Late 18th Century English School - Oil on canvas - Portrait of a young woman, perhaps an actress, grieving over her lost love, unsigned, 75cm x 62cm This half length portrait shows a young woman 'in character', that is the painting has a literary theme. She holds a bundle of letters, presumably love letters, her brow is furrowed and she is shown crying. Her costume is simple and she is probably a country girl. She is outside, her hair blowing in the wind, and the ivy on the rock or wall beside her denotes fidelity. She still loves him, but the artist has not told us whether her lover has died or has abandoned her. The literary theme is at present unidentified. The pose is not theatrical and the painting most likely illustrates a novel or poem, Artists could earn money from painting subject pictures for publishers who would employ an engraver to reproduce them. There is an intimacy in the portrait which suggests the artist was painting a close family member rather than a model. He might also have been demonstrating to potential clients that not only could he capture a good likeness but he could also convey emotion. Although the sitter bears a resemblance to the young Sarah Siddons, the celebrated tragic actress, it is well-documented that Siddons had dark brown eyes and eyebrows. This young woman has blue eyes and light brows Condition: Old relining, large dried-out 'damp' patch to verso, see image, this is clearly been through a workshop at some point in its history probably many years ago so there are some areas that clearly inpainted, craquelure across the whole picture - **General condition consistent with age
