D.S., Clive, three pages, folio, n.p., 25th March 1770. The partially printed document is a deed relating to freehold lands purchased by Clive from Corbyn Morris in which he binds himself to pay Elizabeth Albert of Epsom, daughter of Morris, the sum of two thousand pounds, detailing at length a condition of the obligation involving four annuities of 'sums of Four pounds, Seven pounds, Ninety seven pounds and Six pounds….during the lives of….Corbyn Morris and Edmund Morris his brother….the Reverend Bernard Mills now or late of Bury St. Edmunds in the county of Suffolk….Simon Fanshaw now or late of Pall Mall in the City of Westminster…..John Bright the younger son of John Bright of Totterton in the county of Salop….and Richard the son of Richard Marston of Bishops Castle…', also providing dates for the payments. Signed by Clive at the conclusion alongside his red wax seal. A further manuscript clause at the end of the document is signed by Corbyn Morris and Elizabeth Albert. NOLAN LOUIS: (1818-1854) British Army officer, an authority on cavalry tactics best known for his controversial role in launching the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava. He was the first casualty of that engagement. Extremely rare A.L.S., L E Nolan, four pages, 8vo, Maidstone, 10th November n.y. [1842, incorrectly dated in pencil in another hand 1835], to 'My dear Sir George' [Berkeley]. Nolan informs his correspondent, 'The mare is at your service. I only hope you will try her well yourself and only keep her if she suits you perfectly.' He continues 'I have ridden her & driven her & tried her with a skirt & she goes perfectly quiet & well all ways. The mare has corns from which she goes tender at first starting but she is in all other respects quite sound…' Nolan further discusses his correspondent's current mare, which he suggests is sent to Tattersalls to be sold by auction, and the arrangements for delivering the new mare, which Nolan 'can send up to the London Bridge station any day you mention & you send your coachman to the station to ride her home.' Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG General Sir George Berkeley (1785-1857) British Soldier and Politician. Berkeley, a Colonel of the 35th Regiment and a General in the British Army served as the Duke of Wellington's liaison officer at the Prince of Orange's headquarters at the start of the Waterloo Campaign of 1815.

The partially printed document is a warrant issued to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs and appoints Thomas G. Cole to be a Principal Coast Officer at Sandwich in the port of Ramsgate. Signed by Wellington at the foot and countersigned by William Eliot, 2nd Earl of St Germans (1767-1845) British Diplomat & Politician, Lord of the Admiralty, and one other. With blank integral leaf. PROBYN DIGHTON: (1833-1924) English General, Victoria Cross winner for his numerous actions during the Indian Mutiny, 1857-58. Later Comptroller and Treasurer to King Edward VII when Prince of Wales 1877-91 and Extra Equerry to King Edward VII 1901-10. A.L.S., D. M. Probyn, two pages, 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 28th October 1889, to Messrs. Bath & Son. Probyn states that he has been sent a letter from his correspondents and asked to deal with it, further confirming acceptance of an estimate of £10.8.0 for repairing a Brougham carriage. With blank integral leaf. Together with a second A.L.S., D. M. Probyn, three pages, 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 24th November 1889, to Mr. Bath. Probyn states that he is pleased to hear that his correspondent has made a good job (‘You were right in putting new wheels to it’) and in a postscript, signed with his initial D, Probyn explains that Lord Suffield has been appointed Superintendent of the Stables and will write to Bath about a sleigh. MCCARTHY DOMINIC: (1892-1975) Australian Military officer, Victoria Cross winner for his actions near Madam Wood, East of Vermandovillers, France, on 23rd August 1918. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph of McCarthy standing outdoors in a three quarter length pose wearing an overcoat and military cap. Signed ('L. McCarthy V.C.') in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, adding the initials of the Australian Imperial Force and date 11th September 1919 in his hand beneath his signature. Laid down to a page contained in an autograph album, the opposite page again signed and inscribed by McCarthy in dark fountain pen ink, 'With tons of Love & Kisses to my own Darling Dob from the Great big Australian Victoria Cross Croix de Guerre avec Palm, L McCarthy VC, 16th Battn. A. I. F.'. Tape stains to the edges of each page, only slightly affecting the base of the photograph and not the signatures or inscription. The album also includes various verses and a few drawings etc., in the hands of family and friends of the collector. A few pages loose. Covers detached and lacking spine. A large 13 x 17.5 print depicting Haig seated in a half length pose wearing his military uniform and overcoat, the image by James Guthrie after a painting by James Bell Anderson, and issued for the benefit of The Earl Haig Fund by permission of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Signed ('Haig F.M.') by Haig in ink to the lower white border and also signed by Guthrie in pencil with his name alone to the lower border. ISMAY HASTINGS: (1887-1965) British Indian Army officer & Diplomat, served as Winston Churchill's Chief Military Assistant during World War II. Later the first Secretary General of NATO 1952-57. A good vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9.5 photograph, being a reproduction of the painting of Ismay by Oswald Birley, depicting the General seated in a half length pose in uniform at his desk. Signed in fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount, 'To Geoff Macnab, with my affectionate regards, Ismay'. Framed and glazed in the original dark brown leather presentation frame. 9 x 12 overall. T.L.S., Dwight D Eisenhower, one page, 4to, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 6th December 1966, to Chaplain Walter H. White, on Eisenhower's personal printed stationery. Eisenhower states that he is pleased to know that Dr. Daniel A. Poling will be honoured at a Testimonial Banquet 'in recognition of his years of dedicated service to people throughout the world' and continues to confirm that he will be happy to have his name listed as Honorary Co-Chairman of the banquet, although will not be able to attend. Eisenhower concludes 'Please convey to Dr. Poling my warm congratulations and to all those in attendance my best wishes for an enjoyable and profitable evening'. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, VG Dr. Daniel A. Poling - President of the World's Christian Endeavour Union.

