Wilde (Oscar) Ballade de la Geole de Reading, first edition in French, translated by Henry-D. Davray, parallel text in English and French, half-titles, two ff. publisher's advertisements to rear, ink library stamps to title and several ff., some light finger soiling, splitting to gutter at p.12, 36 and upper hinge, but stitching firm, contemporary morocco-backed boards, wear to extremities, 8vo, Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1898. ⁂ This first French edition revealed Wilde as the poem's author, the original English having been published anonymously under the pseudonym "C.3.3", which was Wilde's cell number during his time as an inmate in Reading gaol. Upon his release in May 1897, Wilde went into exile in France near Dieppe, never to return to England, and composed this poetic work based on his experiences.
