Samuel Webley (1877-1956) Begonias, 1938 oil on panel over gilding, mounted on frame unsigned, titled in white conte pencil to reverse, sold with a copy of the original receipt 66 x 47cm (image), 87 x 68.5cm (frame) Provenance Purchased directly from the artist by R H Hutchings, thence by descent. This work is characteristic of Webley's pioneering technique of painting of gilding to provide the vivid iridescence of the ceiling light. This rich Art Deco style of painting led to the commission to decorate the interior of a Marharajah's car, by repute.
‡ Petter Byorn Southall (born 1960) a pair of fumed oak Batten low tables, designed by Petter Southall and made by Petter Southall and Tom March at his I Tre Furniture studio, 2010, sold with a photocopy of the original receipt of purchase, 43cm high, 38cm wide. (2) Provenance Purchased directly from the maker by the vendor, 2010. Catalogue notes These Batten tables show Southall's slatted construction, taking one shape and repeating it - creating a play of light and shadow on the surface of the piece. The pieces of wood are held tightly together using a copper boat rivets (gleaned from his training as a boat builder) which both provide a strength to the piece and also reduce the need for glue. Southall records his first commission, after graduation from Hooke Park College, was from the sculptor Elisabeth Frink for a table and dining chairs in 1991.

(24.75 x 35cm.)* Condition: A little light foxing to sky. Mount burn. Colours good. Not examined out of frame. Good quality modern beaded giltwood frame.

A Chinese blue and white porcelain baluster vase and cover from the Vung Tau cargo, the base painted with an artemesia leaf, the lappet reserves painted with peony jardinieres, divided by floral borders, above a petalled foot and ruyi collar to the shoulder, the upstanding neck with trefoil pendant decoration, the domed cover with lappet, dot and cross decoration, Christies lot label affixed to base, handpainted collection number to base and underside of cover, 7½in. (19cm.) high.* Provenance: Christies Amsterdam, April 1992, Lot 296.** Condition: Good condition. One tiny glaze frit to edge of base. Glaze has some light scratching and matting across the surface, presumably from cleaning post-salvage.
A WMF electro-plated Art Nouveau centre bowl, early 20th century, of twin handled oval form with pierced decoration, raised on four feet with shaped clear glass liner, marked to base with WMF, EP, OX, 1/0, 11½in. (29.2cm.) long.* Condition: In good condition with very light surface scratches to metal, liner very good.
A Japanese red lacquer box, 20th century, of shaped rectangular form, the hinged cover decorated with relief mother-of-pearl figures in a landscape within a shaped reserve, the main with floral sprays, lid underside with 'H Marquis' Paris retailer, signed, 7in. (17.8cm.) long.* Condition: In very good condition, small nicks to edge of base, light rubbing to underside.

A novelty cast brass cigar cutter in the form of a ships telegraph, probably German, early 20th century, 5in. (12.7cm.) high, together with a novelty advertising Craven "A" red tin ink blotter/cigarette box (usable blotter) and a novelty treen smokers compendium in the form of a barrel on a cart. (3) *Condition: one piece missing from compendium, telegraph with light corrosion, tin with light surface wear, overall good.
An early 9ct gold cased Rolex gents wrist watch, c.1920, the engine turned movement signed 'Rolex 15 Jewels Swiss Made', the 21mm. silvered Roman dial within a 25mm. square cushion shaped case stamped 'Rolex W&D 9K 823878 Swiss'; together with another 9ct gents manual wind wrist watch, c.1920, Swiss movement, 28mm. white enamel Roman dial with red XII, 30mm. circular case. (2)* Condition: Rolex winds and runs. The hour hand is broken and partially missing. Dial good, but light deterioration to finish around lumed dots. Wear to bevelled edge of glass. Small ding to bezel. Otherwise case good.Other watch - Winds and runs. Three hairline cracks to dial. Plastic 'glass' yellowed. Hands rusty. Case good with minor tool marks.
A rare Channel Islands silver Hanoverian pattern soup spoon, maker's mark I.G with coronet, struck once (Jean Gruchy, Jersey c. 1729), narrow bowl with flat edge tip, bifurcated shoe piece, inscribed to terminal 'SLB', 7 7/8in. (20cm.) long, weight 1.8 tr.oz. *Condition: in excellent condition, slightly rubbed hallmark, light surface scratches.

