The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1957 Triumph 498cc TRW Military MotorcycleRegistration no. Q673 CPFFrame no. 26289RXEngine no. TRW26289X NADeveloped in the immediate post-WW2 years to fulfil British Government contracts for a new military motorcycle, the TRW followed the overall lines of Triumph's trend-setting parallel twins but with the simpler and more easily maintained side valves rather then the civilian models' overhead valves. In keeping with the military's requirements for robustness and simplicity, the TRW retained a rigid frame while featuring Triumph's telescopic front fork as used by many models across the range. When their service life came to an end, many were offered for sale on the civilian market by the Ministry of Defence. Tony East bought this TRW as a dismantled 'project', offered from MoD storage, at an auction in the mid-1980s for £700; amazingly, it turned out to be complete without so much as a single nut or bolt missing – even the tyres, tubes, panniers and light bulbs were all there. The tyres were wrapped in grease-proof paper and the frame was dipped in thick grease that Tony used a hair dryer to melt it so it could be removed. Safe to say it was a very dirty job indeed. As usual, Tony entrusted the restoration to Bryan Small, whose 1987 invoice for £1,765 is on file. When finished the TRW was featured in The Classic MotorCycle magazine's January 1993 edition (framed copy of article available). At time of cataloguing the Triumph had covered 1,112 miles. Additional documentation includes photocopied literature; some old MoTs; and a user handbook with this machine's engine number written in the front with the date 12th February 1958. One key present.Offered with keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1983 Honda CX650 TurboRegistration no. JBW 823YFrame no. RC16-2000218Engine no. RC16E-2001138• Imported from Italy• Amazing 'time-warp' condition• Only 6,177 kilometres recorded• New Bosch fuel pump'...the CX500T has all the good points of the 500T: the fairing and comfort, shaft drive and mega pose value for those who think biggest and flashiest is best. And whereas the 500 fell flat on its face when it came to performance, the 650 has little turbo lag, the ability to cruise all day at well over the ton, and most of all this amazing zappo when you hit the throttle hard.' – Bike magazine. Once Honda had bolted a turbocharger to one of the most unlikely models in its range - the CX500 v-twin - the rest of the Japanese 'Big Four' followed suit, their larger, four-cylinder offerings leaving the CX500 trailing far behind in the performance stakes. Honda's riposte was the 673cc CX650 Turbo, which arrived in 1983. Bike magazine found that, compared to the CX500, turbo lag had been almost eliminated, and clearly appreciated the bigger CX's ability to sustain an indicated 135mph while the rider sat in perfect ease behind the effective fairing. Fuel consumption varied from 25mpg (speed testing) to an impressive 45mpg if less use was made of the 18psi maximum boost available. One of the nicest example we have ever seen, this rare Honda CX650 Turbo was purchased in 2021 from The Bike Specialists, Sheffield for a considerable sum (the CX650 Turbo was the vendor's 'pin-up bike' when he was young). The Honda had been imported from Italy by the previous owner in 2017 (see documents on file relating to its purchase from Italy and the registration process together with a photocopied Italian title). Additional documentation includes a current V5C, DVLA MoT history, HPI check and (copy) previous V5C. The machine also comes with with two keys, tool kit, owner's manual and photocopied set-up instructions.Dissatisfied with how the machine ran, the vendor had the fuel pump replaced twice before settling on a new Bosch unit, which was fitted by Colwins Motorcycles of Sittingbourne. They employed a mechanic, trained in the 1980s on Hondas, who correctly installed the fuel pump at the same time as the current MoT certificate was issued in 2023 (receipts lost unfortunately). Recommissioned by the current owner, the Honda has seen little use since purchase; it starts and idles smoothly but may require further light recommissioning following a period of inactivity. The odometer reading of 6,177 kilometres is not warranted but appears to be genuine. Viewing of this incredible 'time-warp' CX650 Turbo is highly recommended.