FLYNN ERROL: (1909-1959) Australian Actor. D.S., Errol Flynn, being a signed cheque, n.p. (Hollywood, California), 21st June 1945. The partially printed cheque, completed entirely in Flynn's hand, is drawn on the California Bank and is made payable to Mocambo for the sum of $50. Two light red and black ink bank cancellations only very slightly affect the first part of Flynn's signature, which remains perfectly legible. Lightly mounted and professionally matted in white beneath a colour 6 x 8.5 image of Flynn. Framed and glazed in a silver coloured frame to an overall size of 17 x 24. VG Mocambo was a popular nightclub of the 1940s & 1950s, located on Sunset Strip, and frequented by Flynn and many other film stars of the day including Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Marlene Dietrich and Jayne Mansfield.

An unusual white silk scarf, with blue embroidered Yvonne, at one end, previously belonging to the actress, individually signed and inscribed in black inks by a variety of Hollywood film stars and entertainers including Lucille Ball (full signature), Desi Arnaz, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Jack Oakie, Betty Hutton, Ray Milland, Roy Rogers, Hoot Gibson and four others. Some light overall staining and age wear, G Many of the signatures have additional inscriptions to 'Ken' [Ross-MacKenzie], a well known Canadian photographer and De Carlo's cousin. It is believed that the signed scarf was presented to him as a get well soon gift following an illness.

The cheque is drawn on the account of Marilyn Monroe Productions Inc. at the Colonial Trust Company and is made payable to Marilyn Monroe Productions Inc. for the sum of $3251.57. Two black ink bank cancellations only slightly affect Monroe's signature, which is also a little faded although legible. A light band of uniform discoloration to the right edge, only slightly affecting Monroe's surname. Lightly mounted and professionally matted in white beneath an original 4to edition of Picturegoer magazine, 9th August 1952, featuring an image of Monroe with the printed caption The Loneliest Star in Hollywood. BOGART & BACALL: BOGART HUMPHREY (1899-1957) American Actor & BACALL LAUREN (1924- ) American Actress, both Academy Award winners. Individual blue fountain pen ink signatures by both Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall on separate pages removed from an autograph album. Bogart's page has two small sepia magazine photographs neatly affixed, and Bacall's one. Signed by both with their names alone. Bogart's signature is a touch light in places, although perfectly legible. Individually matted in white beneath reproduction portraits and framed and glazed in identical silver coloured frames, Bogart to an overall size of 15.5 x 24.5 and Bacall 14.5 x 22.5. VG, 2

WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985) American Actor & Film Director, Academy Award winner. An excellent autograph statement signed, Orson Welles, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Paris?), n.d. On the verso of a printed telegram form from the Hotel Ritz, Welles has boldly penned a statement, in black ink, relating to Charles Chaplin, in full, 'Charlot belongs to that grand horizon of the world imagination where stand the silhouettes of Quixote, Pantagruel, Pickwick, Puck and Punchinello…As a Film-Creator Chaplin has made his medium somthing [sic] more valid than an art.' A fine statement connecting two of the most powerful names in the history of cinema. Lightly mounted to the top edge to a larger card. A couple of light stains just affect a few letters of text and the first letter of Welles' signature. BERN PAUL: (1889-1932) German-American Film Director, husband of Jean Harlow. An extremely rare vintage signed and inscribed 10.5 x 14 photograph of Bern in a profile head and shoulders pose. The moustached director is captured wearing a dark suit. Photograph by Henry Waxman of Hollywood and bearing his blindstamp in the lower right corner. Signed by Bern in fountain pen ink across a dark area of the image and inscribed to Henry Hathaway. Dated in his hand 17th October 1925. Autographs of Bern are extremely rare in any form following his untimely death in mysterious circumstances. A couple of small, minor tears to the edges and very light silvering, about VG Bern married Harlow on 2nd July 1932 and just over two months later, on 5th September, was found naked, shot in the head, at their Beverly Hills home. Although the director's death was considered a suicide, the actual circumstances have always been shrouded in mystery. ALI MUHAMMAD: (1942- ) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion. An excellent, vintage bold blue ink signature, 'From Muhammad Ali, World Champion, 1966', on a white card. A desirable example from a significant year in Ali's career. Two small file holes to the upper edge have been neatly and professionally repaired. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges, VG Ali fought five bouts during 1966 against George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper, Brian London, Karl Mildenberger and Cleveland Williams. He won each of the fights to retain his WBC World Heavyweight Champion title. 1966 was also the year in which Ali refused to serve in the United States Army, declaring himself a conscientious objector, and famously stating 'I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Congs'.

Signed 7.5 x 11 card reproduction of a composite drawing of Dillard in different poses by artist George Loh, signed by Dillard in black ink across a light area, adding the words 'Olympic Champion 1948 & 1952' in his hand beneath his signature. BOLT USAIN: (1986- ) Jamaican Sprinter, the first man to win six Olympic Gold medals in sprinting. A large nylon 60 x 36 Jamaican flag, boldly signed by Bolt in black ink to a clear area at the centre, adding 100 + 200 beneath his signature. VARZI ACHILLE: (1904-1948) Italian Grand Prix Driver. Rare A.L.S., Achille Varzi, one page, oblong 8vo, Galliate, Italy, n.d., to the Automobile Club in Triploi, in Italian. Varzi writes a brief letter, in full, 'Surprised at failing to receive prize after ratification of the Sporting Commission of Palermo. Please provide speedily.' Some very light foxing and minor creasing, about VG Autographs of Varzi are rare following his tragic death at the age of 43 during a practice session for the Swiss Grand Prix when his car crashed and crushed him. As a result of Varzi's death the FIA mandated the wearing of crash helmets during racing, which had been optional previously.
HAWTHORN MIKE: (1929-1959) English Motor Racing Driver, Formula One World Champion 1958. A good vintage signed postcard photograph of Hawthorn driving his Ferrari racing car at speed around a circuit. Signed with his name alone in bold blue fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image. Rare. Some light vertical surface creases at the centre of the image, not affecting the signature, G According to information supplied by the vendor, Hawthorn signed this photograph just three days before his tragically early death in a motor crash.
