*Maggi Hambling (b.1945) oil on canvas - 'The Hangover', signed and dated 1976 verso, 53cm x 43cm, framedAndrew Lambirth, author of Maggi Hambling: The Works (2006), writes:This portrait, of Maggi's friend the artist Mark Wickham, is a typical example of her early style, when she was painting such masterpieces as the boxer Charlie Abrew(Wakefield Art Gallery), her neighbour Frances Rose, and the first portraits of her mentor, Lett Haines. Hambling and Wickham were both teaching at Morley College at the time, and Mark was in a low state due to the complications of a love affair. He unburdened himself to Maggi over a bottle of whisky, to such an extent that his Morley class had to be cancelled, and Hambling painted this moving portrait the next day. Basically good condition although there are areas of slight cracking - as seen in the images. All appear stable. There are stretcher marks more visible on the top edge and sides, although not to the detriment of the work, in our opinion. It would probably benifit from a light clean.
