Image size 41.5x32 cm (16¼x12½"), plus margins. Matted and framed, overall 70x60 cm (27½x23½"). Signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin. William Charles Frederick Gillam (1867-1964) was born in Brighton, England. He worked in England and Vancouver, British Columbia before arriving in northern California in 1921. He was active in the San Francisco Bay area until the early 1940s. Gillam died in Sonoma County, California on February 10, 1962. He was a member of the California Society of Etchers; Palo Alto Art Club; Berkeley League of Fine Arts, etc. A copy of this etching is in the collection of the DeYoung Museum, San Francisco. Not examined out of frame, appears fine or nearly so. Not archivally framed.

Provenance: The estate of Aaron Sopher, Baltimore artist and associate of Max Beckmann and George Grosz. Max Beckmann (German, 1884-1950) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Beckmann achieved great success during the years of the Weimar Republic but his fortunes changed with the rise to power of the Third Reich. His work was considered degenerate by Adolph Hitler and Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching position at the Art School in Frankfurt. He left Germany for the Netherlands and later the United States. A bit toned overall, matte-burn; very good.

John Stoll (German-American 1889-1974) studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Dresden and settled in San Francisco in 1915. Perhaps best known for his maritime scenes and for his murals at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island and for the Sailors Union in the Pacific Building, San Francisco. Fine.
