The manuscript warrant refers to the augmentation of `one Serjeant, one Corporal and Twenty four Private Men` to each of the ten Companies serving under various Regiments of Foot (listed in the margin as the 36th, 52nd, 71st, 72nd & 73rd) in East India and instructs the General Officers of the Clothing Board `do pass and allow Assignments to be made by the respective Colonels of each of the Regiments of Foot...for the Clothing of the said Additionals viz: Ten Serjeants, Ten Corporals and Two Hundred and Forty Private Men in each Regiment...` Countersigned at the foot by Sir George Yonge (1731-1812) British Secretary at War 1782-83, 1783-94. The manuscript document is addressed to the Chairman and Justices of the Quarter Sessions for the County of Suffolk and is a remission document relating to Robert Tilley `now in confinement in the House of Correction at Beccles in the County of Suffolk, he having been committed to the said Gaol for wandering as a Pedler without Licences` and grants him Free Pardon `in consideration of some favourable circumstances presently represented unto us`. GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. A good, unusual D.S., George PW, as Prince of Wales, two pages, small 4to, n.p. (London), n.d. (April 1806). The printed document is a ticket issued by the Great Chamberlain for the thirteenth day of the trial of Viscount Melville at the House of Lords and states, in part, ‘NO LADY can claim Admission into the Seats called the Peeresses Seats by this Ticket, unless her Name is written on the Back thereof, on the Line denoting the State of her Claim’. Signed by the Prince at the head of the second page, above the five lines referred to (not completed). The ticket bears a printed coat of arms and red wax seal. Some light overall age wear, a minor split to the edge of one fold and slightly irregularly trimmed edges, about VG Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (1742-1811) Scottish Lawyer and Politician. He was the first Secretary of State for War and the last person to be impeached in the United Kingdom. In 1804 Melville entered office as First Lord of the Admiralty when he introduced numerous improvements in the details of the department. Suspicion had arisen, however, as to the financial management of the Admiralty, of which Dundas had been treasurer between 1782-1800. In 1802 a commission of enquiry was appointed, which reported in 1805. The result was the impeachment of Dundas in 1806, on the initiative of Samuel Whitbread, for the misappropriation of public money, and though it ended in an acquittal, and nothing more than formal negligence lay against him, Melville never again held office. This was the last impeachment trial ever held in the House of Lords.
VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. D.S., Appd. Victoria R I, one page, slim 8vo (a folded 4to sheet, with two red wax seals intact to the verso), Admiralty, 17th September 1850. The manuscript document approves the outcome of a General Court Martial relating to John McGraw, a Private in the Chatham Division of Royal Marines, who was tried for desertion and neglect of duty and sentenced to seven years transportation as a felon. Autograph Envelope signed, Albert, partially addressed in his hand to Her Grace the Duchess of Sutherland in Staffordshire. The envelope bears a Penny Red postage stamp and several postmarks, one dated 17th December 1859. Accompanied by the red wax seal neatly cut from the verso. Together with a brief A.N.S., Albert, on a slim 12mo piece, evidently part of an envelope wrapper, n.p., n.d., in full, ‘Immediate, Sir James Graham, Albert’, annotated in ink in an unidentified hand below. Also including Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847) Irish Political Leader. Autograph Envelope signed, Daniel O’Connell, addressed in his hand to Joseph Boyce, a merchant in Dublin, and dated London, 22nd June 1838 in his hand. The Queen thanks her correspondent for his letter and continues ‘I am sorry you should have been informed in a roundabout way of the possibility of your retirement, which was not what was intended. I am afraid that I am responsible for this approach to you, as I am most anxious that no-one should be kept working for me after the normal age of retirement, without some knowledge of the length of their extra service.’ She further states ‘I had meant to talk to you myself on this question, as I had felt you yourself might be wondering about your future or the possibility of being able to enjoy some leisure time to yourself and your family, after years of such faithful service to us’ and in concluding remarks ‘I am very keen that all who have served me and my family over the years should be able to enjoy some time of well earned retirement, and this I am trying to do on all my estates and to all my staff, even though it does mean losing their invaluable services…’ Accompanied by the original Registered envelope hand addressed by the Queen and signed (‘ER’) by her with her initials in the lower left corner. ANDREW: (1960-) Duke of York. T.L.S., Andrew, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, Buckingham Palace, 20th April n.y. [1986], to Lola [Hahn-Warburg]. The Duke thanks his correspondent for their letter of congratulations on his engagement, continuing `It was wonderful to have your kind thoughts and good wishes at this very exciting time and we are most grateful to you for taking the trouble to write. We are absolutely overwhelmed with messages; it is amazing how many kind people there are.` Two file holes to the left edge and some very light surface creasing, not affecting the text or signature, G Lola Hahn-Warburg (1901-1989) Sister-in-Law of Kurt Hahn, the German Educator. Churchill commiserates with his correspondent, writing `I wish to tell you how sorry I am that you failed to secure election on this occasion. I hear that you made an excellent fight, and I hope that you may have better luck on another occasion.` With blank integral leaf. About VG Churchill served as Home Secretary from 1910-11 in the cabinet of Liberal Prime Minister H. H. Asquith. The present letter is written during the General Election of December 1910 when there was a severe decline in support for the Liberal Party.

Collins states that his correspondent`s letter to Cathal Brugha has been handed to him and continues `Your name was also mentioned to me by Mr. W. Macgregor Johnston....This latter gentleman advised me that he had written you asking you to communicate with me.` In concluding Collins remarks `He explained that you had several proposals to lay before us and I await your reply` ending the sentence with the holograph words `with very keen interest`. The printed document, featuring a fine engraved border decorated with the Imperial Eagles and military insignia, is a military commission promoting Major Karl von Stackelberg to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel following his `zealous and industrious` performance in the Russian service and stating `we do have the hope and the confidence that he in the new rank most graciously bestowed upon him by us, will conduct himself as uprightly and as properly as befit`s the upright and good officer.` Boldly signed by the Empress at the foot. With large blind embossed Imperial paper seal affixed. A small black rubber stamp to the verso indicates that the document was once part of the collection of Dr. Max Thorek of Chicago. Printed brochure signed, by both Ross and Keith Smith individually, the 4to brochure being a short story of the Ross Smith flight from England to Australia under the patronage of the Prince of Wales. Illustrated with a map of the flight from Hounslow to Port Darwin, portraits of the brothers in their flying caps and goggles and also featuring an advert for an illustrated travelogue. Signed by both Ross and Keith Smith with their names alone to light areas of the attractive cover. Some light overall age wear and minor foxing and discolouration to the cover, largely at the edges.
