Scarce. The Nobel Laureate's masterpiece follows the life and fate of the Don Cossacks during the Great War and Russian Revolution. Beginning in 1926 and completed in 1940, it was one of the first works of Soviet literature to be translated into English.

Circle of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt (Delft 1567-1641) Portrait of Robert Bertie, 1st Earl of Lindsey (1582-1642), General to King Charles the First, bust-length, in armour, with a lace-trimmed collar and silver embroidered blue sash Unsigned, titled in the upper left-hand corner, oil on panel.68cm x 53cm (26.75in x 20.75in)Robert was the eldest son of Peregrine, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby and his wife Mary de Vere, daughter of the Earl of Oxford. He succeeded his father as 14th Baron Willoughby in 1601 and married Elizabeth Montagu of Boughton in 1604. In 1626, he was created Earl of Lindsey and was made a Knight of the Garter the following year. King Charles I appointed him First Lord of the Admiralty from 1635 to 1636 and Lindsey also established his claim, through his mother, to the hereditary office of Lord Great Chamberlain of England. Lord Lindsey supported King Charles I in the Civil War and, as an experienced military commander, the King appointed him General of his Royalist troops in August 1542 prior to the Battle of Edgehill. Lindsey fought on foot at the head of his infantry regiment at the battle, but was shot through the thigh and captured by the Roundheads. He was taken to a nearby barn, but died of his wounds the following day on 23 October 1642. He is buried at the church of St Michael and All Angels, Edenham.The painting is in good, restored condition. Under UV light there is evidence of cleaning and overpainting. There is a repaired split to the panel running from top to bottom with corresponding inpainting and a repair strip on verso. There is some minor craquelure across the surface of the painting and some light surface scuffs and scratches with some small areas of paint loss around the edges of the panel. The painting is ornately framed but not glazed. The frame has the odd minor knock and loss commensurate with age.

The canvas tension is slightly slack, but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a stable condition overall. The varnish layer is thick, glossy and yellowed. There are localised areas of overpaint visible under ultraviolet light. It is unclear if some elements of the composition have been reworked, this requires further investigation.Framed 90 x 77cm