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Property of a deceased's estate1929 Harley-Davidson 45ci Model DRegistration no. BF 8437Frame no. 29D6777 (on plate)Engine no. 29D6777• Iconic Harley-Davidson model• Acquired in 2018• Corbin speedometerAlthough Harley-Davidson was no stranger to sidevalve ('flat head') engines, it did not apply this valve gear arrangement to a v-twin until the arrival of the all-new 45ci 'D' (standard) and 'DL' (high-compression) models in 1929. With the introduction of the Powerplus model in 1916, rivals Indian had demonstrated that a properly designed 'flat head' could produce all the power a road rider required, so it is perhaps surprising that Harley took so long to follow suit. One of the other advantages of this new engine was that it was cheaper to produce, enabling Harley to price the new 45ci (750cc) Model D at $290, and the 45's relative affordability would prove to be an important factor during the Depression years of the early 1930s. Production of the 45 really took off when the USA's entry into WW2 in December 1941 created an unprecedented demand for military motorcycles; around 90,000 of the WL (military) version rolling off the Milwaukee production lines before hostilities ceased. 'De-mobbed' Harley 45s helped meet the upsurge in demand for motorcycles in the immediate post-war years, doing much to establish the marque's reputation worldwide, while the civilian version remained a catalogued model until the end of 1951. This Vintage-era Model D was acquired by the current vendor's late father in 2018. A self-employed gas turbine engineer. Motorcycles were his passion and had been from a young age. He loved the look of this Model D, so much so, it stood proudly in the hallway. This Harley previously belonged to a Mr Nicholas Julian Moss of Berkshire. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The machine features a Corbin speedometer and comes with a small selection of spares to include a pair of pillion footrests, rear numberplate/light bracket, and assorted electrical wiring. Accompanying documents include a current V5C; Harley-Davidson spare parts manual and Rider's Hand Book; and a folder containing various invoices/bills, including for repair of the gearbox in 2019.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
c. 1945 James ML 125cc LightweightRegistration no. not registered (see text)Frame no. L27723Engine no. 539/32014The ML or 'Military Lightweight' was a machine developed for use in WW11 by the Ministry of Supply that then continued into civilian production after the war up until 1948. Known as the Clockwork Mouse, it used the venerable Villiers 125cc two stroke engine. This machine has the post-war longer mudguards and centre stand, though these could have been fitted later. Appearing largely complete and a good basis for light restoration it should be noted that despite displaying the VRN 'FRL 375' neither the frame or engine numbers match those to the HPI/DVLA database. Accordingly, the machine is offered unregistered and without documents.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1937 Triumph 350cc Tiger 80Registration no. HV 8121Frame no. TL 2248Engine no. 7-T80 3966Just as he had done at Ariel in the 1920s, Val Page transformed his employer's ageing range on his arrival at Triumph as Chief Designer in 1932. Endowed with distinctive timing-gear covers - a feature Page would employ later at BSA - the engines were simple yet robust in construction and amenable to a fair degree of tuning in the case of the overhead-valve units. Edward Turner's arrival at Triumph in 1936 resulted in extensive improvements to the range. A brilliant stylist, Turner transformed Page's overhead-valve singles by adopting sports specification engines, high level exhausts, chromed fuel tanks, and a new name: Tiger. Today, Turner's Tigers are widely recognised as the most stylish sports roadsters of the period and thus are highly sought after. This Tiger 80 was in its present restored condition when purchased by the vendor's late relative circa 1983. The odometer reading of 243 miles is assumed to be the distance covered since restoration. Showing some light pitting and early surface corrosion, the machine has remained unused for many years since acquisition. It is not known when it last ran. Recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before further use (the engine turns over, with compression). Sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with two RF.60 logbooks (issued 1952 and 1958), part old V5, current V5C, and DVLA correspondence.