The surface is slightly flattened as a result of the restoration process. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. There is very little to discern in the way of restoration or overpainting following inspection under UV light but this does not preclude the possibility of the varnish preventing visibility. No obvious or significant areas of later paint by eye. A series of tiny nicks to canvas along the gentleman's left-hand side thigh seated on the right-hand side with the odd other further tiny loss or nick to surface elsewhere.

Jan Geerard Smits (1823-1910) DutchSummerWinterSigned, oil on panel, 31cm by 38.5cm (2)Winter - Cleaned and revarnished. Panel apparently stable and sound. Scattered small sized retouches through sky, presumably to replace old flaked paint. Slightly larger more concentrated patch of retouching right hand side edge which is roughly 3cm in diameter and would appear to be as a result of a fairly fine horizontal crack (probably in line with the grain of the wood). No evidence of more significant repair to reverse of panel. Further fine horizontal crack lower on right hand side in line with the tops of the snow covered trees. Summer - Cleaned and revarnished. Panel seemingly in a stable state of preservation. Some very fine essentially horizontal craquelure following the grain of the wood. The grey tones of the clouds in the upper part of the sky would appear to have had some general strengthening. A cluster of patches of retouching above and left of the windmill on the left hand side, the largest being approx. 1.5cm by 2cm (although not entirely consistent). Other more minor and very scattered retouches to sky and retouching to upper left hand corner, edges, and a further slightly more notable patch of retouching presumably to repair a horizontal fairly superficial crack to panel slightly above centre, right hand side edge and is approx 2-3mm in width and 1-1.5cm in length. Both paintings now with fairly light surface dirt and discoloured varnish.

The canvas is slightly bowing in a convex fashion along the left hand side edge but does not present any immediate associated condition issues. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Paint slightly thinned any flattened as a result of the restoration process. Isolated areas of fine stable craquelure. A good degree of strengthening throughout the sky. More minor and linear retouching and strengthening to the shadows and definition within the masonry of the lantern utop the cupola with further fairly isolated areas of strengthening to the darkest tones and shadows of the areas between the pillars below the dome. The internal part of the pedimented window to far left hand side shows retouching and strengthening. With further fairly sporadic retouching and strengthening to the darker tones and shadows across the remainder of the facade, in addition to scattered retouching to figures in general and elements of the foliage. The edges of the canvas show a light degree of retouching in general. Tiny surface scuff/scratch within second window left above the colonnaded entrance.

Some general retouching to old cracquelure and within the composition elsewhere. Surface is somewhat flattened as a result of the restoration process and paint is thin in places, light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Tiny nick to surface approx centre of the rug within lower right-hand corner. Areas of mild stable cracquelure. Otherwise in a stable and presentable state of preservation.

Further fine and sporadic retouches within the figure group and rowing boat of the foreground. More concentrated vertical patch of retouching to the lower vertical stretcher shadow left of figure group by boat approx 1cm wide by 7cm in length as an overall. Further retouches within the underside of bridge left-hand side and finer detailing of some of the masonry to also include delicate parts of left-hand side tower and very sporadic and fine elements within the left-hand side of the composition. A Chinese Silver Rice-Wine Ewer, Probably Qianlong Period (1735-1796), With Marks for Cornelis Knuystingh, Rotterdam, 1783, Presumably as Importer lobed octagonal and on conforming spreading foot, each lobe chased with differing foliage and flowers, some heightened with birds and each on a matted ground, alternating panels further respectively decorated with rabbits, a crane, a rooster and a horse, with plain handle and spout, the detachable cover similarly decorated and with openwork quatrefoil finial11cm high, 8oz 17dwt, 275grWhile very probably not made for export Chinese silver pots of a similar form to the present example, often called teapots, had arrived in Europe as early as the late 17th century. One example was given to Louis XIV in 1686 by Siamese envoys. That example, which was acquired by the Palace of Versailles in 2018 (V.2018.8), is of a similar tapering shape to the present example and with panels decorated with Chinoiserie motifs, though it is heightened with gilding. Another example which can be definitively dated is an example which is marked for London, 1682. While there has long been speculation about the origins of that example H. A. Crosby Forbes, John Devereux Kernan and Ruth S. Wilkins felt it was of Chinese manufacture and marked on import into London (H. A. Crosby Forbes, John Devereux Kernan and Ruth S. Wilkins, Chinese Export Silver 1785-1885, Milton, Massachusetts, 1975, pp. 51-52, fig. 22).Other examples include one in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, dated circa 1680 (M.69:1, 2-1955), another, dated to the Kangxi period, which is thought to have been from the collections of the Duke of Buccleuch which was on the market in 2008 (Christie’s, London, 23 October 2008, lot 233 and a third sold by Bonhams (17 May 2018, lot 266). While unusual to be marked with Dutch marks this would not be the only known example of Chinese silver being so marked. There is for example a ‘large octofoil [sic] basin, decorated with Chinese subjects in relief’ recorded as being marked for Amsterdam 1713, which was part of the silver belonging to the Duke of Portland (A. E. Jones, Catalogue of Plate Belonging to the Duke of Portland, K.G., G.C.V.O. at Welbeck Abbey, London, 1935, p. 42).Marked underneath with Dutch marks and with a later Dutch tax mark. There is some overall light surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a very minor softening to the high points.
