Grech, 1833. 2 vols, 8° (206 x 125mm and 211 x 129mm). Lithographed frontispieces. (Light spotting and light soiling.) In contrasting half calf and full calf bindings, vol. 1 spine gilt (spine ends chipped, extremities rubbed, sides scuffed). Provenance: 20th-century Russian booksellers (various stamps; vol. 2 with Mogiz book-ticket). FIRST EDITION. Born in Ireland and educated in America, Dobell ultimately settled on Russian citizenship. Dobell identified the Philippines as a key base from which to organize the regular supply of provisions to the Russian Far East and suggested the idea to the Russian government, sending at his own cost three ships from Manila to Kamchatka. Alexander I approved the plan and appointed Dobell Consul General of Russia's first mission in Manila. Dobell made three trips to China, where he lived for seven years. This work is based in part on his Travels in Kamtchatka and Siberia, published in London in 1830, but adds seven chapters and appendices. A French translation was published in 1838. Cordier 2109. FIRST EDITION OF RIKORD'S EXPEDITION TO RESCUE GOLOVNIN. It constitutes an important and early first-hand account of contact between Japan and Russia. Rikord sailed to Japan on the Russian sloop-of-war Diana, taking on board a number of Japanese seamen shipwrecked off the coast of Kamchatka, and capturing Takadaya-Kahei and several crew from a large junk. He landed at Kunashie where he negotiated the eventual release of Golovnin, averting war with Japan. Golovnin later wrote a popular account of the experiences; both accounts were translated for an English edition in 1818. Provenance: a Russian reader (light pencilled marginalia). FIRST EDITION IN RUSSIAN, AND AMONG THE RAREST RUSSIAN MASONIC BOOKS.'Extremely rare' (Bitovt); 'a great rarity' (Sopikov). One of only 300 copies, printed on a clandestine press, distributed privately, and the majority of which were confiscated and destroyed. The Grand Lodge of Russia came into being in 1776. Catherine II, whose son and eventual heir was a Mason, feared that the lodges could be used for political purposes, and in 1794 banned all Masonic activity within her realm. A late Victorian silver coffee jug with part oblique fluted body and circular tapered base. Hallmarked Sheffield, 1896, height measures 8 inches (20 cm), gross weight 16 ozt (497.5 grams). Condition: The coffee pot sits flat on its base, the lid wobbles slightly on its hinge, the lid doesn`t quite sit flush, there is very small gap at the front. The wooden handle and finial are in good condition. The hallmarks are rubbed, the hallmark on the lid more so, but they are still clear and legible. The main solder join running down the side of the coffee jug is visible, particularly from the inside of the jug. The detailing is slightly rubbed and there are gathered areas of polish. There are general light surface wear and tear scratches to the pot in keeping with the age and use of the piece.

Edwardian silver dish of circular waisted form, the body vertically pierced with beaded rims and dual wreath and ribbon handles. Hallmarked D & M Davis (David & Maurice Davis) Birmingham 1906. Diameter measuring 6 1/4 inches (16 cm), weight 7.2 ozt (224 grams). Condition: The dish displays light wear commensurate with the age and use with general scratches, marks and some tarnishing. Remnants of old polish visible to the recesses and further spots of discolouration to the inner base. The hallmarks positioned to the underside of the base are clear and legible. There is an area to the base with visible solder, but possibly as made.

Diameter measuring approximately 4 1/2 inches (11.5 cm). (2). Condition: In very good overall condition, a few light scratches and fingerprint marks. The hallmarks are clear and legible. Slight imperfection to the wood on the bulbous example.

A similar pair of modern silver mounted wooden wine coasters, of circular straight sided form with stepped detail. Hallmarked Birmingham 2010, one made by A.J. Poole and the second Lawrence R Watson & Co. Diameter measuring approximately 3 3/4 inches. Condition: Both wine coasters are in very good overall condition, there are light scratches and finger print marks. One has a slight imperfection to the wood, the second does not have a circular silver panel to the inside centre of the wood. Hallmarked in different styles, both in good condition, clear and legible.

A pair of Victorian cased silver plated spoons, the shaped and engraved bowls leading to detailed stems with marquise shaped terminals. Victorian registration mark probably for the 3rd of May 1882. Length measuring 6 1/4 inches (16 cm). Condition: The spoons appear in good overall condition, there are some light general scratches and tarnishing to the spoons, the case also displaying some general wear. The Victorian registration marks, a little distorted, but likely to appear as made.

A cased set of three continental fruit spoons with matching sifter spoon, each with decorative finials with scroll and mask detail, gross combined weight 3.2 ozt (100 grams). Condition: The cased set of three continental fruit spoons and matching sifter spoon have light general surface wear and tear scratches. The sifter spoon stem is slightly bent. The case to the outside is very worn and the clasp is broken, the interior is slightly discoloured and worn, thread bare in a couple of places. The marks are slightly rubbed but clear.

