a trophy of arms and on the other “H.R.H. George P.W. to R.E.W. 10 Hussars 1808”, gilt stirrup hilt, the langets shaped around silver plated Prince of Wales’s feathers, line engraved and facetted strap knucklebow, prominent forward sloping stepped pommel, foliate backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip. Very Good Condition for age, the hilt retaining much original gilt. Plate 63. Note: the sword of Rowland Edward Williams, Cornet 1805, Lieutenant 1806, Captain 1809
A silver hilted light cavalry officer’s service sword, plain, fullered carved blade 27½”, with sharp edge, silver stirrup hilt with langets, hallmarked MB London 1809, plain pommel and backstrap, ribbed horn grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition (some wear and light pitting to blade and scabbard). Plate 66
A presentation light company officer’s sword of The 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment from Lieut Col Herford, curved blade 27½”, etched with crowned GR cypher and trophies within floral and foliate panels, heavy gilt stirrup hilt with cut away corners, embossed foliate langets, panelled crossguard and knucklebow, pronounced forward sloping pommel and backstrap ornamented with stylized foliage, smooth facetted ivory grip, in its ornamental brass scabbard, pierced with sunburst circles and key pattern panels, backed with red leather, presentation inscription on locket. Good Condition the hilt retaining approximately 40% gilt,with traces to scabbard (hilt loose, blade some wear). Plate 66. Note: The presentation inscription reads “From Lieut Col Herford to Lieut William Bace of the 1 Batt 61 Foot. by gratitude for his Valour and Support in the Action at Toulouse, June 8th 1814”
A 1796 type infantry officer’s dress sword, shallow diamond section blade 32½”, the centre flattened for most of its length, etched with pre 1801 Royal Arms and supporters, scrolling and “For My Country & King”, on both sides, flat double shell guard with plain outlined panels, knucklebow and quillon, octagonal V shaped urn pommel with prominent stud, simulated wirebound grip. Good Condition the hilt retaining approximately 85% original gilt (light wear and pitting to blade). Plate 66
