Lot 83

Novohispanic School. Mexico. 17th - 18th Century."Apparition of the Virgin and her Son to St. Dominic de Guzman and St. Louis Bishop of Toulouse."Oil on canvas.145,5 x 106 cm.Precious, delicate and very fine execution of the meeting of the Mother of God and her Son with two of her saints who defend her dogma: Saint Dominic of Guzman receiving "the Rosary or crown of roses" that he ordered her to pray (for the Church of that time - 13th century - they were the 150 psalms of David, which were later replaced by 150 Hail Marys; and Saint Louis Bishop of Toulouse, Prince of Anjou and heir to the Crown of Naples, who was a Franciscan friar and defender of the holy places where Jesus and his mother the Blessed Virgin lived. What Mary and Christ child tell them are "floral metaphors of late medieval Marian iconography, in the light of patristic and theological sources".Exactly: "Rosa vernans charitatis, lilium virginitatis..." (...stella fulgens, Maria, Ora pro nobis Dominum" - what follows and is understood), lyrics from the Codex de Chantilly MS 564, made as a motet for Gregory XI, well known in medieval musical art.A painting made to promote the customs and practices of veneration towards the Virgin Mary, encouraged by the Council of Trent between 1545 and 1563, when a revival of religious life was also generated in the Catholic Church, the Dominicans and the Franciscans, both present in the painting.

