Bronze gilt with silver inlaysTibet, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 18 cmWeight: 241 gramsUnusual shrine of a Bodhisattva on a rectangular plinth with decorative bands, open-work support with stone inlay at the center and a round reverse lotus base with beaded rim. The Bodhisattva is seated cross-legged with soles of feet showing, wearing flowy garments covering the legs. The shoulders are also dressed with decorative robes, the upper body seems to be dressed in aristocratic clothes with a chest-armour and puffy sleeves. The hands are raised in front of the chest, showing the dharmachakra mudra. The face looks juvenile with a light smile and downcast eyes, earlobes elongated. The Bodhisattva is wearing a pompous crown of stone inlay. He is surrounded by a big flaming aureole with additional stone inlay, his head also bears a halo in the same fashion with a lotus flower at the top center. The back of this outstanding bronze is relatively plain.

BronzeIndia, 16th to 17th centuryDimensions: Height 44 cm by 14 cmWeight: 4062 gramsAlso called the "Lord of Day and Light" or "God of the Sun", here standing on a four-footed base, he is supported by seven horses also standing for the seven days of the week or the colours of visible light. In front of his feet is a kneeling worshipper. The God is surrounded by a beaded gate or aureole with two other adorents standing beside him, only reaching above his knee, they are gesturing the abhaya and varada mudra. All of the figures are dressed in short dhotis and with their hair in a chignon or high pointy headdress. Suryas dhoti is fastened around the waist with a festooned belt, sacred thread runs along his chest, a necklace decorates the torso. His arms are adorned with bracelets and armlets, one hand is pointing to the ground with thumb and index finger touching, the other hand is pointing to the sky with thumb and index finger touching. His face is smiling slightly with downcast eyes and a raised elongated urna in the center of the eyebrows.

Provenance: Richard Hargen, Worcestershire Condition Report: The colour is good and there is no obvious discolouration to the sheet. There is a small tear (approx 2cm) to the lower right corner, and a further similar sized tear to the upper edge. There also appears to be a small area of repair (approx. 1cm) above the sitter's head. Some light surface dirt throughout the sheet and some very light undulation under the glaze.
