Burns (Robert, 1759-1796). 'Burns' Bible. Bible used by the Poet Burns during his last illness at Brow-Well' [so captioned on box], a highly defective double-column pocket bible in roman type, without title-page, many leaves missing or defective, the whole heavily frayed with loss at all margins, and loose in old limp calf, cracked and torn with some loss, later paper sticker with numeral '109' to upper cover, small 8vo (13 x 17 cm), preserved in a purpose-made velvet-lined blue morocco box, lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed, 15 x 9 x 7 cm (Qty: 1)NOTESProvenance: Bonhams, London, 20 August 2009, lot 636https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/17232/lot/636/Please note that the accompanying items of documentation referred to in the Bonhams description are not included with the lot, these having been mislaid during the intervening years.'Bible said to have been used by Burns. It is a small pocket copy in an extremely dilapidated condition, according to tradition it is the one used by the Poet during the last weeks of his life... the volume was brought to light by the intelligent father of its present owner, the late Mr. Scott, schoolmaster of Clarencefield, near Brow' (quoted in Relics of Burns: Upwards of a Hundred in Number , the catalogue to the Bazaar held by the Dumfries Burns Statue Fund, 14-16 September, 1880). In a newspaper article of 1893 (not included with the lot), it was noted that 'Councillor Andrew Lawson [chairman of the Burns Howff Club, Dumfries] has become the possessor of a Bible which would appear to be a genuine relic of the poet Burns. At the time Burns was staying at the Brow Well he used the Bible, which he took with him when he went there to try and recruit his health, and when he returned to Dumfries he left it with a Mr Davidson or Mrs Burnie, and then a Mr. Scott, a schoolmaster in the parish…', mentioning that Lawson purchased it from a relative of Scott (whose son, a fishmonger, had lent it to the Dumfries exhibition). It was then exhibited at the Burns Exhibition in Glasgow in 1896.
