Titanic Interest: Ltd Edition Framed Signed Print “Salvation” By Simon Fisher. No.273 of 850. After her heroic dash through an ice-strewn sea in response to the incredible S.O.S. from the brand-new White Star Liner Titanic, the little Cunarder Carpathia takes aboard the half frozen survivors in the cold light of morning. On her bridge Fourth Officer Boxhall breaks the unbelievable news to Captain Rostron in reply to his enquiry – “The Titanic has gone down?” “Yes” – his voice breaking with the emotion of it – “She went down at about two thirty.” Pencil signed and numbered by the artist and survivor Millvina Dean. Also signed by Margaret Howman, daughter of Captain Rostron. The painting captures the stark beauty of that fateful morning with the rising sun shining across the sombre scene, the great ice-bergs reflecting its colours. As Captain Rostron put it so aptly – “So wonderful to look at, so dreadful to touch”. 850 Edition signed and numbered by the artist and survivor Millvina Dean. Also signed by Margaret Howman, daughter of Captain Rostron.

Lot 4

Galliae Tabule Geographicae . This title page is from the first edition of the Galliae (France) volume of Gerard Mercator`s edition of Ptolemy`s Geographia. The beautifully designed sheet is in the Mannerist style, composed of elaborate scrolls and volutes which are characteristic of this style, as well as decorative fruits, flowers, birds, and masks. At the top of the rectangular centerpiece is the portrait of a king, possibly representing Charlemagne, who was King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans. For nearly sixty years, during one of the most important periods in cartographic history, Gerard Mercator was the preeminent cartographer - his name is second only to Ptolemy and is now synonymous with the form of map projection still in use today. He devoted much of his life to his maps of Ptolemy`s Geography. Original color with light toning and soiling that are mostly confined to the blank margins. 8.8"" W x 12.5"" H . Mercator, Gerard . 1585

Lot 6

Italiae, Sclavoniae, et Graeciae Tabule Geographice . This handsome sheet introduced the section of Mercator`s famous Atlas that contained maps of Italy and Greece. The title is enclosed in an architectural framework. At the top of the pediment, an eagle holds a wreath around Janus, the two-faced Roman god who is associated with doorways and beginnings. A nice impression with attractive color and light, scattered foxing. 7.1"" W x 11.4"" H . Mercator/Hondius, 1623

Lot 7

Belgii in Ferioris Geographicae Tabule . This lovely title page preceded the section on the Low Countries in Mercator`s Atlas. The title page is in the Dutch Renaissance style, surrounded with strapwork designs, garlands, fruit, fish and putti. A nice impression with attractive color, a minor damp stain in bottom blank margin, and light, scattered foxing primarily confined to the blank margins. 6.5"" W x 9"" H . Mercator/Hondius, 1623

Lot 8

Guil. et Ioannis Blaeu Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus. Partis Primae pars Altera . This title page from Blaeu`s great atlas is presented in the architectural format. A knight in full armor and a nun flank the title. At the top are two maidens displaying coats of arms, and the allegorical figure of Mars with his ferocious hounds. The Latin title and imprint are pasted onto the engraved framework, as was customary with title pages. A fine impression with attractive color, light soiling and one very faint pencil notation in the image. 7.7"" W x 12.8"" H . Blaeu, (Family) . 1640

Lot 27

Mappe-Monde Dressee sur les Observations de Mrs. de l`Academie Royale des Sciences et Quelques Autres et sur les Memoires les Plus Recens… . This handsome double hemisphere map is a corrected version of Delisle’s first world map, issued in 1700. The address notation in the lower cartouche removes Delisle`s address in favor of Schenk`s imprint. In this edition new information corrects the representation of the Great Lakes, South America, and the Niger River in Africa. In keeping with Delisle`s desire for accuracy, the northwestern portion of North America is not illustrated here and there is no evidence of Antarctica. Delisle used accounts from French explorers and colonizers of the Gulf of Mexico region. He also had access to accounts from survivors of La Salle’s expedition in the late 1680`s. Despite his efforts to produce highly accurate maps, this map shows New Guinea connected to Australia, and it appears that Japan is connected to the mainland (Terre de Yeco) to the north. In addition, Terre de la Compagnie appears to the northeast of Japan with a partial outline continuing in the western hemisphere accompanied by a note regarding its discovery by Dom Jean de Gama. The tracks of major explorers and their discoveries are charted in the oceans. The elegantly engraved title cartouche features female representations of the continents balanced by a ribbon-style banner advertising Delisle’s upcoming book, Novelle Introduction a la Geographie.See also lot 772 for Rodney Shirley`s excellent reference work on world maps, which discusses this map. A strong impression with attractive color and light soiling at top. There is a soft vertical crease at left that has been professionally reinforced on verso, and a small hole and a couple of short tears near the ribbon at top left have also been professionally repaired. 23.3"" W x 17.7"" H . Delisle/Schenk, 1708

