° ° Graves, Ada, J - The House by the Railway, first edition, illustrated by Rosa C. Petherick, 8vo, original pictorial boards, ink ownership inscription on front free endpapers, light marginal toning, loss to spine head, extremities rubbed and chipped, The National Sunday School, London, [1896]. Extremely scarce. Note: In 2011, it was claimed that significant sections of E Nesbit's novel ‘’The Railway Children’’, may have been plagiarised from Ada J. Graves's ‘’The House by the Railway’’, which was published in 1896. Ada Graves’s granddaughter claimed that a pivotal scene of children preventing a train crash was taken directly from her grandmother's work, published nine years earlier. In "The House by the Railway," middle-class children from the suburbs move to the countryside with their mother, mirroring the storyline of Bobbie and her siblings, and stop a train from crashing by waving a red jacket. Similarly, they are awarded engraved watches for their bravery. Additional parallels link the two novels, including an episode where a person the children meet on a train has a connection to another character in the story, and both books conclude with an emotional family reunion.

Spotty Horse: An original, signed and framed Watercolour Painting Donated by: The Artist - Madeleine de St. Pierre Bunbury Madeleine has adored horses all her life, and this love lends an emotional, passionate quality to each of her equestrian works of art. Born on Mustique Island in 1995, Madeleine was educated in Dorset before training in traditional portraiture for three years at the renowned Charles Cecil Studios in Florence. It was here that she learned the traditional “sight size” technique and painting from life under natural light. Each year, in between travelling the globe painting life-size commissions of client’s beloved horses, Madeleine, paints just a small handful of her original Spotty Horse designs. Using the medium of watercolour paint on thick, textured paper, Madeleine finishes these in beautiful hand-crafted frames made locally to her in Wiltshire. This particular piece’s frame’s colourway is a most appealing metallic gold and duck egg blue combination, which perfectly sets off the egg yolk yellow plumed horse (yellow is well known to be Madeleine’s favourite colour!). This is such a happy, vibrant and highly decorative piece of art, expertly framed and bound to be the most wonderful gift for any friend or family member, or even to self!