Lot 207

A Russian silver-gilt and cloisonnÚ enamel spoon, stamped with the Kokoshnik mark, the fineness standard of 84 and the assay master mark of Ivan Lebedkin, Moscow (appointed 1899). The bowl with enamel foliate scrolls shaded in blues, greens, pinks and lilac bordered by turquoise beading, leading to a tapered stem with twist detail amongst conforming enamel and shaped terminal. With case. Length measuring 7 3/4 inches (19.5 cm), weight 2.9 ozt (93 grams). Cased. Condition: There are general surface scratches and wear commensurate with the age of the item, especially to the gilded interior and tip of the bowl. There is further light rubbing to the gilded areas, in particular a small abrasion or file mark on the back of the stem near to the bowl (visible in one of the additional photos). Some of the gilded areas in between the enamel sections have blackened a little. The enamel decoration on the back of bowl appears to be in good condition. On close examination there is some light chipping and some pin prick marks. There are further imperfections to the enamel on the stem and finial and to the finial itself (please ask for further photos if required). The Russian marks are a little rubbed but still legible. The wooden case has general scratches and marks and some fraying and discolouration to the material inside.

Lot 217

A white metal continental tea caddy of faceted circular form raised on a conforming base with hinged lid opening to reveal a gilt interior surmounted with a shaped finial. Polish hallmarks indicating its 800 standard and dated early to mid twentieth century. Height measures 4 3/4 inches (12 cm), weight 9.26 ozt (288.1 grams). Condition: The white metal continental tea caddy has light surface wear and tear scratches with some small areas of tarnishing and pitting. There are some nicks to the edges and it wobbles on its base slightly. There are a couple of shallow dints, the most noticeable one to the lid just below the finial. The hinge is in good working order and the lid closes flush. There is some build up of polish in areas. The gilt interior is quite bright.

Condition: The teaspoons appear in good overall condition with light general scratches, marks and tarnishing. The hallmarks are clear and legible. Condition: Considering the age of the set of spoon and sugar nips, they appear in good condition, they do display some general wear with scratches, marks and light tarnishing, there are some more repetitive scratches from being abrasively cleaned. The case also in good condition displaying light wear commensurate with the age and use. The hallmarks are clear and legible.

Two modern silver mounted bottle stoppers, the first surmounted with a gentleman golfer, the second surmounted with a golf bag. Hallmarked A.J. Poole Birmingham 2000 and 2007. Slightly differing in size but measuring approximately 9 cm. Condition: Both bottle stoppers are in very good condition with light scratches and surface finger prints, a little surface tarnishing. The hallmarks are clear and legible.

Lot 318

A small selection of modern silver items to include a small bud vase of tapered form raised on a circular base, hallmarked A J Poole, Birmingham 2001, the height measuring 4 inches (10 cm). Together with a letter opener, napkin ring, port label and pen. (5). Condition: The bud vase and napkin ring are like new, the letter opener has some light surface scratches and the circular end looks to have been repaired and bends slightly. The port label has a small section of deep scratches to the reverse. All pieces are hallmarked A J Poole, Birmingham, dated between 2001 and 2010.

Lot 349

A modern silver pill box of rectangular form with engine turned decoration, opening to reveal a gilt interior. Hallmarked Birmingham 1982 with makers mark PJD, length measures 36 mm. Together with a further modern pill box of square form with engraved acanthus leaf decoration to the lid. Stamped to the base with STERLING 925 and London import marks dated 1979. Gross weight 43 grams. (2). Condition: The two modern pill boxes have general light surface wear and tear scratches. The engine turned pill box is in a better condition out of the two, the lid closes flush, the hidden hinge is in good working order, there are some areas of tarnishing. The gilt interior is in a very good condition. There are corresponding hallmarks to the lid and main body, both are clear and legible. The square pill has some small patches of tarnishing, the hinge is in good working order, the lid does not close quite flush. There are some numbers lightly scratched to the inside of the box. The engraved decoration shows good detail.

Lot 394

Edwardian silver vesta case, the rectangular body with foliate engraving, initial engraving and attached pendant loop. Hallmarked George Randle Birmingham 1901. Height measuring 41 mm. Condition: General wear, surface marks and scratches and nicks in the metal and some small dents. Also some tarnishing, in particular around the loop and hinge. Slightly misshapen as sides slightly indented, where it has been held. Some light rubbing to engraved decoration. Hinge still works well so that it closes tightly. Hallmarks a little rubbed but still very clear.
