Piers Browne, 'Is my Team Ploughing', signed, numbered 41/65, etching, 19 x 12cm (Pl), 36 x 28.5cm framed Piers Browne is a British contemporary artist based in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. He was born in Shropshire and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London where he found inspiration under the tutelage of Maurice de Saumarez and Diana Armfield. He then attended the Royal Academy Schools 1972-1972 where he won the David Murray Landscape Prize in both 1974 and 1975, and was taught printmaking at Islington Studio under Hugh Stoneman. Browne spent some time travelling through Europe and Central Africa whilst painting and eventually settled in Yorkshire. He has had over 75 one man exhibitions across the UK, Iceland, USA and in Germany and was a member of the Askrigg Group for 20 years. Browne is renowned as a printmaker, working extensively in oils and as an etcher.

He was born in Macclesfield and spent much of his early life working on his family's farm before attending the Macclesfield School of Art, winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London shortly after. Following the completion of his studies he relocated to Anglesea in 1947 where he remained for the rest of his life. His used a variety of mediums in his work inlcuding watercolour, etching, engraving and oil. Tunnicliffe is recognised for his accurate and naturalistic portrayal of animals and birds and the lively way he represented his subjects engaging with their surrounding habitats. He was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Academy, but released very few of his works for gallery sale, believing his art was best suited to private homes. He was well known as a book illustrator, particularly his work for Ladybird books, and he had a long relationship with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for whom he illustrated many magazine covers and who awarded him a Gold Medal for his service in 1978. Tunnicliffe rejected the modern urban art scene of his time in favour of immersing himself within the natural world, insisting upon painting studies direct from nature.

Anthony Gross CBE(1905-1984) British 20th Century, 'Saturday Night at Richmond Yorkshire in 1940', print numbered 10/50, signed bottom right, mounted and framed. Measurements 16.2 x 26cm (PL), framed measurements 40 x 52.5 cm Anthony Gross (1905-1984) was a British etcher and painter, born in London. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. He was taught etching under Jozef Hecht and was a lifelong friend of Stanley William Hayter. During World War Two he was appointed as an official war artist which saw him create depictions of English coastal defences and training grounds as well as being posted to the front lines of India and Burma, and was present at D-Day. His style is characterised by the use of variegated marks to express tone and texture rather than cross-hatching. Post-war, Gross divided his time between London and le Boulve. In 1965 he created the first President of the Printmakers Council and in 1982 awarded a CBE.
