Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) - two hand written and signed letters to Constantine Alexander Ionides (1833-1900) - collector and art patron (2) The letters read:Monday Dear Ionides. I was very sorry not to see you this morning. I believe you idea of a stand 1 ½ ft high will do quite well. The picture itself should not stand more than a foot at very utmost from the ground to be seen to advantage by the seated person. Here, the height it stood at was 9 ½ inches. ?? ?? made a little higher at the back to facilitate its being fastened (by sloping cards or chains I suppose) into the top of the dado. This I find Holland will do for you - else Foord Dickinson might be the best people. The pictures should slope forward as here - the back edge of the frame at top was sloped about 13 inches I suppose from the straight uprights of the easel. It should be as far away from the white dado as possible, and the stand not made light but dark. The picture can not help looking dull otherwise ?? it is very brilliant if it gets a chance. It might to stand with the light to the left of spectator, as here, otherwise it will lose in effect. By an oversight I omitted to show the picture, when here, to Stephens the Athenaeum critic whom you probably know. I was waiting till there should be another one or two to show him, but forgot that yours should be leaving me. Would you let me see it in your house when rightly arranged, if he called? Any afternoon I could give father explanation about the stand if needed. Ever yours truly D. G. Rossetti And:Sunday Dear Ionides. The easel should be 6ft high not of the larger size than this maker also by Windsor and Newton. The fitting up of the picture should be done by Foord and Dickinson the frame makers (129 Wardour Street) who always do it for me and know what is ??. There must be a counterweight laid across the back foot of the easel, or the picture will not be safe. The picture should be sloped forward somewhat on the easel. I will look up a drawing and let you know about it. Yours ?? D. G. Rossetti

Lot 304

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) - a hand written and signed letters to Constantine Alexander Ionides (1833-1900) - collector and art patron (1) The letter reads:Sunday My dear IonidesI send you the two monograms. I will make them more of the plain Roman character if you like, but I fancy these are distinct. For the one Miss Ionides the ?? could be introduced or left out as you preferred. The ? written within the oval improved the effect, particularly if the monogram is printed in gold. Gold or a very light warm grey are the most agreeable colours. The ovals are not quite true, but this their executant can get right - he can also make the holes smaller, which you would probably prefer, though I am not certain.Yours sincerely D.G. RossettiC.A. Ionides EsqPS. I am sure you make all kind allowance for my insistent stay at home habits. If I went anywhere, believe me, I would come to you.
