Boer War British Queens South Africa Medal Imperial Light Infantry, with four claps Transvaal, Laing's Nek, Cape Colony and Orange Free State awarded to 1083 PTE A Hanton.Following the outbreak of the Boer War Hanton joined the Imperial Light Infantry, the unit endured a series of fierce engagements with the Boers until it was disbanded in June 1901. The War had become more fluid and mounted troops were now needed, indeed it appears that during the latter part of the conflict Hanton went on to serve with the Prince of Wales Light Horse

Unknown if this is firing fault or has been later done. There is also some roughness to the outside of the rim. The base has a ring running round it as though it may have come off or suchlike during the manufacture pre-firing. See images for further details. The Fishley bowl - has several small chips/losses to the glaze as well as crazing throughout. The Catherine Ball bowl has a couple of small chips/areas of roughness to the rim. The Abuja bowl has some roughness to the rim, crazing all over and the shallow dish has some chips to the underside of the rim. On the face of it large areas of craquelure particularly to the sky areas. Under ultraviolet light there are a few patches of repainting to that sky area top right, top middle and top left and perhaps some touching up to the trees beyond the path on which the animals and drover are. This double sided frame includes two antique pastel drawings by Romantic genre and portrait painter Octave Tassaert, a contemporary of Eugene Delacroix who greatly admired his works. Tassaert has drawn quintessential Romantic portraits: on one side, a young man with disheveled hair and an open collar shirt under his coat looks to the side. On the other, a young male looks down in a moment of introspection. Tassaert used highly contrasted light and dark areas to emphasize the intensity of his sitters. The larger portrait is signed and dated on lower right: Tassaert 1823. Housed in the original elaborate gilded wooden frame with copper borders and grey mats.
