That gap would be filled first by the 900SS that arrived in 1991, reviving one of the great model designations from the Bologna factory's past. The newcomer used a development of Ducati's long running 'belt drive' v-twin motor, designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni, that had first appeared in 1978 in the Pantah 500. Air-cooled and with two-valves-per-cylinder, the 80bhp 900SS was simpler, easier to maintain and, of course, less costly than the 851 Superbike. In style though, it gave nothing away to its more exotic cousin, having the same distinctive 'trellis' frame, now an established Ducati trademark. Handling was, needless to say, exemplary. 750SS and 600SS versions followed. Relatively light (395lbs) and nimble, and with a maximum power output of 60bhp, the 750SS was no sluggard, boasting a top speed of more than 124mph. Purchased by the late (third) owner in 2010, this Ducati 750SS currently displays a total of 7,153 kilometres (approximately 4,400 miles) on the odometer and is presented in age-related condition. It is not known when the machine was last used, although the presence of a 2011-expired tax disc may be an indication. Requiring a replacement battery, no attempt has been made to start the Ducati, which will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration, including a major service and change of cam belts, before returning to the road. Accompanying paperwork includes correspondence, a V5C document, expired MoTs, and the original instruction manual and warranty/service booklet (blank). Large-capacity v-twins have been Harley's stock-in trade since the Edwardian era, their various incarnations progressing through countless technological developments that continue to this day. Towards the end of AMF's 1970s stewardship though, the company's future looked less than assured, so the success of the Low Rider was all the more welcome. Styled by Willie G Davidson and introduced for 1977, the Low Rider was the latest in the FX custom/cruiser line that had commenced in 1971 with the Super Glide. But whereas the latter was positioned mid-way between the Electra Glide and Sportster, the Low Rider was a bolder statement altogether. Its raked out forks, stepped seat and minimalist looks were clearly a nod in the direction of the chopper movement, which had been restyling Harleys in this manner for decades. Low and mean-looking, the first Low Rider set new standards of 'cool' among production motorcycles that have yet to be surpassed.Offered here is an example of the Low Rider Sport, a variant newly introduced for 1987 that featured improved suspension and a smaller front mudguard. Ten years would elapse before Triumph felt ready to do so, having by then emphatically established its credentials as a builder of thoroughly modern motorcycles rivalling the best from Japan and Europe. Triumph's design brief for the new Bonneville was to emulate the classic style of the late 1960s version while incorporating the best of modern technology in the engine, transmission and running gear. The need to recapture the sound and feel of the original meant that the power unit had to be an air-cooled parallel twin with 360-degree crankshaft, while applying similar criteria to the cycle parts dictated wire-spoked wheels and a twin-shock rear end. At 790cc (initially) the new 8-valve engine was bigger than any preceding Bonneville while a balancer shaft - something the original could have done with - was deemed essential to dampen vibration inherent in the traditional engine architecture. The new Bonneville debuted to critical acclaim at Munich in 2001 and before long the concept had been expanded to include cruiser-style Bonneville America, super-sports Thruxton and various other models such as the T100. Acquired by the late (fourth) owner in July 2009, this Bonneville T100 currently displays a total of only 4,208 miles on the odometer. In the UK, Italian scooters were adopted as favoured transport by the 'Mods', becoming one of the enduring style icons of the 1960s. Predecessor of the Li and TV series, the LD arrived in 125cc form in 1951 and became available with 150cc engine three years later. The LD 150's air-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine produced 6bhp (1.2bhp more than the 125) giving the model a top speed of around 50mph. LD production continued until the end of the 1950s. Believed to be original and unrestored, this LD150 displays 'Lambretta Conessionaire Ltd, Wimbledon' plaques throughout and is fitted with air-intake side panels. 