Aixlachapelle”, and with sliding trigger guard safeties with internal extensions to secure the frizzens, and plain steel slab butts each pierced with barrel key for unscrewing the barrel of the other pistol. A brass barrelled and brass framed flintlock boxlock blunderbuss pistol with spring bayonet by Gill, c 1785, 12½” overall, integral bell mouth barrel 7” with Tower private proofs, left side with ramrod pipes and horn ramrod, and with 6½” spring bayonet beneath released by a rear trigger housed in the elongated trigger guard, frame engraved with panels of swags containing flower head and “Gill” in script, plain rounded walnut butt with brass grotesque mask butt cap and vacant oval escutcheon. Good Working Order and Condition (bayonet pitted, light rust to steel parts, the butt has traces of old repairs). Plate 18 Note: Gill worked in Birmingham from 1744 to 1800 and had addresses in London at Charing Cross and Strand.

Warranted” (Hill St B’ham, 1777-1808) lightly etched with crowned GR cypher, crowned R Arms and supporters, standing officer with sword, trophy, with scrolling and foliage, gilt hilt, the guard slotted with 3 loops each side, into pierced crowned GR cypher and knucklebow, to lion’s head pommel and backstrap, diced pronounced ivory grip (cracked) in its leather scabbard with brass locket and (replaced) chape. Basically GC, retaining approx 20% original gilt (blade some wear and light pitting, scabbard leather AF). Plate 5

A 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, curved, shallow fullered blade 32½”, by “Woolley, Sargant & Crane’s. Warranted” (the style of the firm 1818-1820) etched with crowned R Arms, crowned GR cypher, mounted trooper, trophy of arms and florets, steel hilt with langets, pronounced knucklebow, backstrap with ears, wirebound leather grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. GC, a clean example the blade retaining traces of gilding (minor scabbard dents). Plate 5

Winner of the London Gun Trials in 1858, 1859, 1866 and 1875”, and with doll’s head extension; frame stamped with 1884 patent number and “Anson & Deeley’s Patent 13138”, with fine scroll and bouquet engraving, carved fences, top lever gold inlaid “Pape” with gold inlaid automatic top safety, walnut stock with chequered fore end and wrist, vacant gold escutcheon. GWO & C (light wear commensurate with age); in its fitted green baize lined brass bound leather covered case with maker’s trade label, containing rectangular oil bottle by W H Monk of Chester, cleaning rod and mop, with carrying handle and securing straps.

A 6 shot .38” Remington New Model Navy rim fire conversion double action revolver, the 6¾” barrel bearing address and patent date, the conversion effected by removing the rear of the cylinder and replacing it with a removeable plate, the cylinder having to be removed from the gun for loading, retaining the rammer arm but not the piston, with plain varnished walnut grips, the base of the butt with two threaded holes, presumably to take a shoulder stock. A scarce Third Reich NPEA Student’s dagger, by Eickhorn, the blade etched “Mehr Sein als Scheinen”, the hilt with plain brown grip and plain aluminium mounts with no trace of plating, in its plain olive green painted sheath.Clean Condition apart from a few light rust marks on the blade and some minor corrosion to the hilt mounts; in its original brown paper packet printed with the Eickhorn logo and “NPEA-Dolch” (some creasing and minor damage). Plate 11 Note: Issued daggers normally bore the student’s name and graduation date on the crossguard and also the school’s initial and number. The absence of these markings indicates a dagger that was unissued, as in this case.