HIMMLER HEINRICH: (1900-1945) German Nazi official of World War II, Reichsfuhrer of the SS. D.S., H. Himmler, one page, 4to, n.p., 23rd October 1943. The typed document, in German, is a memo addressed to SS Gruppenfuhrer von Herff and states, in full, 'As SS officers who are capable, should the need arise, of becoming higher SS and police officers, the names of SS Group Leaders Thomas and Jurs and SS Brigade Leaders Harm, Thier and, with strong reservations, Jaegy should be taken down. In regard to SS Group Leader Thomas, I ask that a detailed assessment again be sought from SS Group Leader Gebhardt. Is he once again stable enough to be of use in such a position? If he is stable and reasonable, he is of course fully fit for the position of a higher SS and police officer. There only needs to be a reasonably sure certainty that he won't deviate again'. Boldly signed in blue fountain pen ink by Himmler at the conclusion. With a number of blue and red indelible pencil annotations to the margins, some possibly in the hand of von Herff. Two file holes to the left edge and some extremely minor, light foxing, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Maximilian von Herff (1893-1945) German Army Officer and SS General of World War II. Knights Cross winner. von Herff served as Chief of Personal Staff to Himmler and in this capacity dealt with internal and financial SS matters.

Arsenal!, being an Official Souvenir edition published by Arsenal FC in commemoration of their 'Double' as Football League Champions and FA Cup winners, 1971, individually signed to the front free endpaper by twenty members of the Arsenal squad of 1970-71 including George Graham, Bob McNab, Bob Wilson, Sammy Nelson, Charlie George, George Armstrong, John Roberts, Peter Marinello, Peter Simpson, Pat Rice, Peter Storey, Frank McLintock, John Radford, Ray Kennedy, Bertie Mee (manager) etc. Neatly mounted (appropriately with red tape) to the inside front cover is a printed 8vo certificate issued with the book and presenting it to Dr. J. Crane 'in recognition of valuable services to the club during our greatest season', signed at the base by Denis Hill-Wood (chairman). Two further inside pages feature five neatly mounted original ticket stubs for various football matches including England vs. Wales 1973, England vs. Yugoslavia 1972 and the FA Cup Final 1971. An interesting association copy. Paper appears clean in exposed areas. Colour generally strong. The paper has been extended on both the left hand side and right hand side (and has the necessary additional paint work to complete the extension to the sheet). The addition to the right hand side is approx 2-3 mms wide, whereas the addition on the left hand side is approx 0.5cm wide. Evidence of some light cockelling but the work has not been examined out of the frame.

The larger variegated tulips - high cockelling along the top edge and lower edge. Subtle brown spot lower left hand side of tulips. Good colour. Lightly stained. The smaller variegated tulip work - more extensive cockelling across entire surface especially towards the outer edges . Light staining. Carnations- very light cockelling to the centre area, much cleaner in overall appearance. Good colour. Superficial scratches to paper/vellum to the right of the carnation and above one of the upper leaves on the left hand side. Iris - in comparable condition to the carnation work, surface flat and clean. Good colour.
