AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY ITALIAN BLUE AND YELLOW PAINTED TURNED WOODEN LAMP STANDARD the uplighter over twin light candle holders and on turned supports having two undertiers and standing on a tripod base, fitted with hand painted shade decorated with classical figures within a garden, approximately 118cm high overall
A SEVRES TREFOIL TRAY WITH SPURIOUS FACTORY MARK AND DATE, 18TH CENTURYof trefoil form with a pierced feather border, the turquoise center of the tray with a hand-painted medallion featuring a young peasant woman in a landscape, the medallion surrounded by a border of gilt foliate scrolls and rocailles, painted with a branch extending from the pierced border and into the medallion, similar branch on the verso, diameter: 21.3 cm (8 3/8 in.). LOT NOTESWhile variants of this pierced design were originally designed for Louis XV’s blue celeste service in the mid 18th century, the lone figure featured on the medallion, as well as the slightly different shade of turquoise used in the present example, suggests that this piece received its decoration somewhat after its initial production. The branch design on the center of the tray and on the base is noteworthy, as well. The restorer attempted to disguise a light hairline crack in the body by creating an additional decorative element in conversation with the subject of the medallion- a young woman in a landscape- by turning the crack into a tree branch.PROVENANCEChristie's New York, October 20, 2006, Lot 722 PLEASE NOTEIf you will be bidding live on auction day, please note that Session I of the Auction (Russian Fine & Decorative Art), starts at 10:00 AM New York Time and goes from Lot 1 through Lot 234.