Glaze has some light scratching and matting to surface, probably due to post-salvage cleaning.
Two Chinese porcelain snuff bottles, one of flattened, ovoid form, in dark powder blue glaze, 6.8cm. high; the second of Meiping form, in dark brown, satin glaze, with enamelled diaper decoration and domed coral style glass stopper, 6.2cm. high. (2)* Condition: - Blue glazed: Lacks stopper. Some light scratching to glaze.- Meiping: Some wear to top of diaper decoration. Otherwise good.
A pair of cut glass and gilt metal four light candelabra in Louis XV style, 20th century, the cut glass sconces above scrolled foliate arms hung with faceted pendants and beaded chains, issuing from a knopped and baluster stem with two further tiers of scrolled and cut glass hung arms, with cut glass spire finial, on openwork cast base, electrified, 26in. (25.5cm.) diameter, weight 19.4 tr.oz.**Condition: In excellent condition with light surface scratches.
Continental, late 19th century, The Apple Seller oil on canvas, unsigned, in late 19th century Continental frame 25 x 20½in. (63.5 x 52cm.)* Condition: Good overall. Some light retouching, mainly to margins and more notably along lower edge of canvas. Some scratches towards top of head. Relined. A few losses to frame.
An antique Chinese watercolour on silk of a bird, probably 19th century, the white feathered bird perched upon a peony branch, signed with four red seal marks and inscribed with black calligraphy, lined black border, 25½ x 16 3/8in. (64.75 x 41.5cm.), in a modern giltwood frame with bevelled mount. *Condition: Colours bright. Some sooty dirty marks and small scuffs visible to silk and it has been rolled at some time - it is a little cockled and there are some small vertical crease marks and some light horizontal crease marks to the centre areas from that rolling. A line of spot spill marks visible at a diagonal across the upper third of the painting - there are signs that an attempt has been made to restore these at some time, leaving feint, slightly darker-than-background marks around the spot marks. Two small patches of damage to the surface of the silk at lower centre right margin and a few dirty marks to silk at lower right corner.
A 19th century 15ct gold and ruby ring, the seven cushion cut rubies within millegrain borders, ring size P.* Condition: Shank has been sized and is a little mis-shapen. All of the stones have light wear to table and facets. The outer two stones - one has a few small frits and the other has three tiny chips to inner edge. Both have heavier wear to facets.
A novelty champagne bottle propelling pencil and lighter combination, the pull off base opening to reveal the lighter and well, marked "Utica Co Montreal Patent Pend. Allemagne" to the underside, the top of the bottle with twisting propelling pencil, 3 1/8in. (8cm.) long. *Condition: in very good condition, with light wear to plate, working.

Hold upright and blow on rubber tube to reproduce the clear, musical notes of canary, in original box. *Condition: in excellent condition, slight gilt rubbing on canary, box very good, light staining.
An early Edwardian novelty travelling inkwell, as a realistically modelled tan leather hat box with original leather carrying strap to the top, opening to reveal a gilt interior with inner cap and glass well, 1½in. (3.8cm.) high. *Condition: in excellent condition, leather covering very good with very light wear, push button strong.
Two Chinese Canton famille rose plates, early 19th century, one enamelled with an unusual scene of an imposing gilt casket and court attendants in an interior setting, the other painted with an interior scene with figures summoning a deity, within a border enamelled with birds and insects amidst foliage and flowers, each 9 7/8in. (25cm.) diameter. (2)* Condition: Both in very good condition, with very light gilt loss to rims etc, very little enamel loss, some firing imperfections to porcelain.
