Lot 3

A COMMONWEALTH SILVER SALVER ON FOOT POSSIBLY ROBERT GREGORY, LONDON 1658 The broad flange embossed with trailing flowers, massed fruit and birds, the centre engraved 'Legatum Sororis' over GF and an armorial, on a plain conical foot, faintly engraved beneath the foot 'Sister 1666' 37.5cm (14 1/2in) diameter 1145g (36.8 oz)See Mitchell p 613 to 615 for a brief biography, illustrations of his marks and a photograph of a broadly similar footed salver by Gregory of 1660 owned by the Goldsmiths Company. The birds comprise: a swan, an eagle displayed, a peacock and a turkey from the relatively new American colonies.A very early example of heraldic engraving. The hatching is a little misleading but the monogram of GF is important in any identification. The Latin phrase is not a motto but a statement of "a benefit in memory of". The blazon of arms: (lozenge) azure, a bend engrailed argent cottised or. Phrase: LEGATUM SORORIS (legacy of a sister). Initials: GFThe arms are for Grace MANNERS (1565-1634) daughter of John MANNERS of Nether Haddon, Derbyshire who married in 1596 Francis FORTESCUE (1573-1623) son of Sir John FORTESCUE (1531-1607) of Salden Hill, Buckinghamshire by Cicely ASHFIELD (1536-1571) daughter Sir Edmund ASHFIELD (1503-1578).We can find no descendant of Grace FORTESCUE who died in 1634, sometime before the date of assay (1658), whose initials were GF. This seems to confirm that the arms are presented as a family memorial to a 'sister' by a brother or other family member. The tinctures indicated in the engraving are undefined and almost random artistic attempts to 'fill a space'. Condition Report: Overall in good order, marks clear, standard to foot chasing good some rubbing to high points, maybe a dent to a large apple, slight wobbles in rim area, engraving crisp, scratches and nicks commensurate with age and light use, sits well, no splits or repairsCondition Report Disclaimer

JACQUELINE RYAN, STICKLETS, A LAPIS LAZULI AND GOLD COLOURED NECKLACE CIRCA 1998The interlocking 'Sticklet' links each with a lapis lazuli tip, faint inscription J. RYAN 1998Size/dimensions: 72cm longGross weight: 51 grams Provenance: from the collection of Victoria, Lady de Rothschild 'Most of my pieces are preceded by studies derived from living organisms, marine plants, flowers, or seeds and other found objects with the occasional aid of macrophotography that capture some of the finer-scale qualities more difficult to perceive with the naked eye. Repetition, naturally occurring in nature, is a recurrent theme that runs through much of my work as well as movement in which the composite shapes and forms from which my work is constructed move and sway with the body and sometimes jingle and rattle - quietly giving the work a pleasant tactile dimension and interacting with the wearer so that the piece may be animated and alive. I feel that my work has completed its cycle when it has found its wearer.' The mark 152PG refers to the workshop that Jacqueline shared with Giovanni Corvaja in Perugia. Neither of them were required to have an additional, individual maker's identification mark besides that of the premises because they were officially a working partnership in Padova, and then in the Perugia area until 2005 (Corvaja & Ryan Snc). When Giovanni moved to a larger premises not far from the original workshop, Jacqueline purchased Giovanni's half of the premises and it became an individual business. They used to sign their own individual works by hand so technically both their works made before 2001 carried the Padova identification mark, thereafter 152PG until 2005 when the partnership was dissolved. Jacqueline Ryan retained the 152PG identification which she still uses to this day. Condition Report: The necklace is missing a clasp which should have had the Italian mark, but Jacqueline Ryan has confirmed the piece was indeed designed and made by her. Some light scuffs and scratches to all the lapis lazuli, but only visible on very close inspection. The necklace has overall light signs of use. All lapis lazuli appears to be present.Faint signature on a barrel connector J.RYAN 1998Believed to have been purchased from the Scottish Gallery in 2006.  Condition Report Disclaimer
