A MASSIVE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE CENSER, SHISOU MARKChina, 17th-18th century. The heavily cast bombe body supported on a spreading foot and rising to a slightly everted rim, the shoulder set with two loop handles, the exterior finely inlaid in silver wire with sinuously coiled dragons dividing capitals in the form of lotus flowers reminiscent of the Old Summer Palace (yuanmingyuan). The base with a silver-inlaid two-character Shisou mark.Provenance: The Mee-Din and Robert W. Moore Collection. Robert W. Moore is a famed California collector of Chinese and Korean art, whose passion began in the 1950s when he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. After his return to the United States, he began collecting Korean and later also Chinese works of art, and over the following decades became a very knowledgeable, discerning, and influential collector.Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, light scratches, the interior with extensive traces of use. Magnificent, natural patina overall.Weight: 2,903 g Dimensions: Width 26.7 cm (across handles)Little is known about the historic figure Shisou. The earliest reference in the Zhongguo meishujia renming cidian ('Dictionary of Chinese Artists') comes from the Luochuang xiaodu and is presumably from the same source as published in Zhongguo yishujia zhenglue ('Brief Introduction of Chinese Artists). Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity').Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 6 October 2015, lot 171Price: HKD 62,500 or approx. A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE LINGBI SCHOLAR'S ROCK, QING DYNASTYExpert's note: Ranked first among the four types of famous Chinese Scholar's Rocks, Lingbi are mostly carved from calcite and other ancient types of limestone. They originate from Lingbi county in Anhui Province and are fine-grained and delicately textured, found lying deep in the red mud of the Qingshi mountains. Naturally shaped, they need almost no cutting or carving. Depleted after generations of mining, high-quality Lingbi are now very rare. Their mineral composition is such that they produce a metallic, distinct sound when tapped. Hence they are also called 'resonant rocks' (bayinshi). Combining masculine beauty with antique simplicity, Lingbi have been admired by connoisseurs for centuries. In the Northern Song dynasty, Emperor Huizong wrote about a Lingbi in his collection: “The mountain is high while the moon looks small, the water ebbs and the rock juts forth.” China, 1644-1912. The perforated vertical rock is evocative of the sinuous body of a dragon, with protrusions and deep crevasses as well as reticulation. The porous stone is of a distinct dark gray tone with russet patches, suffused by white veins.Provenance: From a noted estate in Chicago, Illinois, USA. A RARE 'PHOENIX' BRONZE MIRROR, SONG DYNASTYChina, 960-1279. Of circular form, the central knob (or tang) surrounded by a petal shaped border with low bosses, encircled by a pair of phoenixes neatly cast in thread relief below the outer rim.Provenance: Collection of Dr. Walter Rieder (1890-1986), thence by descent. Old inventory labels to the mirror and box. A copy of an old handwritten note from Dr. Walter Rieder, dating the piece to the Song dynasty and describing the birds as two phoenixes, accompanies this lot. Dr. Walter Rieder served in the Swiss East Asia Mission (SOAM) in Qingdao, Shandong Province, between October 1930 and December 1951. The mission specialized in educational, literary, and philanthropic work and Dr. Rieder was in fact, not a theologian or missionary, but a teacher of mathematics, physics, and science to high school students attached to the SOAM. His guiding principles were 'Creating understanding between different cultures' and 'Building bridges between East and West'. While in Qingdao, Dr. Rieder collected a wide variety of Chinese art. The objects in the collection thus offer a unique window into the type of antiques that were on the market in Qingdao in the second quarter of the 20th century. As well as demonstrating his passion for Chinese art, his collection also reveals the personal friendships Dr. Rieder forged with local artists, some of whom he knew from his teaching activities. Dr. Rieder had a scholarly approach to studying his collection. Alongside many of his objects, meticulous notes can sometimes be found detailing his art historical commentaries. The collection was hence Dr. Rieder's gateway to the history and culture of China. Objects from the collection were exhibited at the Kunsthaus in Interlaken, Switzerland in 2006 and 2018. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, presenting exceptionally well. Few nicks, minor losses, light surface scratches. Fine, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustation.Weight: 212.5 g Dimensions: Diameter 14.7 cmWith an old silk storage box. Sometime during the Song dynasty, a compass would also be added to the sundial. There is an early reference to sundials from 104 BC, found in an assembly of calendar experts. However, equatorial and polar sundials, as commonly found in Europe and Arabia, did not exist in China until the late Ming dynasty, when Catholic missionaries introduced them to Chinese astronomers.Literature comparison: Compare a wood sundial compass, dated possibly 18th century, in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, accession number 1957-165-12, and another dated 1850-1900 in the Horniman Museum & Gardens, London, museum number 6.12.65/265, and an ivory compass and sundial, dated to the 19th century, at Christie's New York, 17 October 2000, lot 41.This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. (2)Expert's note: Vases such as the present lot have their origins in the archaic ritual vessel called Hu, but in their size and slightly exaggerated form they predominantly served to proclaim the advanced skills and sophisticated techniques of mid-Qing Dynasty porcelain manufacture. The lotus scroll also has its distant origins dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, but by the Qianlong period it had become the very formal, evenly-spaced pattern with its self-conscious echo of a past long bygone. It is this very structure, however, that helps today's scholars to establish a precise dating for any vase from this group: The more dense the lotus pattern is, the later the piece. The present lot, however, is a bit of a riddle, as its lotus scrolls reside more or less exactly between the sparse, almost frugal 'Ming Style' patterns from the early Qianlong period and the dense, almost cluttered scrolls from the late Qing and Minguo periods. Same goes for the rich cobalt-blue tones: Not quite as brilliant and intensive as in the early Qianlong era, but also by far not as dull and feeble as in later times. For these reasons, it is this author's belief that the present lot is either from the second half of the Qianlong period, or from the first half of the 19th century.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related blue and white hu, with a Qianlong six-character seal mark and of the period, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 24 September 1987, lot 74, offered again at Christie's Hong Kong, 26 April 2004, lot 1065.
