Enclosed mentioned by Sayers and containing her drafts for the quotation are also included in the lot. Dorothy L. Sayers was one of the founding members of the Detection Club, together with other crime history authors like Agatha Christie, Freeman Wills Crofts, Arthur Morrison, John Rhode and H. C. Bailey. The members of the club held dinner meetings where they discussed aspects of their works. They developed a specific ethic code aimed to give readers of their books the chance to spot the guilty part.

George Bernard Shaw was co-founder of the London School of Economics in 1895 together with Graham Wallas, Beatrice and Sydney Webb. 10 Adelphi Terrace was the address of the London residence of Shaw and his wife Charlotte Payne Townshend from 1898 until his death in 1950. The property also housed the LSE from 1896 to 1902, when the institute moved to the present site off the Aldwych.
A unique set of black ink signatures of George Harrison, Paul McCartney A unique set of black ink signatures of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and John Lennon on light blue notepaper headed "Grand Hotel, Llandudno" (overall size 17.5 x 13.5cm). Autographs are inscribed "To Carol, love from the Beatles". Some folds and age creasing to paper. Chipping and small tears to margins, signatures remain clear and unaffected [August 1963]. The Beatles undertook a tournee in North Wales in 1963 and performed at the Odeon Cinema in Llandudno for six nights between August 12 and 17, playing twice nightly at 6.30 and 8.50. A friend of the former owner of the lot attended one of the concerts and asked the Fab Four to sign the paper.

Matisse signature remains unaffected. Olga Meerson was a Russian pupil and model to Matisse, with whom she may have had a short affair. They portrayed each other in 1911. She then moved to Germany, where she married Heinz Pringsheim. After falling into depression she took her life in 1929 by throwing herself from the fourth floor of Hotel Adlon in Berlin.

Sold together with an autograph book containing clipped signatures and signed letters of prominent politicians military people mainly related to African campaigns, overall size 23.5 x 19.5cm. Signatures include Lord Roberts of Kandahar, Sir George White, Lord Kitchener, Field Marshal Lord Wolsely, Major-General Archibald Hunter, Major-General Sir H.M.L. Rundle, Major-General J.M. Babington, the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Hugh Kensington, Lord Hamilton, George Joachim Goschen and many others; most autographs are accompanied by photographs, portrait cards from the 1902 Transvaal series and Capstan Navy Cut cigarette cards and printed biographical information. Infantry, the other a Highlander in gratitude for having been [carried?]off the Field in Holland by two of the regiment"; 4to, mailing folds, loss to paper slightly affecting the third page, 4 pages, Richmond, 12 January 1805. The second letter, addressed to Hugh Arbuthnot, was written before sailing off to Sicily and discusses the condition of the 52nd Light Infantry Regiment under Colonel Mackanzie during his absence; 4to, mailing folds with minor splitting, light creasing, 7 pages, Portsmouth, 9 June 1806. In the third letter, addressed to same recipient ("My dear Major"), Moore replies to a letter from Arbuthnot (also included in the lot) regarding a retire permit for a soldier of his regiment who "has no taste for a military life"; 4to, mailing folds with minor splitting, 3 pages, 27 September (1808). Also included are documents relating to the military career of Sir Hugh Arbuthnot, comprising 1862 Royal appointment to "Colonel to Our Seventy ninth Regiment of foot" (Queen's embossed pale blue paper seal and £1,10s revenue stamp) and 1862 Royal grant of the dignity of "Knight Commander of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath" signed by Queen Victoria at head, with Royal paper seal.