A New & Correct Sea Chart of the Whole World Shewing the Variations of ye Compass as They Were Found Ano 1700... Edmund Halley (1656-1742) was an English astronomer, meteorologist, and physicist best known for calculating the orbit of the eponymous Halley`s Comet. In 1686 Halley became the first to depict trade winds and monsoons on a map, which appeared on his untitled diagrammatic world map. Halley was granted temporary Captainship in the Royal Navy for his scientific voyage through the Atlantic on the ship Paramore, during which he investigated the laws governing the variation of the compass. He published his findings in General Chart of the Variation of the Compass (1701), a chart of the Atlantic ocean which was the first to use isogonic, or Halleyan, lines to show the pattern of magnetic variation. The following year Halley extended his chart to the western Pacific, using data from journals of voyages in the Indian Seas. This reduced version of Halley`s original chart shows magnetic variation of the compass, with bold double-lines crossing through Bermuda and southeast Asia indicating no magnetic variation. Trade winds are depicted primarily between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. California appears as an island with an indented northern coast with several small islands between it and the mainland. The Great Lakes do not appear. New Guinea appears to still be connected to Australia and New Zealand is only partially delineated. An inset of the polar region is included at bottom along with a note stating that the large two-sheet map of the world is sold by R. Mount and T. Page on Great Tower Hill, London. Engraved by John Harris. Issued folding and trimmed to the neatline at bottom, with a few small portions of the neatline missing. There is a binding trim at lower right and associated 0.5"" binding tear. Light soiling with a few chips and fold separations at top and bottom. 18.9"" W x 7.7"" H . Halley, Edmund . 1710

Lot 32

Mappemonde ou Description du Globe Terrestre Dressee sur les Memoires les Plus Nouveaux, et Assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques . This lovely and decorative double-hemisphere map shows the tracks of the voyages of Bouvet de Lozier (1738-39) in the Antarctic and of Anson (1740-43) across the Pacific, along with the Manilla - Acapulco route of the Spanish galleons. It was Anson`s capture of a richly laden galleon in 1743 that made his expedition so important in the annals of Pacific voyages. Australia is depicted with a conjectural coastline connected to Tasmania, and Terre de Diemen appears both in Tasmania and on the northern coast. In North America the Pacific Northwest is beginning to take shape with the additions of Admiral de Fonte`s discoveries, although there are still numerous inaccuracies. A series of rivers and lakes appears to depict at least one Northwest Passage, including L. de Fonte, Gr. Riviere de l`Ouest, and Lac Bernarda. The map is decorated with an elaborate, figural cartouche that was designed by Cochin and engraved by Groux. The attribution cartouche at the bottom is flanked by putti and clouds. This is the third state with changes to the Pacific Northwest. Issued folding on watermarked paper with several short fold separations that have been professionally repaired. There is light soiling, a few light creases, and a 1"" tear extending from centerfold towards South America that has also been professionally repaired. 27.9"" W x 18.5"" H . Robert de Vaugondy/Boudet, 1776

Lot 34

L`Ancien Monde et le Nouveau en Deux Hemispheres . Attractive double hemisphere world map. In North America, the United States is named and confined along the eastern seaboard. The entire western region is blank with the only place name being Cape Mendocino. There is a large group of islands in the North Pacific including Alaschka in the vicinity of Alaska. Tasmania is attached to Australia and both islands of New Zealand are depicted. Issued folding with some small light stains and minor offsetting. 16"" W x 8.4"" H . Bonne, Rigobert . 1785
