Kenneth Armitage RA CBE, British 1916-2002- "Richmond Oaks"; etching, signed, numbered 1/30 and dated 1977 in pencil, 30x37.5cm, (unframed) (may be subject to Droit de Suite) Note: Between 1975 and 1986 Armitage moved from the figure to nature, and became fascinated with the oak trees in Richmond Park. As he recalled in an interview with John McEwen in 1991:- "One day in 1975, in the spring, I suddenly saw them... and everywhere I looked it was a revelation, the trees were alive... And from then on I was hooked absolutely, and I went usually about three times a week, sometimes early in the morning, as early as I could get there before the gates were open. There was a little wicket-gate I found, you could park outside and go through the wicket-gate, and no one inside. You would see foxes sometimes, deer of course, and I had the place to myself. And I took sketch-books and eventually etchings on the spot. And it made me very happy to be there"