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Property of a deceased's estate1922 AJS 349cc Model B TouringRegistration no. FL 3274Frame no. 17530Engine no. 17530The first AJS of 1911 was a single-cylinder sidevalve-engined lightweight displacing 292cc. The company first entered the Isle of Man TT that year, making an historic breakthrough in 1914 when it won the Junior event, the first such victory by a single-cylinder machine. From then onwards, the 2¾hp (350cc) sidevalve model remained a fixture of the AJS range. Light in weight (around 200lbs), robust and adequately powerful, the model is widely regarded as one the finest of early Vintage sports machines. This Vintage-era AJS 'flat-tanker' was acquired by the current vendor's late father in 2013, having been restored from a total wreck by the previous owner. The latter obviously did a good job, as the machine was judged Best Wolverhampton AJS at the 2013 Jampot Rally. Used mostly on weekends at local Vintage club runs the annual Jampot Rally for many years. Noteworthy features include Lucas 'King of the Road' acetylene lighting and a bulb horn of unknown manufacture. Following a period of inactivity, the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent and thus is sold strictly as viewed (it should be noted that the right side rear toolbox/bag is missing. Accompanying documents include a current V5C; copy of previous-owner V5C; old V5; old RF.60 logbook (issued 1948); old MoTs and expired tax discs; photographs of the AJS and its previous owner; marque related literature; and correspondence from Rob Harknet (Pre-War Officer AJS & Matchless OC).Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1939 Bedford Light Van Registration no. JMT 796 Chassis no. HC3843 Engine no. H28106General Motors imported Chevrolet commercial vehicles into the UK during the 1920s before setting up domestic manufacture at Vauxhall's Luton plant under the 'Bedford' brand name in 1931. Chevrolet cabs were used initially but otherwise the first Bedfords were entirely new and successful to such an extent that the company coined the advertising slogan 'You See Them Everywhere'. Bedford's light commercial vans were, as one might expect, based on Vauxhall chassis and this example appears to be based on the Ten-Four saloon. The Bedford HC, a compact commercial vehicle, was manufactured by Bedford starting in 1938. It utilized the same mechanical components as the H-series Vauxhall 10-4 sedan. During World War II, civilian vehicle production ceased, but the HC van briefly resumed production after the war ended.Subsequently, the Bedford JC, a more robust model, took its place, only to be succeeded by the taller-roofed Bedford PC after the war. Purchased by John in 1973, invoices on file suggest the vehicle was last restored c.2012, Malcolm Collinson of Farnham entrusted with much of the work. Last taxed in January 2015 and presently SORN'd, the vehicle is offered with an old-style continuation logbook, V5C document, 1959 tax disc and a history file. The engine turns over with the assistance of a jump-start pack; however, no attempts have been made to start the vehicle. There is no radiator cap present and it should be noted the V5C incorrectly lists the chassis number as 'HC3343'. Sold strictly as viewed the vehicle will require recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1936 Harley-Davidson 74ci VLD 'Police'Registration no. 594 YUHFrame no. 36VLD4859 (See text)Engine no. 36VLD4859• First registered in the UK in 2012• Present family ownership since 2012• An older restoration• Requires recommissioningThe 'flat head' (sidevalve) Harley-Davidson VL 'Big Twin' was announced in July 1929 as a replacement for the inlet-over-exhaust 'pocket valve' twins that had been in production since 1911. The twin headlamps, round toolbox and Klaxon horn were carried over from its immediate predecessor, but nearly all of the rest of the bike was new. Harley's 1930 brochure described the new 74ci machine as 'standing head and shoulders above all comers, with such startling new features as a 20% more powerful motor with Ricardo removable heads, interchangeable wheels, bigger tires, drop-centre rims, lower riding position, greater road clearance, automatic increase of generator output, drop forged forks, 100% stronger frame, theft proof lock, dual front drive chain, improved clutch, and many other features making the 1930 Big Twin the greatest motorcycle value ever offered.' Despite its maker's evident enthusiasm, the model V was far from an instant success. More massively built and heavier than its predecessor, the V lacked top-end power to such an extent that the first examples were recalled for an extensive engine redesign. A larger crankcase accommodating heavier flywheels did the trick and, its problems solved, the 74ci 'flat head' went on to win