Hollis & Sons, London” and on the right side “Ammunition 360”, the plain border engraved bar in wood lock engraved “I Hollis & Sons”, the walnut fullstock with horn fore end cap, chequered fore end and wrist, and vacant oval GS escutcheon, the plain steel mounts include scrolled trigger guard. GWO & C (some light surface rust and dark patina). A good untouched item. Plate 7

A scarce 10.4 mm Swiss Vetterli Model 1878 Stutzer bolt action carbine, 38¾” overall, barrel 20¾”, number 11642, the frame stamped “Waffenfabrik Bern” and serial number, the spur trigger guard with double set triggers, the walnut stock with chequered fore end grip, sling swivels and steel cleaning rod. GWO & C (light pitting and age patina to metalwork, some bruising and staining to stock). It is believed that less than 6000 of these carbines were produced. Plate 7

An unusual Caucasian percussion blunderbuss pistol, 18” overall, the 9¾” swamped twist steel Indo Persian barrel with raised chiselled panels at breech and muzzle and traces of gold damascened bands, the bar in wood lock of unusual tear drop shape engraved with toothed borders and scrolls, the banded wood gun shaped three quarter stock with small MOP inlaid panels around barrel tang (several missing), and steel mounts, the trigger guard engraved with scrolls, initials ”RT” and number “235”. (16cmx11cm) The first is a contact print with 2 photos of the SL11 On the reverse is typed in English, the description of the ship, with a typed addendum “A friend of mine in Germany gave me these photos he is with a Aero Squadron. I was talking with him last week. Home is a long way off. Dan”(sic). The following 5 photographs all have typed descriptions in English as follows (spelling corrected). “German officers in the cabin of one of the big Dirigibles” , “On top of the German Dirigible LZ90 showing one of the machine-gun nests which has 6 machine-guns in it all together capable of firing 4200 shots in one minute”, “Big ship Landing” (the “LZ” is visible, the number is not), “German Dirigible under construction”, “German Gas Producing machine. This machine generates hydrogen gas for the big Dirigibles”. Also four emotive British cards showing WW1 Zeppelins: “The end of the Baby killer” tinted card showing a burning rigid airship caught in spotlight beams ;“Zepp” showing a Zeppelin at height caught in searchlight beams, with the silhouette of an officer gazing up; “The low down thing that plays the low down game” showing a Zeppelin at low level caught by four searchlights, over the silhouette of homes and factories, and “The Raider” similar to “Zepp”, but with silhouette of a village and church steeple; one German WW1 postcard sold for charity to support the families of Imperial German Navy, colourful card showing a Zeppelin raid, with the airships lit from below by the light of the burning docks also page 2 of the Daily Mirror dated 6 September 1916 reporting Leefe-Robinson’s VC for destruction of the German Rigid Airship SL11.German “Popular people in History – Graf Zeppelin” Card (23cmx16cm). The earliest shows US Army Airship D-3 in Flight; (D-3 took part in the Mitchell bombing Trials), and also early trials for Aircraft hook-on experiments (used to test approaches not actual hook-on). Five original photographs showing “USS Shenandoah”, one unmoored on the open field, and four in the hanger under repair for damage to both nose and tail areas after a storm on 16 January 1924. “Zeppelin” Hand coloured lithograph print by E Montaut, mounted, framed and glazed. (101cm x 56cm). The title “Zeppelin” is at bottom right. The lithograph shows LZ3 flying at speed up a lake under a sunset. Startled herons are scattering in the path of the giant flying machine, while ruined castles on each peak catch the last of the day’s fading light. No copyright or date is visible. Signature to lower right. Redwood moulded frame with gilt inner. GC although the strong flaming sunset has been muted by time and exposure. See Plate 4

A rare early French tinplate clockwork airship toy. Based on the non-rigid airship ‘Republique’. 23.5cm painted in sandy light brown with ‘Republique’ to one side, simple open gondola beneath containing single military style figure. With simple clockwork motor slung to the rear with twin bladed round paper propeller-one blade missing. QGC some wear/rusting overall. One hanging strap to gondola detached. See Plate 7 Note: The Republique was completed in June 1908, flew for the first time June 24 and was handed over to the French army on 31 July of that year. Although she was operationally successful, the Republique crashed in 1909 due to a mechanical failure, killing all four crew members.

