*Sylvia Gosse (1881-1968) etching - Sir Edmund Gosse in his study, signed in pencil 15cm x 18cm, mounted in glazed frame. Provenance: By descent from Douglas Shepherd (1922-1989), a designer and architect working on public houses for the brewery firm Ind Coope. He was heavily influenced by and was a serious collector of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including leading designers and artists such as Charles Ashlee and Jessie M King. He assembled a large collection from the 1950s to 1970s. His book collection was subsequently sold through Sotherby’s and in 2013 his magnificent silver collection by Archibald Knox and others was sold through these rooms.The work has not been stuck down but as you can see from the images has suffered with foxing and staining.

The print has been trimmed to the plate mark. The surface is a little cockled and there are some handling creases and time staining. The paper seems sound and there do not appear to be any signs of foxing beyond a small imperfection to the lower left margin. Please see additional close ups on our website.

There are handling creases and acid discolouration to the paper. The paper is secured by tabs to the top edge. The print appears to be the 4th of 5 states, suggesting it dates from 1639.