the hearts of Harley enthusiasts everywhere. This example's 'VLD' nomenclature indicates that it left the factory as a generator-equipped model fitted with high-compression pistons. Imported by the previous owner (date unknown), the machine was first registered in the UK in 2012. It was in its current restored condition when purchased by the vendor's late relative that year, but has been unused for many years since. An older restoration, the Harley features painted cylinder heads; California Highway Patrol transfers to the tank; first aid box; fire extinguisher; crash bars; and a Corbyn 100mph speedometer, while there is some light surface corrosion to the brightwork. It is not known when the machine last ran, but it was last taxed to April 2013. Recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent will be required before it returns to the road (the engine turns over, with compression). Sold strictly as viewed, the machine is offered with a V5C document; expired MoT (2013); DVLA correspondence; and an AMCA 'Junior First' award (date unknown). It should be noted the frame number is not a factory Harley-Davidson stamp (Harleys of this period did not have frame numbers) and is believed to be a DVLA-issued VIN to facilitate its UK registration. Key in on/off switch.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1969 Laverda 750 GT 'American Eagle'Registration no. PFJ 320GFrame no. LAV750 1648Engine no. 750 1648•One of only some 150 made•First registered in the UK in 2021•Most collectible and sought after modelsShortly after the Laverda 750GT went on sale in Europe, McCormack International Motors Incorporated, a vehicle importing business, concluded a deal with the Italian factory to market the model in the USA under the 'American Eagle' brand name. Unfortunately for Jack McCormack, Laverda's 750 twins were soon upstaged by the four-cylinder Honda CB750, which was not only better specified but cheaper too, and only some 150 had been imported when McCormack went bust. With relatively few made and even fewer still in existence, the American Eagle is now one of Laverda's most collectible and sought after models. American Eagle is also famous as having kick-started Evel Knievel's career. The brand sponsored the American stunt rider, who wore a distinctive jumpsuit and cape with the American Eagle logo across the front of his leathers and on his helmet. He used a modified American Eagle 750 to complete several record-breaking jumps, suffering some spectacular crashes. Eventually Harley-Davidson realised the marketing potential and provided Knievel with a Harley-Davidson XR750 for his jumps. This very early US-market American Eagle 750 GT was first registered in the UK on 1st September 2021 and has had one former keeper in this country. Its history in the USA is unknown. There is a video of the machine running, available to view on the Bonhams website. The machine is offered with sundry invoices; photocopied technical literature; suspension instructions; owner's manual/parts list; repair guide; copy online advertisement; and a current V5C document. A 4' round brake light lamp lens is included in the sale.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Property of a deceased's estate1921 Levis 250cc LightweightRegistration no. EE 2744Frame no. 7084Engine no. 9567Manufactured in Birmingham, the Levis motorcycle derived its name for the Latin word for 'light', which was one of the diminutive machine's many virtues. One of the pioneers of the two-stroke motorcycle, the firm commenced manufacture of its 211cc, single-gear lightweight in 1911. Soon dubbed 'Popular', the Lightweight model was a huge success for the Birmingham marque, remaining in production until 1926, latterly alongside a 250cc model. This Levis 250cc Lightweight comes with a purchase receipt recording its sale by James Plastow, Cycle and Motor Engineer of Grimsby to a Mr Davies on 17th August 1920 (frame and engine numbers transposed). The registration 'EE 2744' is a Grimsby mark, and the machine also comes with a (copy) old-style logbook registering the machine in July 1927 to one D Canty of nearby Barton-upon-Humber. There are four late 1920s tax discs on file also. Interestingly, the current V5C records the previous keeper (from September 1987) as John Canty, also of Barton-upon-Humber, so presumably of the same family. The Levis has belonged to the current vendor's late father since 2014. No other history is known. The machine will require re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent following a period of inactivity and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Additional paperwork includes DVLA correspondence; copy old V5; various invoices/bills; and a photocopied Senspray carburettor manual.