1914 Le Zebre Model CRegistration no. BE 5893Chassis no. 3965Odometer Reading: TBAMoT Expiry: Exempt *Restored over 20 years*Featured in 'The Automobile' magazine*Comes with some spares As the light car introduced motoring to more people numerous manufacturers sprung up to meet that demand, including Le Zebre, which operated from 1911 to 1931. This Model C was restored over 20 years with the intention of being as accurate as possible, leading to the purchase of another model to provide a replacement engine, gearbox and wheels. The body – seasoned ash skinned in sheet steel with new wings, presents very well, as does the yellow and black paint, while the wheels/tyres are reported to be good. Seats were re-trimmed in leathercloth and are said to be excellent and the mahogany dashboard and linoleum floor in very good order. The engine – sourced from the donor car – currently has no oil or water so will require light re-commissioning and the running gear too is said to be good. An electric starter has been fitted. (Mike) Couper had taken part in the 1933 Alpine Trial in his Talbot AW90 he suggested that the factory enter a team of three cars for the 1934 event '... to prove that the AV105 with its 3-litre Roesch-designed engine was still better than anything else in the world... which the public might tend to forget after two years' absence from competition.'No rival manufacturer - including Bentley - could yet approach the Talbot's power output per litre. The Talbot engine was also more robust than those offered by Bentley and Lagonda while the recently-adopted pre-selector gearbox was a significant advantage on Alpine roads. Three new works AV105 'Alpine Racer' Team Talbots were built in the spring of 1934; BGH 21 was allocated to Tom and Elsie ('Bill') Wisdom, BGH 22 to Hugh Eaton and BGH 23 to Mike Couper.All three of Couper's team Talbot 105s finished the gruelling 1934 Alpine Trial in excellent shape and the Talbot and Adler teams were finally judged equal winners of Group II, both teams winning coveted Alpine Cups. Talbot's record of seven official entries in three separate Alpine Trials with not a single mark lost by any car, and the highest possible award won in each event, was unprecedented.After a total of 3,600 miles, Wisdom said '...fuel consumption had averaged 18 mpg and oil 1,700 mpg'. Minimal maintenance was needed en route and '... no car in the world could have given less trouble or performed better ...'. Several successful Brooklands seasons followed - the most significant era in Talbot history.BGH 664 was built in Talbot's Barlby Road factory in March 1934 as AV95 chassis no. 38036 with a 10' wheelbase and delivered un-bodied to Messrs Tozer Kemsley and Millbourn on 23rd April 1934. It is thought that the chassis was exported in this form to Australia and bodied there. After WW2 the car found its way to South Africa and into the well-known Talbot collection of Bryan Smith, who at the time also owned the original 1934 Alpine Team car, BGH 21, purchased by the Wisdoms after the Alpine Trial event. After Smith's death his vehicle collection, including a number of Talbots in various states of repair, was returned to the UK.Around this time, BGH 664's chassis, otherwise identical to that of an AV105, was shortened by 6' to the correct 9'6' wheelbase and re-bodied as an 'Alpine Racer', using dimensions taken from an original car. At some juncture engine no. BA697 from 1935 was fitted, along with an overhauled pre-selector gearbox.More recently, BGH 664 has been comprehensively mechanically restored for the current owner by marque specialist I.S. Polson (bills on file) with half an eye on the Flying Scotsman and other great events. Work included the fitment of a freshly overhauled and well-known engine no. 95AV95 (as installed in BGH 22 for most of the '70's through to the '90's). 