20TH CENTURY CONTINENTAL SCHOOL "Street scene with horse and cart, stalls, and figure on a donkey before whitewashed buildings in a sunlit tree lined scape", oil on canvas, indistinctly signed and dated '59 lower right, 41 cm x 51.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Picture is very slightly yellowed but this is quite even, under UV light does not show any obvious signs of restoration and sits solidly in frame. Frame has some even cracking throughout from general heat and wear, with some minor knocks and bumps, but overall appears reasonably sound.

HOBDAY HORSLEY (1807-1890) "View of Ponte San Pietro, Near Porlezza, North Italy", study of figures washing beside a river before a bridge and cottage, in a mountainous ravine, oil on canvas, signed and inscribed verso to the stretcher, 71 cm x 92 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light there is an area of restoration with a hole to the top left corner approx. 5 cm x 3 cm, another area of restoration bottom left corner approx. 3 cm x 2 cm, right in the centre of the picture there is a large circular "splodge" of restoration just above the bridge approx. 5 cm x 6 cm, and on the reverse side the central circular area of restoration has been patched from the back so there was clearly a hole in this area at some point, has clearly had some very old restoration where the back has been re-glued to try and stabilise it however it is still quite loose, there is a little bit of touching up to the bridge, and some other minor areas of touching up throughout, there is a deep scratch on the top right corner approx. 1 cm x 1 cm, some crazing to the oil mainly visible in the light areas of the skyline, back frame has caused quite a solid crack in the paint along the top of the stretcher from the front, there is a hole where the paint is flaking to the top left corner where the picture has been restored in the past. Would benefit greatly from a good clean and some sympathetic restoration throughout. Frame has some knocks, particularly a pinhead size knocks to left-hand side, some other general wear and some crazing generally, corners have knocks and bumps.
GUIDO ODIERNA (1913-1991) "Seascape with waves crashing upon rocks", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 51 cm x 71 cm CONDITION REPORTS Picture appears slightly yellowedi in colour and would benefit from a clean. Under UV light - does not show any obvious signs of restoration. Is in modern frame with some knocks and bumps particularly to the corners and along the edges.
GUSTAVE DE BREANSKI (c. 1856-1898) "At the Harbour Mouth", rowing boat with two figures beside the harbour wall, sailing boats and white cliffs beyond", oil on canvas, 61 cm x 91 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light : picture does not show any obvious signs of restoration, is very slightly yellowed in colour and would benefit from a clean. In gilt frame with knocks and bumps to corners and edges throughout, and cracking to the outer decoration, there are at least two sections of the gilding missing along the top edge at least 5 cm long each (please see photos).
19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL "View from Hampton Court Bridge", study of figures in rowing boats and punts in a river landscape, oil on board, inscribed lower left, 15 cm x 24.5 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light the picture shows a couple of spots of restoration to the skyline and some slight re-painting down the left-hand side where the picture has clearly rubbed under the previous mount, and similarly on the right-hand side, Has clearly been cleaned in the past. There are one or two slight pinhead sized knocks to the skyline on the right-hand side. Is slightly dirty and would benefit from sympathetic clean. In a reasonably modern frame which appears to have been re-gilded in the past.
WILLIAM LANGLEY (1852-1922) "Beach seascape with gulls in flight", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 51 cm x 76 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light : picture shows no obvious signs of restoration. Is slighlty yellowed in colour and would benefit from a clean, is slightly loose in frame, and shows slight rubbing to oil where it is against the outer back frame. Frame has some general wear, slight rubbing/knocks to corners and edges conducive with general wear.
DUTCH SCHOOL "Estuary scene with rowing boats, sailing boats, figures and windmill", oil on canvas, unsigned, 76 cm x 102 cm CONDITION REPORTS Under UV light the picture does not show any obvious signs of restoration, appears tight in frame, may possibly have had some sympathetic cleaning and re-stretchering in the past, but overall appears to be in sound condition, but very slightly dirty towards the top of the picture. Frame is particularly knocked and bumped on the corners, on the right-hand side there is an area approx. 8 cm x 2 cm and 1 cm x 1 cm of gilding missing, on the left-hand side the gilding above the three screws is missing, on the right-hand side bottom corner there is a large amount of cracking by the leaf decoration right down to the corner, the two lower corners have gilding missing by the screws and there are some other general knocks to the gilding throughout, top right corner at front has had some old but quite unsuccessful restoration to the gilding (please see photos), top right leaf decoration is missing approx. a third of the gilding, left-hand front is similar, overall frame requires some sympathetic restoration.

* Skis. A pair of early 20th-century light pine skis designed by Marius Eriksen, each 208 cm (81.75 ins) stamped at fore-end ‘Marius Eriksen Patents’ additionally stamped ‘210 3781’, the steel boot bracket stamped ‘Thorleif Haugs Patent Sinning Made in Norway’ the composite foot plate stamped ‘Marius-Ski’, with a pair of bamboo ski poles, each with steel spike and baboo star, stitched leather grips with loops, 139 cm (54.75 ins) overall. Marius Eriksen (1922-2009) was a Norwegian skier, fighter pilot, model and actor. Born in Oslo, he served with the RAF during WWII, and is credited with nine kills, making him one of Norway’s top fighter aces. He was shot down in 1943 and taken to Stalag Luft III POW Camp, where he remained until Liberation in 1945. After the war he became the Norwegian Alpine skiing champion in both 1947 and 1948. Thorleif Haug (1894-1934) was considered the world’s best skier in the 1920s, winning three gold medals in his first Winter Olympic Games. (4)

Published to raise money for the “Surprise View” appeal fund, formed to save 245 acres near Hathersage from development. Since long ages past gamekeepers representing the landed gentry, who own vast tracts of mountain and moorland for grouse shooting, have preserved their fiefdom using both cudgels and guns as and when necessary. Only one footpath from Hayfield up Williams Clough brought ramblers close to the forbidden Kinder Scout. After the 1932 Mass Kinder Trespass, Benny Rothman and friends were sentenced to prison after being found guilty by a Jury comprising two brigadier-generals, three colonels, two majors, three captains and two aldermen. Not until 1958 was access obtained to Bleaklow and Kinder. Phil Barnes book ‘Trespassers will be Prosecuted’ was produced to highlight some of the forbidden Peak District areas for the frustrated working class people of Sheffield and Manchester. Produced in small numbers most have been lost and only very rarely does a fine copy come to light. (8)
