Autograph letter signed “Amy Johnson”, St. David’s Hotel, Harlech, North Wales, 22nd August 1930, to Mrs. Glass on hotel letterhead, “I believe Mother has written to you, but I felt I should like myself to thank you for the great interest you & your two daughters have taken in my flight. For the sweet letters & lovely gifts you have all sent for me, especially for the wonderful roses which arrived looking very fresh. Appreciation like yours means a lot to me because I know it comes from a genuine interest. I should love to meet you all & hope to someday. In the meantime please take newspaper stories with a large grain of salt - from what I can see, they talk some awful rot & grossly exaggerate”, some light spotting, one page, 8vo. Amy Johnson had recently achieved worldwide recognition when she became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia. Flying her “Jason” she left Croydon on the 5th May and landed in Darwin, Australia on the 24th May. Mrs. Glass’s two daughters, Mabel and Sheila, both became aviators in the 1930s, becoming known as the “Middlesex Flying Sisters”. (1)
* Sedgwick (Adam, 1785-1873). Three autograph letters signed “A. Sedgwick”, Cambridge, 1867-68, two addressed to Dean and one to Augusta, written on his 83rd birthday, “I first saw the light on the 22nd of March 1785 - it was a day of howling tempest & driving snow ... & the surgeon who attended my mama very nearly lost his life while forcing his way through the snowdrifts”, the first two letters referring to Christianity, the Chapter, and a visit to Norwich, a total of 9 pp., some album adhesion marks and one small tear to upper margin of a letter to Dean with loss affecting three lines of second page, all 8vo, plus a carte de visite albumen print of Sedgwick by Ernest Edwards, old adhesion remains to verso. While an influence on the young Charles Darwin in his early study of geology, Sedgwick remained an outspoken of Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection. (4)