Lot 82

Vicerregal School. Cuzco. Peru. 18th century.“Our Lady Immaculate and Pure, with some of the Litanies of Loreto"Oil on canvas.179,5 x 130,5 cm.It has not been possible to attribute this painting to a particular artist, but it is undoubtedly the work of a master.  One only has observe the beauty of the Virgin Mary's face and the portraits of the saints at her feet. This is a spectacular Cuzco canvas representing the Immaculate Virgin Mary ascending to the heavens on a half-moon and stamping on evil, amidst a choir of angels that display some of the names, invocations, or honorary titles given by the holy Fathers, extolling her dignity. With them, her person is honoured and her powerful intercession is invoked.Below, Saint Peter and Saint Anthony of Padua are in prayer.  These were possibly the saint names of the donors who commissioned the painting.Surrounding Mary are some of the litanies of the Blessed Virgin Mary.On the left, above: MYSTICAL ROSE: ("...like a plant of roses in Jericho," Ecclesiasticus 24:14. Mary is the rose of Jericho that had primacy over the others for its magnificence, its rare form, and its exquisite scent; and the rose bushes grew like trees.) MIRROR OF JUSTICE: ("She is a mirror of the eternal light, a spotless mirror of God's activity, an image of His goodness," Wisdom 7:26. Justice here is almost equivalent to the word holiness, of perfection, and supernatural goodness.)In the arms of an angel, a TREE, a CEDAR, "I have grown as a cedar in Lebanon" (Ecclesiasticus 24:17). The incorruptible cedar is a symbol of chastity. "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots, a Branch will bear fruit" (Isaiah 11:1).GATE OF HEAVEN ("And he was afraid and said, 'How dreadful is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!'" Genesis 28:17. Because it was through her that Our Lord Jesus Christ passed from Heaven to earth). On the right, another tree, THE OLIVE: "...like a beautiful olive tree in the fields" (Ecclesiasticus 24:14).Below,TOWER OF DAVID ("Your neck is like the tower of David, built with elegance" Song of Songs 4:4. A strong and beautiful construction that rose above the peak of a mountain built by King David for the defence of the city of Jerusalem. The Blessed Virgin Mary who rises sublime above the summit of all beauty and perfection, for the defence of the holy Church of God, the mystical Jerusalem.) FOUNTAIN: ("Fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon" Song of Songs 4:15).Upper right:LILIES OF THE FIELD ("Like a lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters" Song of Songs 2:2).Below, the PALM TREE, or patient palm in pain ("I have grown tall like a palm tree") Ecclesiasticus 24:14. Mary evokes the palm branches of Jesus' triumph in Jerusalem (John 12:13), a foreshadowing of his triumph with all the elect ("There was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb" Revelation 7:9). The palm, a sign of a victory achieved through perseverance in the struggle and enduring pain with fortitude, steadfastly, like Mary at the foot of the Cross.HOUSE OF GOLD, (the most beautiful of all metals, the one with the most value, because its virtues and purity have a transcendental brilliance and a dazzling perfection, are like an admirable work made of the purest gold.)And the 4th tree, CYPRESS: "...like a cypress on the mountains of Hermon" (Ecclesiasticus 24:13).Below,THE WELL: "...a well of living waters" Song of Songs 4:15. and TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?" 1 Corinthians 6:19.This lot is imported and therefore has a guaranteed export license from the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Follower of Joachim Patinir (Dinant, Belgium, circa 1480 - Antwerp, 1524). XVI - XVII century."Landscape with St. Christopher and Child."Oil on panel.29 x 40,5 cm.It has two handwritten collection numbers in the lower right margin: "44385" and "402".We see the clear influence of Patinir in the importance of the landscape in the scene, where the theme, as the Prado explains to us that also happens with the master, ends up being "a mere pretext to develop the landscape that becomes the main protagonist" of the composition. In fact, the Prado Museum, which is the institution that owns most of his work and which dedicated its first monographic exhibition to him in 2007, highlights Patinir's characteristic broad landscapes, which "present high horizons with extensive countryside in which massifs of pointed rocks stand out, of a fantastic character, mixing the real and the symbolic", characteristics that we also find in the painting we present here.We also recognize in our oil painting "a magnificent study of light and shadows [and] an excellent handling of color in which the delightful range of blues and greens stands out", properties that define Joachim Patinir, who was generously praised by his contemporaries and who "anticipates the great Dutch masters of the 17th century", states the Prado, and develops with great creativity and mastery of execution "a poetic imagination that allows him to express an idealized or pathetic world with deep feeling".With the same theme, we find a panel by Patinir made around 1521 in Antwerp, in his last period, a few years before his death. Today it is exhibited in the Galería de las Colecciones Reales in Madrid (inv. 10014400). This beautiful work, which has more fantastic and symbolic elements than ours, some influenced by Bosch and others from Patinir's own imagination, is similar to our painting, not only because of the iconographic episode captured, but also because of the majesty of the landscape and the solitude of nature reflected in the scenes, in line with the idea of retreat and spiritual rest, as Carmen García-Frías Checa states in her file on the painting for the museum.St. Christopher, the "Cristoforo", related to the symbolism of the bearer, since etymologically it means "the one who carries Christ", is considered the patron saint of travelers, walkers, muleteers, boatmen, sailors, carriers, athletes, drivers, pilots and aviators. His devotion had a great boom after the Middle Ages.As Luis Monreal illustrates in his "Iconography of Christianity", he was a martyr in Lycia during the persecution of Decius. Although there is confusing information about him, his historical existence is certain and surrounded by legends that gave him great popularity. He is presented as a giant of Canaanite origin and it is said that he belonged to the race of the cinocephalans, which evolved and took on a human appearance. Its best-known image is the one presented in our painting as in the one we also analyzed, preserved in the Gallery of the Royal Collections: St. Christopher carrying the Child Jesus on his shoulders, crossing a river with difficulty, in a stooped attitude due to the heavy load of Jesus, who in turn carries the sphere of the world and using the saint a tree trunk as a staff, which sometimes is an entire palm tree, "because according to legend it put leaves and bore fruit".Often, as is also the case in both paintings, a hermitage is shown in the landscape, with a hermit guiding the saint with a lantern, assisting the miraculous transport from the other shore. As a curiosity, a peculiar representation of the saint shows him as a cinocephalus, that is, with a dog's head, similar to the Egyptian god Anubis.Reference bibliography:- Monreal y Tejada, Luis (2000).
