TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1954-1955. 3 vols. First editions, all volumes signed by Tolkien on the front-free endpapers, 8vo (221 x 137mm.) 3 folding maps to rear. Note: 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Two Towers' are second impressions, 'The Return of the King' is a first impression. It has the '4' signature on p.49 and the slipped text. The second impression of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' has always been notably (2 or 3mm) smaller than other impressions. A possible reason is that the printer, Jarrold & Son, did not keep the type standing from the first impression and so when the publisher, Allen & Unwin, asked for another impression the printer had to quickly re-set the type, which led to many new inaccuracies in the text, as well as a slightly different sized binding. [Hammond, 97.].Buyer’s Premium 24.5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price. Lots purchased online via the-saleroom.com will attract an additional premium of 5% (including VAT @ 0%) of the hammer price.

The acetate contains a printed 'Decca Group Advance Recording' labels with the timing of '3-37' in red print. The acetate is in very well preserved VG+ condition showing a few light and minor surface marks though nothing heavier at all. This copy is Geoffrey Britton’s personal acetate and contains an unreleased version of the song ‘Rub Out’, most likely an early studio take or demo recording. Featuring a piano line that was later abandoned, the acetate runs at 3:37, 40 seconds longer than the single that clocks in at 2:57. The acetate version of ‘Rub Out’ has never been issued officially or otherwise. Following his departure from Wings, Geoff Britton (named on the single as Jeff) was offered a one single deal with Decca Records, which saw the release of ‘Rub Out’ b/w ‘Breakwood.’ With its hypnotic drumbeat and thundering synth and guitar lines, the anthemic ‘Rub Out’ was a pioneering electro-rock record that sounds as fresh in 2021 as it did when it was recorded back in 1976.

This example has been signed to inner gatefold by Ian Curtis, Stephen Morris, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook. With set of four stickers and a separate 'Factory Records' sticker in excellent condition. Provenance: the vendor attended the Bowdon Vale concert and had the record signed in person.
