A set of two carver arm and eight single late Georgian mahogany dining chairs, each with bowed top rail and moulded stiles and with stuffover seat and raised on ring turned front legs (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Having had a good look at these chairs we find that two of the six single chairs are later replacements. The colour of the timber is slightly different however similar enough not to be problematic. The two replacement chairs are in good order. All other chairs are structurally sound. They have clearly been through a workshop in recent times (within the last 20 years). They have numerous repairs in all of the typical places, namely the tops of the stiles and where the bowed top rails meet the stiles. The rear legs have also been filled and pegged. There are some repairs to the knees on the front legs also. One armchair has had a substantial break to the top of each stile but the repair if structurally sound although visible from the rear. The same armchair has an open break on the right hand side of the back support. The seats are reasonably well upholstered. However being a light colour there are stains and marks to most of the seats. They are comfortable to sit on and if the seats will not clean then it is a question of recovering rather than full reupholstering. There are some losses of polish to the bowed top rails on three of the chairs. One of the single chairs has a very visible repair to the bowed top rail. Again this is structurally sound. We cannot see any evidence of any woodworm.
A 19th century oil painting on canvas, of a shipwreck, 50 cm x 64 cm, framed, relined. CONDITION REPORT: The painting has been relined. The relining appears to be covering at least one canvas repair. Looking at the painting from the front there is a 3 cm x 2 cm oval wear overpainting is visible and a corresponding raised section on the back of the canvas behind the relining. The painting is reasonably flat but does have universal craquelure. There are no current areas of lifting paint. We have looked at the painting under a UV light and whilst there are some minor areas that have been overpainted these are minimal. The painting is nibbled all of the way around the edges where it is laid onto the new canvas. This is hidden by the current slip. The stretcher outlines are visible on the font of the canvas. Judging by the slightly primitive nature of the painting it is probably 19th century. The painting is not on its original stretchers. We have no significant information regarding the provenance of this picture.
