* McCartney (Paul). Autograph on plain paper, [December 1967], slight shadowing to initial ‘P’ presumably from starting the ink flow in the ballpoint pen used, paper size 11 x 14cm, light fold marks, together with a small contemporary autograph album containing a handful of authographs of Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams, Alan Bates (adhesion marks to paper edges), Sybil Thorndike (loose piece of paper) and Hugh Paddick, contemp. boards, some wear, small square 8vo. The recipient of these autographs worked at L & H Nathan, theatrical costumiers in Drury Lane. It was while working here that the owner was able to obtain the in-person autograph from Paul McCartney in 1967. (2)

This second edition is most famously the one used as a key source for the plays of William Shakespeare. Due to the politically sensitive nature of a number of passages in this present edition Elizabeth I ordered the Archbishop of Canterbury to recall work with cancelled pages to be found in volumes 2 and 3. These cancelled leaves were reprinted three times in the 18th century, long before Wikileaks could get there. (1)

The English Mathematician Roger Cotes (1682-1716) was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge in 1706 and published the second edition of Principia in 1713. His early death was a great loss to English science, and Newton observed ‘If Mr Cotes had lived, we should have known something’. (1)