1927 Bentley 3-Litre Speed Model Sports Roadster Registration no. JO 377Chassis no. TN1559*Originally a Weymann saloon by Gurney Nutting*Substantially known ownership history*Present ownership since 1998*Recent extensive professional refurbishmentWith characteristic humility 'W O' was constantly amazed by the enthusiasm of later generations for the products of Bentley Motors Limited, and it is testimony to the soundness of his engineering design skills that so many of his products have survived. From the humblest of beginnings in a mews garage off Baker Street, London in 1919 the Bentley rapidly achieved fame as an exciting fast touring car, well able to compete with the best of European and American sports cars in the tough world of motor sport in the 1920s. Bentley's domination at Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930 is legendary, and one can only admire the Herculean efforts of such giants as Woolf Barnato, Jack Dunfee, Tim Birkin and Sammy Davis, consistently wrestling the British Racing Green sports cars to victory. W O Bentley proudly unveiled the new 3-litre car bearing his name on Stand 126 at the 1919 Olympia Motor Exhibition, the prototype engine having fired up for the first time just a few weeks earlier. Bentley's four-cylinder 'fixed head' engine incorporated a single overhead camshaft, four-valves per cylinder and a bore/stroke of 80x149mm. Twin ML magnetos provided the ignition and power was transmitted via a four-speed gearbox with right-hand change. The pressed-steel chassis started off with a wheelbase of 9' 9½' then adopted dimensions of 10' 10' ('Standard Long') in 1923, the shorter frame being reserved for the TT Replica and subsequent Speed Model. Rear wheel brakes only were employed up to 1924 when four-wheel Perrot-type brakes were introduced.In only mildly developed form, this was the model that was to become a legend in motor racing history and which, with its leather-strapped bonnet, classical radiator design and British Racing Green livery, has become the archetypal Vintage sports car. Early success in the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, when Bentleys finished second, fourth, and fifth to take the Team Prize, led to the introduction of the TT Replica (later known as the Speed Model) on the existing 9' 9½' wheelbase, short standard chassis. Identified by the Red Label on its radiator, the Speed Model differed by having twin SU 'sloper' carburettors, a higher compression ratio, different camshaft and the close-ratio A-type gearbox, the latter being standard equipment prior to 1927 when the C-type 'box was adopted. These engine changes increased maximum power from the standard 70 to 80bhp and raised top speed to an impressive 90mph. Other enhancements included the larger (11-gallon) fuel tank and (usually) André Hartford shock absorbers. Bentley made approximately 1,600 3-Litre models, the majority of which was bodied by Vanden Plas with either open tourer or saloon coachwork.According to leading marque authority Dr Clare Hay's definitive work, Bentley: The Vintage Years, chassis number 'TN1559' was completed in January 1927 and left the factory fitted with engine number '1566'. Originally bodied by Gurney Nutting as a Weymann-type saloon and first registered 'YE 1140', the Bentley was first owned by Captain W G Horne. The rest of its history prior to WW2 is uncertain, but at the war's end the car was purchased from Roy's in Kenilworth by a Mr Lloyd, who owned a metalworking business in nearby Leamington Spa. It was claimed that the owner previous to Mr Lloyd had been one of the late Sir Henry Segrave's mechanics and that he intended to race the car. He had removed the original saloon body, which was not included in the sale. Very nicely done, the current lightweight two-seater body dates from the immediately post-war period and was built by the car's then owner. In the ensuing years the Bentley passed into the ownership of Tony Judd, who raced it, destroying the original engine when it threw a rod. The engine was replaced with the current unit (number '343') which dates from 1923. Tony sold the Bentley through Stanley Mann Racing to Mr David Jenkins. David Jenkins lived near Cardiff and enjoyed owning the car for around four years. He also owned a Tiger Moth, which he flew from Rhys airfield, and lost his life as the result of a flying accident. During his ownership David Jenkins twice drove the Bentley to Le Mans with his wife to witness the 24-hour race. The current vendor bought the car, via a broker, from his widow in May 1998.During the vendor's early ownership he too drove the Bentley to Le Mans to watch the 24-hour race (in 2000 and 2001) and also drove it to Bruges, Belgium on a private tour with a group of 12 Bentleys. At the lunch stop, Jimmy Medcalf stated that the car had been travelling at a