L.I.) disc only with pin fitting soldered to reverse for wear as a brooch, records show Private Louis Campbell of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry enlisted on 20th July 1898 at Sheffield, having already served for a period of time in the Militia, a bit of a 'character' to say the least, at various times losing rank, forfeiting Good Conduct Badges and being confined for 'when on active service using insubordinate language to his superior officer' on 8/3/01, appears to have had a problem with urinating in inappropriate places in the barracks when drunk, served in the South African War from 1899-1902, admitted to hospital on several occasions to be treated for gonorrhoea, discharged to the reserve 1910, mobilized 5th August 1914, wounded in action (gunshot wound testicles) October 1914, awarded 7 days Field Punishment No.1 March 1915 then 28 days F.P. No1 on 31st March 1915 (must have really upset the C.O.!) gunshot wound left leg May 1915, entered France on 1st October 1914 and entitled to the 1914 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal, and Victory Medal, discharged 24th November 1915

Gen. John Richard Anderson CB, born in 1821 records show he served in the 1st Opium War in China in 1842 at the Battle of Chinkiang and subsequent operations including the demonstration before Nanking. Souvenir/battlefield pick up from the Crimean War, Imperial Russian 1848 Pattern Infantry Helmet, the helmet is in a battered condition with the front and back peaks, and chin chain missing, interestingly it has two helmet plates attached whereas it should only have one at the front, presumably this was done by whoever brought it back from the Crimea for display as a souvenir, the front helmet plate, which is the correct one, belongs to the 26th Belostock Infantry Regiment which formed part of the garrison of Sebastopol, the plate fixed to the back of the helmet is missing the white metal regimental numerals, one of two metal rosettes still present to the side of the helmet, when Sebastopol was evacuated by the Russians many of the 26th regiments helmets were found in storage and seized as souvenirs by the Allied troops when they occupied it, the helmet has an old label attached inscribed 'Russian Helmet from Crimean War 1854-55', this item is part of a grouping belonging to Major General William Cochrane Anderson R.A. 1794-1865, and is believed to have been brought back from the Crimea by a member of the Generals family, (additional information from the vendor has allowed us surmise that the most likely member of William Cochrane Andersons family to have brought the items home from his campaigns is his eldest son Maj.
