Oil paint on canvas depicting motherhood "Study for the drama of a mother", Trento Longaretti (Treviglio, 1916 - Bergamo, 2017). Cm 70x60. Signed lower left. Dated 1977-78 on the back. "The debut in the art world of Trento Longaretti dates back to the late '30s through participation in the" Littoriali dell'Arte "and won numerous awards such as the Mylius Prize and the Prize Stanga, also he participates in the first and second edition of the Bergamo Prize. it reaches international recognition in 1942 exposing the Venice Biennale and the "Exhibition of the artists in arms" at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. in 1952 he was invited to the national Quadrennial in Rome and the following year won the national competition for the Carrara Academy of Bergamo direction along the painting Chair, a position that will last until 1978. The themes dear to Longaretti such as motherboards, the world of the humble and the human condition, are reported through the use of an existentialist painting, which renews the figurative tradition, giving ethereality and warmth, making us feel instinctively that feeling of melancholy and loneliness, that permeates the entire production. We can see the intense creative process, through the pictorial study that presents the framework in question, grimy and frenetic brushstrokes hide in fact, a careful and thorough investigation of light and shadow, creating a scene full of drama and tragedy. His works are in the Vatican, in Milan Cathedral, the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, the Duomo di Novara. His paintings are in the Museum of Modern Art in Basel, in the Vatican Museums, the Ricci Oddi Gallery of Piacenza, in the Pinacoteca Carrara in Bergamo, in the Civic Gallery of Gallarate, in the Modern Art Gallery in Milan, the Museo della Permanente in Milan." Oil paint on canvas depicting boy with donkey, Alessandro Abate (Catania, 1867 - Catania, 1953). Signed and dated 1911 on the lower right. Alessandro Abate, Sicilian multifaceted artist, took the first steps of his artistic training in Catania where, from 15 to 18 years, attended the course in drawing and painting, taught by the realist painter Antonino Gandolfo. Later he moved to Naples, he studied at the Institute of Fine Arts under the guide of the professor Vincenzo Marinelli and in Rome, in 1893, he obtained, by the Municipality of Catania, a scholarship for an advanced course, governed by the professor Iacovacci. He participated to numerous exhibitions, national and international, including those of Rome (1894), Palermo (1895), Milan (1897), Turin (1902), Santiago (1906) and the Sicilian farm, located in Piazza d'Armi , today Piazza Giovanni Verga, inaugurated in Catania on 14 April 1907. In 1927 he obtained the grand prix Exhibition of Beaux Arts in Paris and from 1929 to 1931 he worked and exhibited at the Fair of Tripoli. The world of the poor people is studied by the painter, which portrays a simple country boy with donkey, depicted during his everyday life. The artist leads a psychological analysis of the character through the clever use of the light and brushwork, thick and pasty. ASOR STUDIO Sardo Dr. Eleonora Catania, 09/09/2020

Lot 2

Oil paint on octagonal copper (hand reversed), depicting the Holy Family of cherries. Mid-seventeenth century, Allegedly by Elizabetta Sirani (Bologna, 1638 - Bologna, 1665). Octagonal frame in antique tortoise shell. Cm 29,5x22,5. With frame cm 38x31. Enchanting example of Marian painting, called "Quadretto da letto"(small bed painting), used for prayers and meditations. The light, through the half-hues's use, emphasizes the faces and the whitened. Furthermore, the character's gazes are marked by sweetness and the composition is made interesting by a gestural play made of hands. Certainly the author of the painting gave to this very simple scene a great resolution of family intimacy. The main character of the painting is Saint Joseph, in which the role of earthly father, is enhanced in the period of the Counter-Reformation, which re-evaluates the centrality of his figure on the Divine plane. The act of offering cherries highlights the intimate correspondence between father and son and constitutes the centrality of the painting." ASOR Studio
