Richard Ansett (British, born 1966)Land of Hope and Glory - Grayson Perry - Birling Gap, 2017 signed and inscribed 'ed 7/12' in black inkinkjet print in colours on Hahnemühle paper67.4 x 90cm (26 9/16 x 35 7/16in).Footnotes:Photographed at the time of the EU referendum, Ansett worked with Perry to create an image which would provide an ambivalent, satirical commentary on Brexit. Located at Birling Gap - not quite the 'White Cliffs of Dover', but it is both a nod to the homely idealism that is associated with that landmark, famously sung by Vera Lynn during the Second World War and the notion of a risky 'cliff edge'. Part of a long term collaboration between photographer and the artist, Perry dressed as his alter-ego Claire - chose to wear what Ansett describes as a 'pale blue, Little Bo Peep number' which he adds was 'genius', especially as the light blue pattern works perfectly with the muted tones of the landscape, highlighting the 'pop' of the red, white and blue of the Union Jack which Claire holds as it flickers in the wind. Although Ansett had envisaged Claire wearing her customary high heels, the vertiginous location required more sensible footwear and so the Mary-Jane shoes with white cotton socks were chosen instead, harking back with tongue in cheek to the nursery-rhyme aesthetic. As Ansett has noted, Perry is the perfect figure to question and interrogate the idea of 'Britishness': 'he is in himself the personification of a democratic multicultural society, not tolerated, accepted equally as part of this gorgeous diaspora and this is a glimmer of hope that from the chaos we can build a new more inclusive contemporary Britain. It's actually what they fought and died for, real freedom and I feel in these moments that Sir Grayson shares a place in the nations heart equal to Vera' [Lynn, who famously sang The White Cliffs of Dover]. Witty and layered with meaning, Land of Hope and Glory is an important photograph which offers a fresh and intelligent critique on British identity in the 21st Century. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ††VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
