Egyptian Faience Shabti, Late Period, C. 664 - 332 BC. A light green glazed faience shabti section for an overseer called Nes - Khonsu. Style is the typical form of an overseer. Black paint still remaining around the tripartite wig and triangular apron, the left arm bent across the chest holding a whip. Overseers played a very important part in Pharaoh's kingdom; Overseers would supervise certain areas of the country such as the military and farm land. Nes-Khonsu" on it which means "He Who belongs to Khonsu" (the Moon God). Background: Overseers were a very important part of the structure of Egyptian works and political working. Shabtis were placed in the tombs amongst the belonging of the deceased and were intended to perform as servants, should they be commanded to do manual labor in the afterlife. Most varieties of shabtis carry a hoe on their shoulder and a basket on their backs. This tells us that they were intended to farm for the deceased. Each figure normally has hieroglyphs on the legs they carried inscriptions asserting their readiness to answer the gods' summons to work. Size: 10.1 cm. Provenance: Ex. Artificial light was used everywhere in the Roman Empire, and pottery oil lamps offered an alternative to candle light.
