Shingai Shoniwa / ChanelA Pair of Black and White Thigh High Boots, 1990swhite kid leather and black patent leather, twenty-one black popper fastenings, CC design to heel, stamped 'sample', featured in a photoshoot for Harper's Bazaar Size 40Footnotes:ProvenanceOffered by singer, songwriter and musician, Shingai Shoniwa.About the boots Shingai says: 'When the opportunity arose to be featured in Harper's Bazaar there was an awesome buzz at the Team Shingai glam team. The editorial would highlight outstanding UK female performers and iconic festival performances. They likened my energy on stage to that of the legendary Jimi Hendrix, one of my all-time favourite artists. We wanted to capture the spirit of my Rock & Roll free-spiritedness with a proud African princess vibe. I chose a suede two-piece shorts suit & had my natural hair sculpted into a cocoon shape, but the Chanel thigh-high boots were the star of the show! I spotted them in the window of Rellik just off of Portobello Road, a week before the shoot. The energy that these monochrome beauties gave us, with the backdrop of Jimmy Hendrix contrasting my eccentric poses, was electric. Here is an ode to the London swinging sixties that I hope Jimi would have been proud of. Light calf stretches would be advised before dancing or walking in these boots & they will be missed.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Baroque ogival frame; 17th century.Carved and polychrome wood.Measurements: 216 x 228 cm; 178 x 181,5 cm (light).Baroque ogival frame made entirely of carved and polychromed wood. The piece has a very characteristic structure, as it avoids the usual rectangular format, showing a pointed finish that ends at the top in the form of an ogival arch. The exterior and interior profiles are defined by carved mouldings that stand out for their black finish, while on the interior perimeter of the frame there is a rich carved and gilded ornamentation, all of which is adorned with a symmetrical composition composed of plant motifs, with acanthus leaves worked in deep relief, developing into fleshy plant groups. This decoration gives the piece great movement, as well as introducing a play of light and shadow caused by the carving itself, where the Baroque taste for an expressive and dynamic aesthetic is evident.
Bureau à batain; Napoleon III period, second half of the 19th century.Porcelain plate on paper and gilt bronze appliques.Keys are preserved. It shows chips, wear and tear and one leg is dislocated.Measurements: 140 x 73.5 x 33 cm.Wooden piece of furniture, combined with a porcelain plate and gilded bronze appliqués. The piece of furniture stands on four chamfered legs and an entablature decorated with masks inspired by Greco-Roman designs and filleted with mixtilinear shapes. This piece of furniture faithfully follows the models of the marquetry of the period, with light, synthesised motifs of dense design, derived from the designs made for Louis XIV. The presence of bronze applications is also typical of Boulle's creations for the French court, and even the architectural details of the structure seem to derive directly from baroque models.

This was an attempt to systematise Gothic architecture into orders, partly following the inspiration of William Kent, with splendid plates of Gothic umbrellos, temples, pavilions, windows and chimneypieces, but it was poorly received. "For inventing five Gothic orders, which he published in 1742, Batty Langley was so ridiculed by his contemporaries (Walpole especially), so despised by serious nineteenth-century revivalists, that his name has become a pejorative for the light-hearted style in general." (Harris).