respectable 70-75mph on the motorway, while his brother Bill Medcalf, another Bentley Drivers' Club stalwart, remarked on how pretty it is. The only major mechanical work carried out concerns the crankshaft bearings, which have been re-white-metalled by renowned engineer, Arthur Archer of Great Dunmow. The body and chassis, though, have recently undergone extensive renovation by SJD Classic Restorations (Steve Downs) of Southminster, Essex. SJD disassembled the entire car, removing all bodywork from the chassis and stripping it of all mechanical components. The chassis and axle assemblies were then sand-blasted, prepared, primed and repainted. The aluminium body panels were removed from the timber frame and any rotten elements replaced. All bodywork was stripped back to bare metal and any damaged or corroded sections cut out and replaced with new aluminium. All panelling edges were replaced and the body tub skin refitted to the repaired frame. The wings, bonnet and scuttle were similarly repaired with new metal, as were the dickey seat lids, following which all bodywork was prepared, primed and repainted prior to refitting to the chassis. Other works carried out included repairing the wiring loom; fitting new shock absorbers and wheels; and re-plating the nickel brightwork, repairing it as necessary. Dated October 2019, SJD's invoice for £43,602 is on file. According to the vendor: 'The car has bags and bags of charisma and is a great joy to drive. It goes fast thanks to the lightweight body and stops quickly as well! In its current condition it has been described as 'resplendent''. 'TN1559' has also featured in four editions of the BDC Review (details available). Popularity was assured and it sold across the world, coachwork of all forms being supplied by numerous companies. This 40/50 Phantom II Continental is fitted with H.J. Mulliner sports saloon bodywork in black with vinyl roof and sunroof, with two spare wheels mounted at the back. First owner Sir W.H. Peat, C.B.E. kept the car until 1959 and a year later the engine and gearbox were overhauled: in 1962 the coachwork was overhauled and in 1965 it was awarded the 'most elegant car of all' award at the 1965 Rolls-Royce and Bentley Concours d'Elegance, held at Blenheim Palace. 1961 Jaguar Mk 2 3.8-Litre Sports SaloonRegistration no. The car's first owner was Robert Day Film Production Ltd of London SW14.In December 1976, the car passed into the ownership of Cyril Humphries of Essex and by this time had been repainted Carmen Red. The Jaguar had three further owners, all in Essex, and in January 1996 was inspected by Cartwrights, being described as in first class condition, only requiring a handful of minor works to bring it to concours standard. It was then sold to Bespokes Classic Car Hire Ltd of Watford. In May 2001 a replacement engine (number 'ZA2643-8') was sourced from VSE and fitted, and in October 2004 the car was acquired from West Barn Classic Ltd by the Classic Car Club of London N1. The current vendor bought 'LFF 810' from Epping Motor Company in February 2007.Since then the Jaguar has been extensively campaigned and enjoyed, as detailed in the vendor's fascinating personal log of all activities, maintenance work, expenditure and mileage totals (perusal recommended). Events attended and venues visited include the Goodwood Revival; Norwich Union Run; Circuit de Reims; Circuit Paul Armagnac, Nogaro; Circuit des Ramparts, Angoulême; Beaulieu Autoumble; and Brooklands. The car's most recent adventure involved an extended tour of France in September/October 2018, during which it covered 1,835 miles in three weeks with no problems apart from a couple of easily fixed fluid leaks. The aforementioned log shows that 'LFF 810' has been maintained with no expense spared while in the vendor's long-term stewardship. Major works undertaken include an engine overhaul by marque specialist Alan Collins in the winter 2011/2012, and overhaul of the suspension, brakes, and steering by JD Classics in August 2014. JD Classics also fitted a pair of refurbished 2' SU HD8 carburettors, replacing the standard (and worn) 1¾' items, together with a suitably modified inlet manifold. In April 2016 extensive bodywork repairs and full re-spray were carried out by Splined Hub; bonnet louvres were cut at the same time, and the interior woodwork re-lacquered and veneer on dashboard panels replaced. Slimmer windscreen pillars