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1925 Scott 498cc Three Speed Super SquirrelRegistration no. XX 3453 (see text)Frame no. 364 (see text)Engine no. Y7803• Well known bike in Scott circles• Only three owners in 98 years• Wonderful & extensive history fileBeing substantially easier to ride in traffic than a two speeder of the same era, and much lighter than the later duplex framed 'Flyers', Scott's Three Speed Super Squirrel has become increasingly sought after in recent times. This example's history is well documented. In addition to the V5C and a continuation buff logbook, it comes with a substantial history file including magazine articles about this very bike, period photographs, original bill of sale, factory engine and road test certificates, etc. Well known Scott enthusiast Glyn Chambers acquired the bike in 1979 following the death of the original owner. Glyn's notebook (included) records that the Scott was run with a different engine from 1986 until 2017 when he installed the overhauled original engine no. Y7803, now with a 498cc top end. During Glyn's ownership the bike was used extensively, and it became well known in Scott circles. Sadly his health began to deteriorate, and in June 2021 he sold it to the vendor who embarked on a comprehensive rebuild. Due to his own health issues the vendor is now unable to ride, but on completion he had a friend ride it for a brief road test. The vendor's account of the rebuild and the road test report are supplied. Various items were not re-fitted to the bike, and are supplied separately: rear carrier, acetylene headlamp (with brackets) and tail-light, additional electric rear light, horn, decompression bar and valves, also a 600cc block, two pistons, two conrods etc.It should be noted that both the continuation logbook and V5C display 364 as the frame number. According to his notebook, in December 1994 Glyn scraped the frame, and 393 was revealed. Ian Parsons, the current Club Registrar, confirms that the Scott factory had several frame number sequences: thus other Scott models could have the same frame number as a 3 speed Super. A letter dated 9.1.1995 from the late John Underhill (then Scott Owners Club Registrar) to Glyn confirms that 393 does not appear in the factory despatch records for a Three Speed Super. Ian Parsons suggests that the most likely reason for this discrepancy is that a replacement frame was fitted back in the day, but that the change of frame number was not notified to the authorities. Following the correspondence with John Underhill, Glyn fitted a removable plaque bearing 364 above the stamped 393. Accordingly prospective bidders must satisfy themselves as to the validity of the vehicle's registration number prior to bidding.Few miles have been covered since the rebuild, therefore the engine will need running in, and the usual 'shaking down' will be required. It should be noted that there is a small weep from the radiator. Prospective bidders should satisfy themselves as to the motorcycle's completeness and mechanical condition prior to bidding. It is sold strictly as viewed. No keys are required or supplied.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1959 Velocette 200cc LE MkIIIRegistration no. 4357 POFrame no. 2456/34Engine no. 2456/3Launched in 1948, as the 'motorcycle for everyman', the Velocette LE addressed the criticisms most often levelled at motorcycles - that they were noisy, dirty and needed special clothing to ride - achieving impressive levels of silence, comfort and practicality. This LE is an example of the MkIII which was introduced for 1959, its principal improvement being a four-speed, foot-change gearbox with kick-starter. In addition, the speedometer, ammeter and light switch were moved from the leg shield to the headlamp shell. The Velo comes with an old-style buff logbook recording the date of first registration as 1st August 1959 and first owner as Frederick Thomas Sapping Haslemere, who kept it until May 1966. (As is so often the case, the V5 incorrectly lists the previous owner as the first keeper.) Tony East purchased the machine in 1987, and in 1989 it took part in the LE Velo Club's annual rally at Stanford Hall. An older restoration, the LE was last taxed to 31st July 2002 and had 7,799 miles showing on the odometer at time of cataloguing. The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1938 Triumph 498cc Speed TwinRegistration no. BCR 960Frame no. TH.4200Engine no. 8-5T 