A Lehmann tinplate clockwork airship toy 767. 25cm. In anodised light cream finish with red and black lithographed detailing, named ‘Los Angeles’ with U.S. star markings. Also marked ‘767 Marke Lehmann’ and patent information. Fitted with two open gondolas, two forward elevators two engine pods (one propeller missing), rear fins, (missing flaps) and the hub of the twin bladed propeller. QGC for age some wear overall. Clockwork motor in WO. See Plate 7

A rare Tipp & Co tinplate clockwork lithographed airship toy. ‘R.101’. Probably produced for the British market, this example could only have been produced for a very short period due to the fate of the airship. 34cm long in gold tinted silver with blue litho detailing, with yellow tinplate propeller. An example with a battery powered red light slung underneath. GC some rust spotting in places, also to battery holder. See Plate 8

An unusual clockwork tinplate airship toy. Produced by CKO (Kellerman) in the 1920’s. A 20cm tinplate dished tray, 2cm deep probably to contain water. Over which is a double arched bridge with a light house to the centre, to which is connected a small Zeppelin style airship. When the motor is wound the airship rotates. Under the motor is connected a two sided wire to support two boats? Which would ‘sail’ around in the water. Complete with key. An unusual item. VGC for age, two boats? missing. See Plate 8

A fine display Model of LZ129, Hindenburg. A pre-world war 2 example, possibly intended for US boardroom due to all legends being in English. Constructed of wood, carvel built on plinth. 174.5mm x 43mm x 46 approx. Intended to be viewed from both sides, silvered top half with national insignia on top fin, lower hull is natural wood, with hand-drawn depictions of the internal compartments, with annotations in English on both sides of the ship, depicting interior features. Port side plinth has ships name and designation and date of launch in gold paint, while starboard side shows ships technical data in imperial measurements. GC but requires light restoration. Some damage to starboard aileron, Engine cars are missing, and an attempt at varnishing has left some unsightly drips on this lovely ship. See Plate 9

A large salad/fruit bowl. Made of a tinted green light alloy for use on the Zeppelins Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. 30cm diameter, 10cm deep, stamped ‘Zeppelin’ under airship to base. Complete with often missing serving spoon and fork. Together with a small covered butter dish of similar material and also marked with the Zeppelin stamp, with a blued and silver finish. Take off lid with turned wooden knob. 14cm diameter. Also a small open butter dish, 11.5cm. GC minor marking for age. See Plate 22 (3)

An American produced ‘Pittsburgh Dirigible Searchlight’. A chrome plated external light with its adjustable bracket and clamp. The convex 6cm lens is contained in a 10.5cm cylinder with a large maker’s plate attached. Produced by ‘The Pittsburgh Electric Specialist Co’. PA USA. GC some age wear overall. Lens chipped on the edges. See Plate 22

A fine French style lime green opaque glass liqueur decanter. In the shape of a dirigible 36cm with leaf decoration, plated central filler, white, red blue tail end with gold band decoration. Mounted to a 4 wheeled plated curved chassis 26cm x 10cm fitted with two piece disc wheels each 9cm in diameter. With a raised rectangular octagonal fretted base fitted with a dispensing tap to 6 green opaque ‘shot’ glasses held by 6 outward facing ringed supports. GC some age wear to plating, light cracking to glasses. See Plate 23

An early American ‘Air Way Bally Product’ mechanical pinball machine. A heavy black painted wooden framed professional gaming machine 90cm x 42cm x 28cm. Activated by inserting a coin into a slot. ‘A game of skill for amusement only’, ‘10 balls for 1c’. Also with instructions to operate. Each ball destination is marked by an American city name, for example ‘New York’, ‘Boston’, ‘St. Louis’, etc. Also each with the outline of a plane and points value plus two airships to the centre. A 1920’s - 30’s period German Keg Tap (beer dispenser). A tall (56cm) cylindrical plated metal pressurised bar mounted ‘tap’ with Zeppelin and cloud decoration. Fixing to the circular base to attach to the bar counter and hose to cellar. Probably for use with large litre steins of ‘Zeppelin Bier’ or similar. VGC light cleaning required. See Plate 26

Very interesting Wooden Cheroot Cigar box in the shape of an Airship. (25cm x 16cm x 20cm) A cylindrical airship on a wooden stand, made of turned wooden ends joined by an metal body, the top of which is a wooden lid hinged at the left to reveal a storage container. The airship is raised above the simple representation of a gondola by a wooden support at either end, and twisted wire stays. The gondola is weighted down by an Anchor and chain. In front of the airship is a cigar cutter and metal striker for matches, to the left is a turned wooden container (6cm diameter) in which is a corrugated brass strip; to the right of the cigar cutter is a turned wooden container (4cm diameter) for matches. At the rear of the stand are 2 small posts with a chain between (broken). The stand is raised from the table by four button legs. Light cleaning required. GC despite broken decorative chain at the rear. See Plate 26

A rare child’s version of a Zeppelin crewman’s cap. Of Navy blue cloth has a light blue band and light blue piping around the crown, which also has wire stiffening. It bears a black tailless cap tally woven in gold with the words ‘Graf Zeppelin’ in letter form quite unlike the original example. The front of the cap bears the National cockade. No lining has been fitted to the cap. GC minor wear. Together with an unusual old ivory paper knife or page turner. 34cm overall length, scrimshaw engraved on one side ‘LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin’, plus a representation of a Zeppelin and ‘Kapt Heinrich Kubis’. Also a Bakelite combined paper-weight/pen holder. The base with groove for a pencil and impressed with a representation of the Hindenburg, below which is ‘Hindenburg’ in white script.
