Published by the Fine Art Society 148, New Bond Street, London, 1879, 18.7x25cm Provenance: exhibited at Goldsmiths' Gallery, London, 'Graham Sutherland Exhibition', according to label attached to the reverse Provenance: From the art collection at the former St Gabriel's College, Camberwell. St Gabriel's was a Church of England teacher training college, founded in 1899 and closed in 1978. Its Art Department attracted talented teachers and artists whose vocation was to inspire young teachers through studying and imitating the work of great artists. The paintings and drawings in this collection were collected by the College's staff through donations and purchases during the interwar and post-war periods. After the College's closure, the collection was transferred to the ownership of an educational trust and until recently loaned to Goldsmith's University of London. CONDITION REPORT: mounted in a glazed wooden frame bearing label for Goldsmiths Gallery on the backing boards' reverse inspection out of the frame: the back mount card has been stuck down with tape along each edge to the window mount the print has become loose from its upper hinge mount from the reverse the sheet is browned throughout from a previous mount bearing remnants of parcel tape along all edges of the sheet with large brown spotting throughout there is an irregular line of the original sheet colour where the paper has not discoloured there is an area of green discolouration in the lower left corner recto: the sheet is browned from a previous mount in a rectangular shape extending to approx 1cm around the plate edge with a tear in the top left corner of the sheet approx. 1.5cm in length with two circular marks of discolouration in the top left corner with a horizontal crease 1cm from the top edge of the sheet running across from left to right with a green area of discolouration in the lower right corner with an irregular line of the original sheet colour running from the lower right edge of the plate to the level of the cows horn on the right this line divides two sections of discolouration, the top section being darker than the lower section there is a small circular area of original sheet colour 5mm dia. outside the plate mark in the top central margin bearing pencil inscription in the lower left corner of the sheet '2nd published state /7357' and in the lower right corner of the sheet 'SX' the sheet is slightly ruckled throughout overall in fair-good condition