9338•Important landmark of motorcycle design•Acquired by Tony East in February 1996•Restored condition•Last taxed in July 2015Although Edward Turner's Triumph Speed Twin caused a sensation when it appeared at the 1937 Motorcycle Show, few of its admirers can have guessed how influential the design would prove to be. True, there had been vertical twins before; indeed, Turner's predecessor at Triumph - Val Page - had designed one a few years previously, but Triumph's newcomer established a formula that would be adopted by all of Britain's major motorcycle manufacturers in the succeeding decade. Light, narrow and from certain angles looking just like a twin-port single, it was just what the conservatively minded motorcycling public wanted and the Speed Twin would prove enormously successful. Performance was exemplary for a road-going 500, around 85mph being attainable by the Speed Twin while the Tiger 100 sports version was even faster, being capable of touching 100mph in road trim and exceeding it with the silencer end-caps removed. When production resumed in 1946, the Speed Twin reappeared with telescopic forks in place of the original girders, and separate dynamo and magneto instead of the pre-war version's magdyno. This pre-war Speed Twin comes with a continuation buff logbook dating from 1946 describing it as a '5T Special Twin' and listing five recorded keepers, the last of whom, a Mr Kirby of Staines, sold the machine to Tony East in February 1996. Restored throughout, The Triumph has been ridden extensively throughout France and Germany and currently displays a total of 1,859 miles on the odometer. In 2007 the Triumph took part in the VMCC Isle of Man TT re-enactment, being ridden by Mick Grant, the bike 'never missed a beat'. Last taxed until July 2015, the accompanying paperwork includes a 1939 replacement parts catalogue; instruction manual; the original 1938 tax disc and others, mainly from the 1940s; a quantity of restoration invoices dating from 1996; old/current V5/V5C documents; some expired MoTs; and restorer Bryan Small's invoice for £6,819.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection1937 Triumph 598cc Model 6SRegistration no. CDU 396Frame no. TH.757Engine no. 7-6S 10261C (see text)• Original purchase invoice from 1937 on file• Purchased by Tony East in 1997• Restored throughoutJust as he had done at Ariel in the 1920s, Val Page transformed Triumph's ageing range on his arrival as Chief Designer in 1932. The new line-up comprised overhead- and sidevalve-engined singles in capacities ranging from 250 to 500cc, plus the range-topping 650cc 6/1 sidecar tug. Introduced for 1937 and intended for sidecar use, the 598cc sidevalve-engined Model 6S followed the successful pattern already laid down and continued substantially unchanged until the outbreak of WW2. The 6S was not produced after WW2 and only three are recorded in the VMCC's Register of Machines. This rare Triumph 6S comes with the original purchase invoice dating from 1st January 1937 recording its sale by W Lole & Son in Coventry to a Mr Whitbread. The Triumph cost £61 3s 6d and came with sidecar fittings, speedometer, carrier, stop-light, and pillion footrests (it should be noted that the engine number is recorded as '7-6S-1833'). Tony East purchased the Triumph in 1997. Restored throughout and very well presented, the machine was last taxed to 31st May 2012 and currently displays a total of 372 miles on the odometer. c.1926 New Imperial 300cc Model 2Registration no. UH 2231Frame no. D16646Engine no. B4155Builder of the last British-made machine to win the Lightweight 250 TT (in 1936) New Imperial was unsurpassed for innovation during the 1930s, with models featuring pivoted fork rear suspension and unitary construction of engine and gearbox. The marque was established in 1900 when Norman Downs acquired a cycle company in Birmingham, which he reorganised as New Imperial Cycles. The firm's first motorcycles, designed along Werner lines, were shown at the 1901 Stanley Show in London but were not well received. Not until 1910 did Downs try again, launching a conventional JAP-powered model - the Light Tourist - that would prove an outstanding success. In racing, New Imperial concentrated on the 250 class, winning the Isle of Man TT trophy for 250cc machines in 1921 and their first Lightweight TT in 1924, a feat repeated the following year. On the commercial front, the late 1920s saw production facilities expand and proprietary engines abandoned in favour of New Imperial's own power units.Apparently a Model 2 '350' fitted with a 300cc engine from a Model 1, this Vintage-era New Imperial was acquired by the vendor's late father, prominent collector Ken Senior, in August 2008. An older restoration that deserves further renovation, 'UH 2231' will require recommissioning before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The machine is offered with old-style V5/V5C documents.