A detailed log of the rescue voyage of HMS Comet from Port Jackson in Australia to Pitcairns Island, dated between December 27th 1830 and February 27th 1831. The six page log is embellished with four monochrome watercolours of the North and South heads of Port Jackson, Cape Brett New Zealand, a small village on the eastern side of the bay where the sloop landed on the island and a sketch of the entire island, Pitcairn, the latter initialled JBB. It begins with why the log was written and goes on to describe specific people on board, the weather conditions, descriptions of the natives of New Zealand and details of landing at Pitcairns and talks with the natives to leave highlighting that they had not had any rain for fourteen months. Accompanying the log is an ink drawn map displaying the voyage to Pitcairn and back via Tahiti. (split along all folds) The inhabitants of Pitcairns Island had been suffering from a lack of water when in 1830 the British Government ordered that they should be rescued and settled in Tahiti. HMS Comet, under the command of Captain Alex. A Sandilands, along with the Lucy Ann, a Barque from Sidney, set sail on December 27th 1830 and, after stopping in New Zealand to replenish stores, they, according to the log, observed Pitcairns at first light on the 27th February 1831. Eighty seven inhabitants were boarded onto the Lucy Ann and arrived in Tahiti on March 6th to be warmly received by Queen Pomare. Provenance. From the collection of the late Commander B. J.
