A Rare and Interesting Album of Turkish drawings by Paul Musurus 1840-1927- The artist`s at their studio; gouache, monogrammed, The deposition; Figure studies; multiple images on a single sheet, numerous studies of gentlemen; officers, Turkish soldiers and historical figures mostly standing full-length; various landscapes and seascapes; Battle scenes, mostly pen and brown ink, all pinned into a album, various proportions, (largest) 20x15cm, Note: Paul Musurus, son of the Turkish ambassador to Britain Pacha Musurus, c. 1850 (depicted in Vanity Fair, published 1887) A member of a Greek orthodox family of considerable literary attainments. He later found modest fame as a published poet. Uncle and mentor to Anna De Noailles, a highly accomplished French poet. Accompanying this album are various letters and correspondence from the Turkish Ambassador to Britain c.1977, as well as The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, The British Museum and The Victoria and Albert, expressing there appreciation at being bequest several sketches from the estate, mostly dating from the earlier part of the 20th century. The Ambassador referring to a portrait in his possession of the Sultan Abdul Mejid by Paul Musurus and as being offered at Sotheby`s in 1977 for the reason given- "The Sultan`s Gaze was rather Imperious to live with"; These letters shedding a little light on this intriguing and talented draughtsman. Musurus`s use and understanding of Chiaroscuro is evident in his pen and brown ink wash drawings. The subject matter and confident hand reminiscent of François Boucher 1703-1770, (for the stump work on the pen and ink studies alone) Eugène Delacroix, Constantin Guys 1802-1892 and other French contemporaries. His small portrait and figurative drawings seemingly worked with over with finger and thumb giving a wonderful tonal quality to the sketches. This album presumably representing images and techniques employed by the artist and appearing to be a personal piece of this obscure painters oeurve. (a lot) (album)
