Blue and White Awata Glazed Container, 17th/18th Century Of tall cylindrical shape with a flat rim and continuously painted with a village scene in the mountains, the upper portion with light brown glaze, height 15" — 38 cm. Provenance: Japanese Ceramics from the Collection of Sir Cornelius Van Horne (lots 28-30) Sir William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915), president of Canadian Pacific Railway and Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.C), was an avid art collector and one of Montreal’s most significant pre-war collections, which also included Asian works of art. Van Horne had a particular fondness for Japanese porcelain and kept meticulous records of his collection, assigning specific inventory numbers to the majority of his items. Following his death, most of Van Horne’s Asian pottery was bequeathed to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Years later, after the passing of his wife Lady van Horne, a portion of the collection was donated to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Starting Price: $200

Examples, not necessarily in each lot, include Vivian’s 10th Light Dragoons, Royal Foot Artillery, Jaquinots 3rd Chasseurs, Milhaud’s Cruissars, Lefebvre-Desnouettes’ Imperial Guard Light Cavalry. Each figure is authentically uniformed and painted in superb detail; many mounted, on handsome horses with finely finished saddles, bridles and equipment. Also a few examples of artillery. Plus a 4-wheel Foden flatbed lorry in red with grey-brown float, retouched or repainted, and Foden has bent rear axle, missing rear tyre, headboard and front float fixing, glue damage, significant chipping; van has small crack at base of rear door, crazed tyres.