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Property of a deceased's estate 1931 Scott 596cc Flying SquirrelRegistration no. OG 8921Frame no. 8Engine no. FY3466A• VMCC local section multiple award winner• Long-term family ownership (1956 onwards)• Restored in the early 1990s• Regular participant in local VMCC runs• Last on the road circa 2005This stunning, award-winning Scott Flying Squirrel was purchased by the vendor's late father in 1956. After getting married in 1961, with a house to renovate and children on the horizon, he took the Scott off the road and tucked it away for over 30 years. In 1989, the owner began a restoration and by 1992 the Scott had been lovingly restored to prize-winning condition. The addition of a brake light was a sensible concession to modern traffic conditions.Through the 1990s, its late owner and the Scott were well known regulars at Scott Owners Club and VMCC meetings and runs throughout the Midlands, winning many cups and trophies. These include the VMCC 1999 Levis Cup Road Trial (winner of the Time Keeper's Trophy); VMCC 1994 Coventry Parade (Best Scott and Most Desirable Scott); and the VMCC 2000 Coventry Parade (Best Scott). By the late 1990s the Flying Squirrel was sharing garage space with a Silk Scott, and a Silk 700S - the owner was clearly a true dyed-in-the-wool Scott enthusiast. In the early 2000s, the owner hung up his leathers and took to three wheels in the form of a JZR trike. Last on the road circa 2005, the Scott was kept safe and secure, stored in a dry and heated garage. Before he passed away, the owner made sure the vendor was made aware of the Scott's specification and important technical details such as the frame being a single downtube which was derived from the sprint special and is fitted with Brampton Monarch bottom link forks. The engine is a 596cc short stroke and is believed to have been fitted with Roger Moss high strength cranks, main bearing, and big ends (see documentation on file). Our vendor describes the Scott as in lovely condition overall, although following a period of inactivity the machine will require recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before it can 'Yowl' once more. Sold strictly as viewed, 'OG 8921' comes with a most substantial file of documentation (inspection highly recommended) to include an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1954); V5/V5C registration documents; expired tax discs and MoT certificates; various invoices/bills; aforementioned Moss Engineering documentation; pre- and post-restoration photographs; various VMCC and Scott Owners Club correspondence; VMCC competitor numberplates and events programmes: Scott brochures: and plenty of useful Scott related literature.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a renowned French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionist movement. He was born in Paris and developed a passion for art at a young age. Monet is best known for his landscape and outdoor scenes, particularly his series of paintings depicting water lilies, haystacks, and the Rouen Cathedral. Monet's style was characterized by his innovative use of light and color, capturing the transient and atmospheric effects of nature. This approach, along with his loose brushwork and emphasis on capturing the essence of a scene rather than precise details, was highly influential and marked a departure from the more traditional artistic conventions of his time. He often painted en plein air, working directly from nature to capture the changing qualities of light and atmosphere. This approach, along with his loose brushwork and emphasis on capturing the essence of a scene rather than precise details, was highly influential and marked a departure from the more traditional artistic conventions of his time. Monet's most famous works include "Impression, Sunrise" (which inspired the name of the Impressionist movement), "Water Lilies," "Haystacks," "Rouen Cathedral Series," and "Japanese Bridge." His art had a profound impact on the development of modern art and continues to be celebrated for its beauty and innovative approach. Monet's paintings are widely exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and his legacy as one of the greatest painters of all time remains influential to this day.
