Sir Hubert Herkomer (1849-1914) "A Talk on Old Times" signed lower left "H Herkomer / 1879" oil on canvas 78 x 62cm (30 x 24in) Hubert von Herkomer attended the South Kensington art school in 1866 and 1867 before he settled in London in 1868. In 1871 he was appointed to the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours and several exhibitions followed. In 1880 he was a co-founding member of the ‘Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers‘ aiming to establish etching and engraving as approved art forms. Von Herkomer has paintings in several British collections including the Manchester Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Oldham Gallery, Derby Art Gallery and the City of London. The largest collection of his work is held by Bushey Museum, and some is in the Herkomer Museum, Landsberg am Lech, Germany CG 659 - old Chrstie's stencil to the reverse. Perhaps a little dirty. Craquelure overall.
JOHN GEORGE MATHIESON, (British, 20th Century), landscape with pines and distant estuary with castle above, signed in pencil, uncoloured etching. 25 x 35cm, together with another John MacDonald Aiken (British, 1880-1961), scots pines in a heathland landscape, signed in pencil and numbered: 16, uncoloured etching. 20 x 34cm. (2) CONDITION REPORT: Both appearing in good original condition, odd minor foxing spot.
UNATTRIBUTED; a mid 20th century black and white etching depicting a labourer leaning on his spade with further figures in the background, bearing monogrammed initials HA within the print and indistinctly inscribed in pencil to the mount, dated 1945, the image 32.5 x 25.5cm, framed and glazed.
A continental Impressionistic style lanscape oil on canvas, titled "En La Sierra" and dated 1923 to reverse, signed, possibly Russian artist, approx 37cm by 45cm, together with a dry point etching of the head of Christ, signed Robinson, and a larger dry point etching by Turner dated 1926 in the Surrealist style (3)
