(Light creasing to the folding plate, slight offsetting to the map). Contemporary diced calf (rebacked, modern endpapers). Note: Gideon Mantell (1790-1852) is now known for pioneering the scientific study of dinosaurs. The present work remains one of his best known and may be considered an important early milestone in the study of modern geology and palaeontology. Provenance: The Library Collection of the Late W. Engraved throughout, 20 sheets with a total of 124 uncoloured aquatint views (10 sheets with 4 views; 2 with 6; 5 with 8; 2 with 10 and 1 with 12 oval views), the majority by James Rouse, but including two sheets with 8 views by Elizabeth Rouse. (Some light soiling, occasional small tears.) Modern half-morocco, gilt title label on the upper cover. Note: scarce, as the series title suggests, the intention was that these should be cut up and pasted into albums, or used as models to be copied as a drawing exercise.