and deeper side windows greatly enlarged the Mark 2's glass area, and the deletion of its predecessor's full-sized rear wheel spats allowed the rear track to be widened, a move which increased roll resistance and stability. Otherwise, the running gear remained much the same as before, with independent front suspension by wishbones and coil springs, leaf-sprung live rear axle, and Dunlop servo-assisted disc brakes (optional at first on the Mark 1 but standard from November 1957) on all four wheels. A redesigned dashboard with speedometer and rev-counter ahead of the driver and minor gauges grouped centrally established Jaguar's layout for years to come. With the Mark 2's arrival, the 3.8-litre version of Jaguar's XK 'six' became available for the first time in the company's medium-sized saloon. This engine, used previously in the Mark IX saloon, produced 220bhp at 5,500rpm, an output sufficient to propel the top-of-the-range Mark 2 to 125mph. Transmission options were a four-speed manual (with or without overdrive) or Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, an improved all-synchromesh version of the former being specified from 1965.The superb example offered here has been restored and rebuilt in the style of the racing Mark 2 saloons prepared and entered by Guildford-based Jaguar dealer John Coombs in the early 1960s. A Jaguar/Daimler dating letter on file reveals that chassis number '233517' was originally finished in dark blue with light blue trim (the same as it is today) and was retailed via Henlys. The Jaguar retains its original registration number, 'HPA 700C'.This car's history is not known prior to 1989 when it was acquired by Mr Ongun of London, to whom the aforementioned letter was addressed. Next owner Mr Vann acquired 'HPA 300C' in 1992 and it was he that commissioned its restoration. The no-expense-spared rebuild was commenced by marque specialists Three Point Four and completed in November 1997 by Scott-Moncrieff (see bills and photographs on file). The car was subsequently re-trimmed by renowned experts Suffolk & Turley. Its specification includes a rebuilt, balanced, and tuned engine; 2' SU carburettors on matching manifolds; front anti-roll bar; Koni shock absorbers; up-rated coil springs to the front suspension; Coombs-type rear wheelarches; Coombs-type chromed wire wheels; Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering wheel; Pioneer stereo system; and discreet period-style circular mirrors to the window frames.The Jaguar remained with Mr Vann for the next 20-or-so years before being sold to the current vendor, a prominent private collector, by which time it had covered only some 8,000 miles since the restoration and was still in 'exemplary condition'. At the heart of any Elan is its engine and notes report that it was re-built at 40,000 miles with a +0.030 overbore while at 55,000 miles later the pistons and bearings were removed and inspected. The car has an auxiliary electric cooling fan fitted. An exchange gearbox was fitted at 50,000 miles along with a replacement clutch and rear wheel bearings at 68,000 miles. A hard top is available, plus the soft top and tonneau cover. There is a workshop manual and almost complete run of Lotus Club magazines and comprehensive notes from the present owner's files. The Edsel marque was conceived to fit between Mercury and Lincoln models by using Ford and Mercury bodyshells with dedicated Edsel front and rear sections. The 1958 model line-up comprised, in ascending order, Ranger, Pace, Corsair and Citation models. After 1958 the model range was slimmed-down and the last-gasp 1960 models used full-sized Ford bodyshells with trim and badging differences. This 1959 Ranger is powered by a Y-block V8, here in smaller 292 cubic inch (4.8-litre) form, with two-speed Mile-O-Matic transmission and was built on 10 December 1958 at the Lousville plant, painted Gold Metallic and Snow White with two-tone Green vinyl and Signet cloth trim. The bodywork is in average condition and the paint is poor, and it should be noted the bumpers have been painted. The green and light gold interior is generally good and the dashboard is also good. The engine is said to be poor for starting and running and the underbonnet presentation is average: running gear is reported to be in poor order.Rare in its homeland this 1959 Ranger requires attention but would make a thoroughly worthwhile project.
